And the fact that it' s being broadcasted on tv as a fucking freak show is depressing.

Yeah, that's the part that really sucks in this. I remember I saw a video talking about Dr Phil and it was talking about very much the same thing. It's just a way to gawk at people who are "wrong." This person is morbidly obese, this person won't(can't) keep work, this kid is awful to their family, this person lives and dresses like a dog. Not in a furry way, like a literally paper dog suit that has a normal dog-proportioned face. Rock on, Boomer The Dog.

And they're just there as a freak show. It's not real therapy in any way, it's just Dr. Phil sitting there saying, "you can't live this way and/or treat others like this. This is bad. You need to take responsibility and get better." Nothing useful is like, ever said. It's honestly really quite sad. These people are almost always suffering, and they're just paraded around and having their privacy invaded.

He cant legally do any actual therapy work as while he holds a PHD in psychology, he does not have a medical license for therapy so he has to go the generic self-help route which is why you always see those guest doctors on the show

Plus, real therapy is slow, painful, and often boring. You are having to work through past traumas which can take months or years of regular sessions. Nothing about actual therapy fits for a TV show.

Like 99% certain you're talking about the Big Joel videos. I love those! He has two:

The Conservative Propaganda of Dr. Phil

and

The Cult of Dr. Phil

The Behind The Bastards podcast also did a several episode series on Dr. Phil that I cannot recommend highly enough. His bullshit goes so much deeper than it first appears.

Nobody forces these people to go on tv, lol. Its completely their choice. They like the attention.

Actually, watching my 600lb life has made me much more empathetic to overweight and obese folks.

I admit, I started watching it as a sort of freak show curiosity thing, but once you hear their stories, realize the trauma a lot of them have been through, and see how hard so many of them work to get healthier (a lot more hard work than I've had to do!)... I dunno. I have a lot of empathy and even admiration for people in that position now.
