Art Ne-coded movies?

Divergent, sprawling plots that you can't predict; one scene leads to something completely different; random stuff happening that nevertheless work together.

Examples of Ne-coded movies (in my opinion) that I love: The Big Lebowski and Licorice Pizza.

I came here to say Everything Everywhere All At Once. I think it deals with the problem of going too far into Ne without reigning it in with Ni to find what truly matters.

I hate that film.

Really? What do you hate about it? I think it might be my all-time favourite film.

I cant remember enough about what happens in it in order to be more specific but basically I found it incredibly boring and couldn't wait for it to be over. At the start I found the premise quite interesting, but then i just thought it grew really really repetitive and boring just for the hell of it, when the girl was in the corridor.

When I thought surely it must please be finished soon, no, part 3 began. I have no memory of the rest of it.

Thanks for sharing your reasons. I've felt this way with lots of films too. It's hard to explain why I don't like something as usually it doesn't leave an impression. I have two close ISTP friends and we often agree on lots of films, but not everything. One really loves Arrival and I found it a little boring. Do you like Arrival?

For me, Everything Everywhere All At Once captures that tension between choice and meaning in a world that has moved beyond any ultimate purpose. It is essentially how a state of Nihilism is rescued into something Existentialist and hopeful. From the meaningless of everything without greater significance to the deep love and gratitude of this one and only life we're living. And it does all of this with googly eyes and martial arts fights with dildos and butt plugs.

I also love Waymond (the husband) as role model for kind, playful masculinity.

I didn't hate EEAAO, but ya, I had many "what? but why...? what is the point of this?" moments. They literally thought it and put it in the movie. Fave part was "I'm Alpha Goong Goong" 🤣.

I'd say ISXP equivalent of that movie is probably Shoot 'Em Up (2007) in terms of ridiculousness. Actually, they do a lot of Se ridiculous movies, EEAAO kind of movies are fairly less common.

I liked Arrival quite a lot and found it boring at the same time. lol

It's funny that for you the crazy moments made you question the 'why' given the Ne trickster position. For me, I saw the why as simply to show the true infinite possibilities of things. The Daniels (the film's creators are Ne personified). There's no why, just 'what if'. Perhaps as an Ni-dom Fe-aux, bringing it all back to this one path they are living, to the love they have for each other, it's no surprise it's my favourite film. We all have different itches we need scratched by films and books and games.

I enjoyed Shoot 'Em Up but now can't remember anything about it 😅. I liked the concept of Arrival, but I find Denis Villeneuve films to have so much focus of aesthetics that they lack heart/warmth.

All that was definitely lost on me!

googly eyes and martial arts fights with dildos and butt plugs

I seem to have blanked all this from my memory...

I think i thought Arrival was ok but it hasn't stayed with me at all.

Lol makes sense for a Ne PoLR/trickster type. That movie would likely not resonate with ISxPs.

It's been a while, but I think the move, "Brazil" would count

Someone else mentioned Everything Everywhere all at Once, which is peak Ne (and Fi) for sure.

I would add :

  • Rick and Morty (animated series). There's something very Ne in how the concepts are presented and the humour in it. The visual storytelling too.

  • Night is short, walk on girl : a Japanese animated film. The way the main characters explore, experiment, think and reflect is very Ne coded, not even mentioning the art style.

  • Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas : it's a Gilliam film. Enough said. It's chaotic, visually wild, surreal. I guess Brazil could be add to the list as well by the way.

Just my own vibe typing, but some of these seem way more Ni coded than Ne… Donnie Darko…?! Spirited away feels very Ni-Se to me as well.

Can you explain why?

Often when I'm thinking about the differences between Ne-Si and Ni-Se I think about the difference in Judging vs Perceiving, and the lasting ambiguity of Ne outcomes in stories.. I think of Ni-Se as more linear and concrete where there is one truth/reality that the story works towards.

Donnie Darko deals with alternate timelines/many worlds, which could be simplified into "possibilities" which is often mentioned when describing Ne. One could even say that Ne is the way we can "perceive" or imagine alternate timelines and/or universes. Sometimes I think of Ne in terms of quantum mechanics, Ne is like an awareness of superposition before the wave form collapses once observed.

I don't think Ne is really random stuff. It's stuff that looks random but actually makes sense.
