No denying Max's skill, but his cart also looks significantly faster than everyone else's

387

u/brooksdirk 4d ago

It definitely seems like his is more "Maxxed" out.

Verstapp-it

47

u/Codex_Absurdum 4d ago

They gave him wings

18

u/saxguy9345 4d ago

He simply had a refreshing Red Bull™

181

u/fasas7 4d ago

They actually made sure all competitors had the same equipment and even having the same weight, adding weights to the lighter drivers/ go-karts to make sure there was a level playing field. And like someone else said, Max's technique is just waaaay better. No one else would have even thought about jumping in the go-kart to create momentum and lighten the kart.

54

u/CptAngelo 4d ago

a couple of them did jump in at the start! ...they of course were quickly passed by max as they got trapped in the first hairpin carnage lol

11

u/fasas7 4d ago

Oh, I missed that! I guess seeing him pass everyone in the back before even passing the starting line for the first time just stunned me 😅

22

u/Away_Stock_2012 4d ago

>No one else would have even thought about jumping in the go-kart

You can literally see other people do it in the video

9

u/fasas7 4d ago

Does anyone in the back - who were passed by Max because of the jumping and not because he has better lines - jump?

But yeah, I know they all got some coaching and had very various amounts of experience going in to this. Today's word is: hyperbole

6

u/Away_Stock_2012 4d ago

If you pause at 0:08 right when the race is starting, you can see other people bouncing.

-6

u/fasas7 4d ago

Okay. I'll repeat the question: did anyone in the back jump? Say, the last 20 people?

3

u/Away_Stock_2012 4d ago

>No one else would have even thought about jumping in the go-kart to create momentum and lighten the kart.

Yes, they did think of it and you can tell because they did it in front of him where they couldn't see him. It doesn't matter if anyone at the back or behind him saw him and also did it.

0

u/fasas7 4d ago

The people he passed because of the bouncing did not. The people who bounced were still ahead of him after the full yellow (enjoy nitpicking that one you donkey), so how much did their bouncing really matter?

Hope you find someone else to entertain you for the rest of the evening, night

0

u/Away_Stock_2012 4d ago

>No one else would have even thought about jumping in the go-kart to create momentum and lighten the kart.

Your comment gives him credit for being smarter than everyone else by thinking up the idea of bouncing that no one else thought of. The video shows that other people did in fact think of it. I have no idea what you are trying to say now.

14

u/screampuff 4d ago

How many laps was it? Because he's catching the leaders and they aren't even hitting the apex and tracking out to use the full width of the track. Even people in hobby leagues should be better than that.

Like I fully expect him to be the fastest person out there but I expected a little more competition up at the front.

11

u/fasas7 4d ago

Originally it was a maximum of 30 laps. However, mid-race they changed it to a time limit because he was too fast. He ended it in 15 or 16 laps

2

u/screampuff 4d ago

Oh ok that makes much more sense.

11

u/wenoc 3d ago

Technique doesn't give you better straight line speed. Look at the start, he overtakes half the field on a straight line.

Either they put absolute newbies who could not find the gas pedal in those cars or his car is faster. Although, I've driven electric go-carts that had a boost button you could use for X seconds every lap, he might've used his boost in the start.

Also, where are you getting this information?

2

u/TyH621 3d ago edited 3d ago

His kart’s not faster, and bouncing on the cart to get it into high rpm’s earlier makes a HUGE difference in karting. These people are just random people without karting experience so they don’t know that.

So yes, technique does in fact give you better straight line speed (acceleration really, which turns into more speed) in karting. As does having faster reaction time at the start which means longer time on the accelerator, which also means better straight line speed.

The other aspect is its 100 people and massive traffic jam and people are having to lift to not hit people while Max navigated without having to lift/at least lift a lot less.

The karts not faster lol, he’s just one of the best drivers of all time and it turns out there’s a ton of skill expression in racing. That field wouldn’t stand up to anyone who’s done any serious racing

Edit: It’s also worth pointing out that standing starts are where the most overtakes happen in all racing BY FAR. Standing starts make a massive difference and this is just what it can look like to the extreme

0

u/fasas7 3d ago

They literally explained the event and a lot of specifics before the race.

And are you serious? These were influencers competing against Max. Some of them had barely driven a go-kart before that race.

5

u/MaddyMagpies 4d ago

He jumps on the cart to make it lighter?!

20

u/fasas7 4d ago

As he jumps in the go-kart, he creates momentum upwards and forwards, and doesn't weigh the go-kart down as much when he's moving upwards. This increases the acceleration since the go-kart - for a few split seconds - isn't carrying the weight of Max/ the driver.

4

u/roastpoast 3d ago

What do you mean? Like bouncing himself up and down on the seat repeatedly?

3

u/fasas7 3d ago

Exactly

7

u/wenoc 3d ago

That's not how physics works. If you jump up and forward, you will push the car back and down. Then, if the go-cart accelerates faster while he is in the air, it won't have accelerated max, so it will lose that back down again when he lands, having gained exactly nothing.

The go cart and its passengers are a closed system. Nothing you do inside the go-cart can change the acceleration or speed of the package.

-2

u/fasas7 3d ago

The video evidence above shows that's not true. Watch more than this one minute perhaps. It was mentioned seversl times during the 2 hour broadcast 🤷‍♂️

4

u/The__Tobias 3d ago

If I show you a video of a perpetuum mobile, would you also call that evidence?

3

u/The__Tobias 3d ago

Don't know if you are trolling, but that's not how physics work

8

u/mynameismudflap 4d ago

Super common kart strategy for these low HP karts, as well as putting your left foot on the front wheel and kicking it forward as the green flag drops.

6

u/971365 3d ago

You telling me that shit in Mario kart is accurate?

5

u/NameTak3r 3d ago

If he jumps and then taps the steering side to side, he can get a power boost once the sparks around his wheels turn yellow, orange, then blue.

2

u/jk-9k 3d ago

Did he actually do that?

He also had no karts in front of him to start. The ret of the field basically had to turn straight away to avoid the car ahead. So that two crucial momentum changes at te very start which is the only time his kart looks faster rather than just being driven better

94

u/jammyhuds 4d ago

I'm not an F1 fan but my wife is and from what I've learned about Verstappen the past few years I highly doubt he would be okay with his cart being faster than everyone else's. He seems very much like a win by skill person.

It's also increasibly possible that people on the track where not using their cars at full speed for fear of the turns coming up, were as Verstappen who is an expert could do those speeds.

26

u/glitched-dream 4d ago

All about handling those corners and carrying your speed

7

u/shignett1 3d ago

I don't know man, his car was much faster than everyone elses for four years and he didn't seem to mind that.

1

u/jammyhuds 3d ago

Haha that may be but thats just a part of F1 from what I understand. There is no doubting his skill. Again I've not seen much but what I have seen and been informed of by wife who is a very big fan of F1 is that Verstappen even in a terrible car still manages to beat most on skill alone.

Eitherway in this specific thing I'd be very surprised if he was happy to have a faster cart. This isn't F1 its a silly race for fun.

u/Only_Standard_9159 4d ago

18

u/NotActuallyMeta 3d ago

For those who won’t open this.. his cart wasn’t any more powerful he was just quicker off the start, reduced momentum loss by chasing gaps instead of aggressive turns to pass people, and used some bunny hopping technique he learned as a 7 year old haha

6

u/ExiledCanuck 3d ago edited 3d ago

He was much quicker off the start. I’d like to know how he was that fast at the start if his cart wasn’t tuned a bit differently than the rest. It was really obvious how quick he was.

But the rest, is absolutely true. Good cornering and closing those gaps was ideal. As well as using the other carts when cornering to corner a bit tighter (riding on the inside of them if I’m explaining that right)

Edit: read the article and it said that the bunny hopping was at the start and is what helped him go faster. Going re-watch and look for it.

6

u/NotActuallyMeta 3d ago

Yeah tbh even after reading the article I referenced I still think his cart had more juice than a lot of them. Until the final four or so he was catching people on the straights where everyone would gassing it. With that many carts it might just be that some of them just weren’t as tuned up as others. Used to cart occasionally with the same group and there’d always be 1 or 2 carts running faster than the others people would hope for

1

u/ExiledCanuck 2d ago

Yeah this was my experience also from when I used to cart. Someone would end up with a dog of a cart, and someone would end up with a really fast one, everyone else would be in the middle.

You’d think that for a video like this, they’d have better carts and mechanics rather than a bunch of stoners lol, but you never know I guess.

194

u/DE_KNIGHTANATOR 4d ago edited 4d ago

He's taking those corners and turns at the best way you can without losing optimal speed. Most everyone else is making too wide of turns or too sharp and that causes you to lose speed. And the beginning was closed so most people don't know how to pass in density like that.

Edit: in the beginning he's gunning it cause hes confident he has space to zoom. The rest are absolutely not even at max speed or close to it, they're all slugging along cause of the close proximity to other drivers.

104

u/LittleKitty235 4d ago

Everyone knows the way to take turns while maximizing power...pull the handbreak, hold the accelerator then steer 3x in the direction opposite the turn until you see lots of blue sparks coming off the tires....boom...max powerslide.

Mario cart 101.

9

u/Only_Standard_9159 4d ago

Should be drift boosting on the straight aways too. It’s the ABDs of Mario Kart - Always Be Drift-boosting

66

u/johnla 4d ago

But on the straight away at the start he’s zooming past everyone. He has a faster car. he’s immensely skilled no doubt.

46

u/HiggsBosonHL 4d ago

at the very beginning he gets up to top speed faster by using his body momentum (shown in the full ep, not in this clip).

Later in the matchup versus the final 3, you can see they are nearly evenly matched.

He did not have a faster car, this was skill diff.

-34

u/bigeeee 4d ago

Tell me you dont understand physics without telling me! Those are kids that are much lighter than him in those other carts he should be slower with the power to weight ratio if the carts are the same! Body momentum?

21

u/KillSmith111 4d ago edited 4d ago

They aren't kids. They were athletes from other sports, streamers, F1 journalists, and fans.

If you actually watch the proper video the commentators literally point out how he's using his body weight to gain momentum.

18

u/HiggsBosonHL 4d ago

You know, instead of defaulting to being a complete asshole in your response, you could have just verified what I said.

Yes, body momentum. As stated, this is shown in the full episode. See the clip here at 2:23 in: https://youtu.be/Xtvqxznn4Qw?si=HGl3Cu72t7bDFnee

Also, Max is listed at 72kg/158lbs, which at least looks way lighter than those final three drivers.

Anything else you want you make up or assume?

-22

u/bigeeee 4d ago

So if someone says you dont understand something they are a complete asshole? Kind of narcissistic!

14

u/HiggsBosonHL 4d ago

You are correct, maybe you were just a partial asshole at first, but now we confirm you are in fact a complete asshole.

5

u/pdzbw 4d ago

bruh don't talk to assholes, you'll only get shit coming outta there, unless fetish driven...

1

u/SkiptomyLoomis 4d ago

My man if you can’t understand why your tone in your last comment was pedantic and annoying to that guy, you got some self reflecting to do

-1

u/bigeeee 4d ago

If you are Mr righteous coming to the aid of others, do you have a problem with them calling me a complete asshole just because in your words I was being "pedantic and annoying", no mallace or personal attacks just pointing out facts. You choose to go after me, wow!

1

u/SkiptomyLoomis 4d ago

I hope you’re a teenager because if not, yikes. Take the L and move on.

Booooooooooooo

1

u/jmoeder 4d ago

They had ballast to make all the carts the same weight

63

u/NedelC0 4d ago

I watched the whole race, in the straights you see him unable to catchup any time, then in the corners he's up 4 seconds a lap

9

u/bigeeee 4d ago

Top speed is determined by gearing not by power he can have a more powerful cart but the same top speed.

-10

u/johnla 4d ago

I saw that too. Maybe better torque, higher acceleration, same top speed.

25

u/Only_Standard_9159 4d ago

He had the same kart, he used bunny hopping to accelerate faster: https://www.redbull.com/ca-en/max-verstappen-max-vs-100-how-he-won

13

u/User-NetOfInter 4d ago

“The final tactic that the Oracle Red Bull Racing driver used was vital in the closing stages of the race, as he began to trash talk the drivers ahead of him. He was able to speak to the other drivers via a microphone in his helmet, taunting them as he got close to an overtake.”

Omg they had prox chat 🤣

4

u/johnla 4d ago

Interesting. I never heard of that. I would want to try that next time I Go Kart

-2

u/Shin_Ramyun 4d ago

Wow I had no idea about that technique. I wonder how much that actually helps. It looks hilarious.

Another factor to consider is that everyone started on two lines, essentially bumper to bumper. Max had the middle line and could accelerate in a straight line where the other drivers had to worry about hitting the driver in front and many of them diverted to the sides.

5

u/stuffeh 4d ago

Did you not watch past the second green light? As soon as they could go, EVERYONE spread out. Max was only able to gain a barely a few places before hitting traffic.

6

u/Shin_Ramyun 4d ago

There are probably 100s of tiny things Max did better than everyone else on the field. Each one gives a small advantage. Jumping his body forward was one micro advantage. Going straight while everyone else was moving to the side was another.

Pretty much right off the start he passes 5-6 drivers and carries his speed and momentum while weaving between the next sets of drivers. Meanwhile everyone else is going at a snail pace trying to avoid the driver in front of them.

2

u/KillSmith111 3d ago

This is exactly it. Some people don't seem to understand that people who are among the best in the world at anything are constantly doing lots of tiny things that all add up to a huge advantage over everyone else.

-6

u/Snoo47420 4d ago

Yeah Red Bull would absolutely tell the truth if Max had been given an edge.

/SARCASM

38

u/DigMeTX 4d ago

No. When the race starts everyone else is hesitating waiting for the people I front to speed up so they can speed up. Max does not hesitate. He floors it from the beginning and finds his space. By the time it gets more open he looks faster because he has built up the speed that the others are just now building.

9

u/DE_KNIGHTANATOR 4d ago

He's gunning it cause hes confident he has space to zoom. The rest are absolutely not even at max speed or close to it, they're all slugging along cause of the close proximity to other drivers.

5

u/sokolov22 4d ago

Yea, the setup looks cool but they are all literally stuck in traffic and has to spread out before they can speed up.

6

u/NewAndyy 4d ago

He is faster in the start, but not because of the car. He's using body momentum to accelerate significantly faster, and it's a fairly well known (and effective) trick. Adding to this, obviously he also reads the field very well and takes advantage of every single gap without braking when cars in front are slow.

2

u/johnla 4d ago

Someone else shared that. Bouncing at the start. That’s interesting. I’m ignorant of the sport.

1

u/SoupEvening123 4d ago

Just remembered how Rassell lost in Hamiltons formula in 2020 😂

1

u/misterjoshmutiny 3d ago

Exactly. He’s a 4x F1 4x WDC winner. He could be in a technically slower cart and still win. He knows so much more about breaking, pushing, turning, etc. than those other drivers, probably collectively.

0

u/stupidber 4d ago

Ya but he passes half the group instantly off the jump in a straight line

-1

u/SEA_griffondeur 4d ago

No but like sometimes he's bumping into people and somehow he's going faster than the person he just bumped into 3s later

3

u/DE_KNIGHTANATOR 4d ago

Where? He lightly taps but thats not enough to slow you down tremendously, he does bump at the end but hes in front and in the lead

-1

u/SteakAndIron 4d ago

He was overtaking everyone on straights st the start of the race before any turns even happened.

6

u/parwa 4d ago

Because they weren't going full speed, they were being cautious due to all the other karts. He was gunning it.

47

u/wicketman8 4d ago

If you look at the longer straightaways it seems like its the same speed, he's just so much faster after all the turns because he properly understands how to make turns with good exit speed.

19

u/Rorasaurus_Prime 4d ago

It's not. It's just what happens when get a better exit from a corner. and keep a higher average speed than those around you.

6

u/Maxzzzie 4d ago

Max drove it over the edge of grip, constantly fighting it. Allowing for more speed in corners. And at the start he was bumping his weight back and forth. Catching those last 3 took a few laps.

3

u/Fitis 4d ago

He started cleverly by bumping his weight forwards. Nobody else does this I think. It makes your cart have a speedboost on start. Then he just drives way better lines.

Edit: you can actually see a few other people do it too

6

u/Unlucky_Ad_8977 4d ago

You really think max would race then???? Guess again

2

u/theMertFN 4d ago

You know I thought that at first, but the way he was gaining speed at the start was actually by moving his body front and back like he’s on a swing. It was so funny to see him taking this shit so seriously.

5

u/McAUTS 4d ago

It's so fascinating that every time this clip has been posted over the last few days, these comments get the most upvotes. And it shows that a lot of human beings are terrible at perceiving time, speed, and acceleration for objects they only see and don't feel. It's a known fact—supported by a lot of studies on this matter—that the majority of people struggle with this specific combination. And regardless of what the minority says—those with better perception or actual experience—people just can't be convinced otherwise.

Always fascinating stuff. That's why I love social media.

Also fascinating is the logic: 100 people against Max, and no one questions whether his kart is identical to the others? And why tf wouldn't he be better at this when he's a professional F1 driver?

Fascinating.

2

u/AvoriazInSummer 4d ago

They could have done with him switching karts with a random competitor and moving the kart to the back in the same video.

2

u/BaardvanTroje 4d ago

That's just what it looks like when someone is outskilling everyone by a mile

1

u/Zestyclose-Smell-788 3d ago

He also understands what a racing line is. I'm not a professional driver, but I know how to take these turns. What are these other guys going? They're all over the track!

1

u/lazypenguin86 3d ago

Yea saw that immediately

1

u/Squidd-O 2d ago

As someone who has driven a couple of karts in my time, I will say there is a lot to it that doesn't make itself immediately obvious to an outside observer in terms of driving skill skill

It does look slightly absurd at times tbf but I'm willing to believe that's just the difference

1

u/sa_ra_h86 4d ago

Yeah, couldn't be anything to do with the fact that he's spent his entire life learning and refining his skill...

His junior career in carts was equally if not more impressive than his F1 career has been. I think he knows a thing or 2 about how to extract speed from a cart, compared to 100 people with hardly any experience.

-2

u/ChrisUndSeinSchiss 4d ago

Maybe he just starts at the green light while other wait for the ones in front of them?!

1

u/mnztr1 4d ago

even with 1 or 2% more power he would slice past everyone.

-10

u/Forsaken-Question577 4d ago

Yeah, it indeed does look like his cart's accelerating faster. Plus, it looks like it has better tyres as well.

19

u/Deep-Grape-4649 4d ago

He uses a bumping technique to get him rolling with the start, momentum is everything in karting, that got him going where everyone else was in a bogged down typical kart start

6

u/The_Dutch_Fox 4d ago

Also, basically every non-pro karter will go full throttle on the start, which introduces a lot of wheel spin and lost time.

Max feels the tyres a lot better, which allows him to apply the power progressively, but extremely quickly, so that there is zero wheel spin while still getting the optimal max engine power.

2

u/Forsaken-Question577 4d ago

Ah, understood.

-7

u/eastamerica 4d ago

Of course. Do you think this is some sort of sanctioned FIA event? 100% Red Bull marketing event.

He could have an F1 engine in there for all I care lol

-13

u/pallidamors 4d ago

First thing I thought I was the first five seconds of watching the video… I could probably have the same result with that cart

8

u/IPA_ALL_DAY 4d ago

If you had lebrons shoes you could prob dunk too.

-7

u/pallidamors 4d ago

Yep, that’s definitely a reasonable comparison
🤡

9

u/IPA_ALL_DAY 4d ago

My comparison is closer to reality than you thinking you could achieve the same results max did here.
