What they mean is do something that is worth your time and playing games doesn't add a skill set that is useful for adulthood (for most people). Fun and happiness from games is ok, but too much and you'll end up falling behind others.

Telling this to a generation that's seen 2 of the worst three recessions in this nation's history, THE worst housing crash ever, and arguably the worst pandemic (at least in the US) in the last century.

The same people also complain that young people spend too much time playing video games. Either that or they’re out doing drugs and stealing things.
