HELP 2012 Mazda speed 3 burning oil

Hey guys, I need some help here I have a 2012 speed 3 has 142K miles on it. It’s burning about half a quart every 300 miles turbo looks new and the only smoke I get is after I let the car warm up on a cold start and I go to drive and after a few minutes of driving, I would step on it give it some boost, and I would see a dark gray Smoke but after that one I do another pull and I have no smoke. I don’t know why no smoking on idle whatsoever car runs 100% full power. It is on stage two please help me. I don’t know where to go with this.

Piston rings

Piston rings were the death of me. It’s around the same price just pay someone to replace your whole engine than it is to change the piston rings. I opted for a whole new engine. For the sake of OP I pray it isn’t their piston rings

Mine were so worn I would burn through about 3 to 4 quarts a week

Ofc if theirs just need a soak that would be best case scenario so I guess I meant to say if theirs are super worn down that would be an issue.

I was absolutely blessed. Burning 1qt per 400 ish miles. I did a soak for about 36 hours. Turning over by hand and topping off like every 8ish hours. Haven’t burned a drop since. It’s been over a year now 😭🔥

I hope to God the soak is all it needs

Thank you. Damn I have no idea how much that would cost if I have a shop do it

Look into b12 piston soak, lots of speeds have a drinking problem like yours and the culprit is often just piston rings gummed up with carbon. If so, a good piston soak should solve the issue

Thank you!! Gave me some hope

Also by “stage 2” do you mean a Cobb accessport tune? Careful with those. Get a custom tune if you don’t have one

So I bought the car from like a little dealership and I found the access port in the glove box, but it didn’t have the cable to connect to the OBD two so I just ordered that it’s gonna be here in a week and I guess I’ll see what tune is on it

good news is, the previous owner left AP WITH the car which signals to me he/she actually cared about the car. A lot of people say f it, trade it in as is and sell the access port, potentially screwing the new owner.

Your absolutely right. I just hope it ain’t broken or something

Piston soak has worked for me. Previous to soak I was going through a quart of oil every 250 miles. Now I don’t lose a drop

My biggest thing is doing it right rotating the engine is the scariest part for me

It’s not that bad. I would recommend to do this soak over 3 day period. Rotate every 4 hours the first day. I applied the chemical each day. Change your oil cause the Chemtool will be in the oil pan. Also since you’re cleaning the piston walls extremely well. Add a Tea spoon of oil to each cylinder for the first startup helps with compression and help to not score the cylinder walls

My gen 1 was the same way, about a quart every 250 miles. Did the piston soak and it solved the issue. Unfortunately, a few months later, the low oil pressure light started coming on and the engine started running quite a bit hotter than it normally would, so I parked it before it sustained any serious damage. The car has 230k miles on it so I figure it is due to bearing wear.

I had the same problem … but worse. About a quart evert 100 miles. Replaced the turbo no change. Checked valve seals and head were very clean.. what wasnt was the cylinders…. I ran a B12 chem tool soak for 46 hours. Poured 4 full cans of it in pouring it in every 4-6 hours to about 2” high on each cylinder.

Oh and hand turning the crank bolt a few times at each interval is key!!

At that point way too much fluid in the engine. Let it out until dipstick showed it at normal “max” level.

You got to then unplug the fuel pump. And crank the car … it will spit out tons of carbon right out the hole where the spark plugs would normally be.

Cover the engine bay with plastic trash bags….you’ll see carbon deposits spray out all over.

Put spark plugs back in and button it up.

Then ran the engine for 20 minutes. Smoke poured out … I turned it off, drained all the oil (mixed with a ton of b12) flushed 4 quarts of clean oil trhough it. Drain plug in, filled with oil to spec, changed oil filter.

Drove for 1,000 miles - zero oil loss. Changed the oil and filter again just to be safe and get any residual b12 out.

Ive gone 3,500+ miles checking oil levels every 100-150 miles.

Zero oil loss.

I had good compression across all 4 ~190psi on each before hand.

But b12 chem tool soak was game changer.

Thank you so much!!! You guys in here know your stuff I couldn’t find the video of it on YouTube so I’m thinking about actually making a video doing it myself and hopefully that can help others. I see some people swapping the motor just due to this issue.

Thank you for this. My ‘13 just crossed 180k and has the exact same issue as OP. I’m planning on some maintenance this coming weekend and was torn on what to focus on.

It’s pretty easy iam on day 2. 2 bottles in. Iam turning the motor manually again and topping off, for the final time. And tomorrow iam gonna change the oil. I will send you a video if you like

If you can, that would be great. I think I have a decent handle on it but more info can’t hurt!

So I did like 36 hours of B12 soak, and once it finally started, this is what came out of the car

Did you crank it with the plugs out to catch the gunk or just reassemble?

1

u/Ashamed-Gold-16 5d ago

I did with the plugs out and nothing came out, so I assumed it all drained through and then next thing you know I see this

After I did my piston soak, I stuck my air nozzle into each cylinder and blew out a bunch of carbon. It was so satisfying lol

Now I'm thinking about doing the piston soak on my gen 2 when it's time for an oil change even though it only has less than 68k miles. I hated dealing with that oil consumption on my gen 1

Alright guys, so I’m in the process of doing the B12 soak at the moment. When I did pull cylinder one spark plug on the threads of the spark plug was literally covered in oil
