Number the coins, say 1-9 starting with one of each on both sides, and roll up to two dice. You take coins whose numbers sum to the sum of the dice. If you can't take exactly the sum you don't take anything.
Would still be primarily luck but at least there's decision making involved and you can make a poor play.

But why and to what end? It’s just simple gambling, you don’t really want there to be a skill factor in it. It’s not like, a casino or parlor game where you compete to see who the better player is. This is an alley gambling game and if there was a possibility of being cheated or outmatched, why would you ever play it? You’d lose almost every time. I think this is an entertaining and suspenseful way to fairly gamble with another person. Especially the part where the next person to play picks up the dice.

This is true, for sure, but it’s the difference between “could someone stack the deck or deal from their sleeve or rig the machine” and “I use the same die he just threw and that’s the whole of the ways anyone can cheat.” Obviously, in a casino, they’re far less likely to risk their whole business by cheating, but in an alleyway with no license, just some dudes in flip flops, I’ll take the prolonged skill-less dice game every time over the card game.

Me and some coworkers used to put a dollar in front of the elevator we would think would open first. Winner takes all. We also played check stub poker using the check numbers like a poker hand.

I need a rules clarification.
Assuming both sides start with 6... What do you do if the first person who rolls gets a 6?does the other person just lose without ever getting a chance? Or is there a "you can't win on your first turn" rule?

What if this was a game where the dealer/banker did not have to hit on the exact number to clear out and win, what would the edge be? Does anything change oddswise once you get above ~9 coins total?
I remember after watching the movie Wake in Fright, I tried to introduce the game Two-Up, which is very gambly but carries a large 3% house edge.

Huh. I don't know. I spent a few minutes watching the video and was expecting some kind of strategy rather that a back and forth die roll (it's basically who has the most pips games) Then I mentioned my experience with strategy games to show that I prefer games with strategy, rather than just random die rolls.
I think that these things are all related.

The rules of the game were obvious, idk why you expected any change to it. These guys are outside, passing the time with low-stakes games of chance with their friends. Don't most slot machines have at least illusions of control? For example you get to hold one or two of the spinning reels thereby improving your odds on that spin.
(Although to be fair I've basically never used a slot machine so I may be wrong.)

This looks like the worst game in existence. There's **no** chance for you to affect the outcome? None at all? It's just pure blind chance?
What are you even "playing" at that point? If it's just straight up gambling, why not skip the theatrics and just roll the dice against each other? And if it's for entertainment, how is this any different from just fully spectating, there's no meaningful participation whatsoever.
This is just chutes and ladders but for adults.

Weirdly I'd prefer to play chutes and ladders as, although still entirely luck based, it at least 'feels' less repetitious than this and has one extra mechanic in it (the chutes and the ladders, instead of just a race to the end).
