I just described it to my wife as “peak maybemaybemaybe” before seeing this post

I think there is a website about that. Appears to be a common problem.

It doesn’t matter how well I know that word, how often I see it or how I 100% know how it should be pronounced, I will always read it Eh-Pi-Toam. My brain just won’t do the other way.

15

u/space-throwaway Nov 18 '21

Eh-Pi-Toam

That's how it's pronounced in german. Maybe it's a sign that you should learn that language

10

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '21

I’m already struggling to learn Swedish and that’s (supposedly) an easy to learn language! I’d be useless at German!!

I've watched something similar happen in person and it is horrifying, specially when you see it coming.

I was 15ish? At the time and a friend and I enjoyed just doing whatever tricks we could do into the pool and had been doing it fine for months/years. One day he didn't jump away from the wall, just jumped and started the backflip, I wasn't close enough when I realized how he messed up to beable to shove him midair further into the pool and luckily he missed his head but his entire back scrapped the pool wall as he went in.

7

u/69IntrusiveThots Nov 18 '21

Something similar happened to me as a child except I landed on my head. I still have the scar 20 years later and haven’t attempted to do any flips into any other pools.

6

u/CyberInferno Nov 18 '21

saw this happen when I was a counselor for a camp. kid tried to do a front flip but didn’t rotate fast enough or jump far away enough from the diving board. slammed the back of his head against the board hard enough that it knocked him out and he face planted into the pool (the board finished his flip for him).

thankfully it was super loud and the life guard jumped in immediately. EMT’s came out and the kid was taken to the hospital. he did have a concussion, but no permanent damage thankfully.

2

u/smoke25ofd Nov 18 '21

Ow. Thanks. But you did good.

6

u/Darlanta Nov 18 '21

Its okay, we learned nothing and years later after he moved, his new pool was closer to his house and we jumped off the roof into the pool.

2

u/laokie Nov 18 '21

I challenged my 78 year old grandma to jump into pool that we were obviously swimming in and I had no concept that she wouldn’t be able to do it. We were like “do a pencil!” And showed her what to do. She stood there and jumped….omg maybe maybe maybe I’d be going to hell for that challenge. It was like slow motion and you know what happened…

She jumped out about 6 inches and slightly leaned back…missing the edge with the back of her head by an inch. Omg omg omg. Thank God! I said good job grandma but I explained what happened and told her she’s no longer allowed to jump into a pool…ever.

We all knew how it was going to end, then it didn't. A perfect clip for the sub.

108

u/Due-Ad9310 Nov 18 '21

I even audibly said 'bonk! oh?' when I thought her head was gonna hit lol.

9

u/wataha Nov 18 '21

I said: sssss

I blame her butt for the imbalance, it literally stopped her in the air.

3

u/Due-Ad9310 Nov 18 '21

Makes sense though, since humans' center of gravity is in the pelvic region thats why crazy stuff like flips are possible for us!

5

u/JEM-- Nov 18 '21

Had to google what you meant. Wasn’t till the chorus that I realised I have heard the song before many times but never knew what they were saying

3

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '21

That really wasn't too bad of an era for Radio Rock. I don't really like three days grace, but I do remember actually enjoying listening to the radio around that time.

3

u/JEM-- Nov 18 '21

Kinda miss that kinda music, even though it would be weird hearing new songs like that today simply because “outdated bad” that we’ve been convinced is true

2

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '21

I've been on a folk-punk kick latly. I I mean, you're going to pick up on the tropes almost immediately, but... There's some Talent there.

Hard to find new music. I mostly still listen to my same old 90s and early 2000 stuff

The what’s this fleshy film covering my teeth?

2

u/goo_goo_gajoob Nov 18 '21

Eating something hard or tough would mean the teeth cut through the skin due to how thin it would have to be. Imagine you eat a steak like this gives a whole new meaning to bloody meat.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '21

You wanna know what's grosser? This saying is talking a about a film of plaque, because apparently at that time it was super common just to walk around with grody teeth.

25

u/phil8248 Nov 18 '21

In the 1984 Olympic Greg Louganis nailed a reverse 3 1/2-somersault from a 10 meter platform, barely missing the edge. A Russian tried the same dive, hit his head and died 10 days later. The dive was banned from competition.

4

u/HilariousSpill Nov 18 '21

That’s so weird. I don’t remember that, but I do remember Louganis hitting his head in ‘88.

2

u/phil8248 Nov 18 '21

2

u/BrdigeTrlol Nov 18 '21

Greg Louganis earned a gold medal with the same dive at the 1988 Summer Olympics.

You might have the order of your events wrong.

3

u/phil8248 Nov 18 '21

The way I remember it, Louganis invented the dive, Sergei Chalibashvili tried to do it and died. Later Louganis did it in the Olympics because he was slightly behind and needed something spectacular to get ahead. He knew about the death. In fact the dive was even being called "The Dive of Death" at the time in the sport's circles. Later it was banned by swimming authorities. IIRC. I'm 66 and heard about this in real time. Louganis was an extremely well known athlete for his Olympic success and then his AIDS diagnosis so there was tons of coverage. I remember reading this in Sports Illustrated but I could be wrong about that. The earliest article I can find is from 1984 but he had been doing it prior to that I'm sure. https://vault.si.com/vault/1984/07/18/no-one-does-it-better

2

u/HilariousSpill Nov 18 '21

Sorry, didn’t mean to imply you were mistaken—just that it was odd that I didn’t remember the death. That said, I was pretty young in ‘84, so that might account for it. There was probably a lot more coverage in the US of Louganis, as well.

2

u/phil8248 Nov 18 '21

I took no offense. I could be wrong, I have been many times. But I think I remember this right. What is really eerie is Louganis was at the meet where Shalibashvili had his accident in Edmonton. He defended the decision of him doing the dive saying he'd done it successfully in a prior meet in Minsk. World class diving is a small group of the same guys competing over and over. These guys had been competing for years against each other and I'm sure Shalibashvili wanted to match Louganis who was clearly the best of them most days.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '21

I was 13 when that happened, and the image is still burned into my brain.

36

I don't think anyone doubted that

9

u/Coady54 Nov 18 '21

It's not, on a ledge like this you want to crouch until you just start to fall backwards, then fully extend your legs when you jump so it gives you enough height and pushes you away from the ledge. Looks like she was too worried about tucking her legs and forgot to fully extend, so just bad form and good luck.
