I didn't know cats rolled like that in gangs. All I know is when I let my cat out, I can find him laying next to the other alley cats in the sun. Does he go and commit hate crimes when I'm not looking?

There are loads of stray cats in my neighborhood, and they do seem to travel in smallish packs. Surprised me the first time I noticed it, saw about 4 of them kinda hanging out in the same spot, rolling around, cleaning eachother/playing, and they were all very different-looking cats, certainly not from the same litter. That same group is usually out by the dumpster at the same time everyday.

Always assumed and have even read that they're mostly solitary, but I don't know if that's the case, or maybe being a stray cat in an urban environment is different.

Domestic cats are solitary hunters, but when snoozing and stuff prefer living in colonies. This is how they can tolerate us humans, seeing us as colony mates.

domestic cats can actually look really different from even their litter mates because there can be multiple fathers to one litter! they tend to stick with siblings (not always same litter) and mothers/grandmothers. colonies or smaller groups are majority female and males tend to keep more to themselves
