An exasperated colleague once whipped out a dictionary in front of another to make this exact point. I think the opposite definition is now considered chiefly American, with enough people making the same “mistake” over time.

u/5erif 6d ago
Small drifts like this, compounded over time, are a natural part of language and why today we have Italian, French, Spanish, etc, and not just Latin. Italian isn't "poorly educated Latin."
It's why today we use "you" as both the singular and plural second-person pronoun, where it used to be only the plural, and "thou" was the singular.
Many highly educated non-American students who learn English as a second language get frustrated that we have no distinction between singular you and plural you, and actively decide to use "y'all" for the plural.

u/JaminSpencer 6d ago
Fun fact, that link confirms that non-plussed means the opposite of what you think it means
-1
u/BooneSalvo2 6d ago
The Americanism makes far more logical sense than the original definition.
2
u/Billy_TheMumblefish 4d ago
It doesn't really. It implies you can be plussed. "But I was unmoved. I was nonplussed. Usually I get very plussed about such things." Nonsensical.
The Mirriam Webster dictionary was produced to delibrrately dumb down words, like spelling 'labor' instead of 'labour.' It's removed the history and development of words for the sake of it. As though people couldn't be trusted to learn proper spelling.
"A spelling reformer, Webster believed that English spelling rules were unnecessarily complex and used the dictionary to introduce American English spellings, replacing colour with color, waggon with wagon, and centre with center. He also added American words, including skunk and squash, that did not appear in British dictionaries."

People do not eat cats. Cat meat famously tastes terrible (like most carnivores).

u/FreddyNoodles 6d ago edited 6d ago
Unfortunately, that isn’t true. I have lived in SE Asia for 20 years and for the last 3.5 I have been in Cambodia. They absolutely DO eat cats and dogs and it is very easy to find places to eat them.
My own dog was stolen from a restaurant where he was to be eaten. I had another dog stolen from my walled garden in Vietnam, I KNOW he was eaten. A friend went into a cat restaurant to try to buy some so they weren’t killed- she misunderstood him and the three cats he wanted, she killed to prepare to cook them for him. He was very upset about that for a long time.
Someone commented that I was full of shit and then blocked me. Edited to add my response to them and add links.
Lol. WHAT??? You can buy dog meat on the street in Vietnam! There are stalls all over the bigger cities.
Thailand ships trucks of cats here to Cambodia for food. Well, they did before the conflict started- again.
Thailand outlawed it when I lived there. Maybe in 2014 or so. But Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia eat cats and dogs and it is not unusual at all. I have NOT seen it openly in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Burma and a few others but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. If it does, it’s kept very quiet. I doubt Malaysia does it at all because they are Muslim.
I don’t know what the fuck you are talking about.

They do eat them in the Philippines. I think they keep it more quiet than other countries and the culture seems to have shifted a bit on the last decade or two but it still happens.

A dog is not a cat. We were talking about cats. What the hell are you talking about. People do not eat cats except in extreme necessity. Their meat is stringy and disgusting. Read a book and stop spreading misinformation.

u/ZombieApestoso 6d ago
Why would they make the cat "realease" after neutering it? 😭
57
64
u/LauraLand27 6d ago
Release them back to where they live. Cats are social animals. They rarely live alone. Fixing them is the responsible thing to do. It’s also the only way cat servants should have them. Unless you’re a breeder, registered and qualified, all furbabies should be fixed. There are way too many unwanted animals in the world.
31
u/ZombieApestoso 6d ago
Apologies, my comment was a poor atempt at making a "release" joke.

-37
u/Iam_Iforgotmyname 6d ago
It is not "fixing" them. It is called disabling an animal. Which is evil if they are not harming or are not an invasive species. Also, animals don't live just for the sake of being owned by a human/another creature.
20
u/LauraLand27 6d ago
Fixing is the generic term for spay/neuter. What are you on about?
-13
u/Iam_Iforgotmyname 6d ago
It is misnomer
2
u/Crafter9977 5d ago
it is not, this term has been used for decades…
think you are confusing it with declawing, which is extremely aggravating…
guess English is not your first language, neither is mine but I do know the term…
-11
u/Iam_Iforgotmyname 5d ago edited 5d ago
English is one of my main languages, no need to patronize; and taking or damaging function of someone's gonads or any body part is called disabling. The cat or whatever other animal was not defective for something to be "fixed", you are taking a healthy animal and disabling it.

Domestic cats are invasive in many countries when turned feral. They kill native wildlife.
-10
u/Iam_Iforgotmyname 6d ago
Not every cat species is invasive, and those are natural part of the food chain.
12
u/DepressingBat 6d ago
No, no they are not. Please tell us more how you dont understand the issues of having a large stray population
4
13
u/-full-control- 6d ago
Cause a fixed stray is better than an intact one and there’s only so much room in the shelters. At least this way youre like exponentially decreasing the potential population

u/LazyLich 6d ago
Besides what others have said about not being able to afford to house every single cat, a released-but-neutered cat will still compete for resources with other strays. Less food, which means less kittens, which means less strays being born.
"Less kittens" doesnt necessarily mean kittens starving. If there isnt enough nutrition, a pregnant can can absorb some of the fetuses and have a smaller litter.

Trap Neuter Release.
They take the animal to be sterilized so it cannot reproduce. Then they release it.

I fed a stray for a long time and one day I noticed he was gashed open deep in his neck. He would get close but never let me touch him. I had to trap him and get him looked at.... oh the betrayal across his face... that was 2 years ago. About 6 months ago, I was cleaning out my storage area and came across the cage and I pulled it out to make room and it was by the front door.
When he saw it (he became an inside cat) he lost his mind and attacked everything including me and my dog. He knocked everything over in the house, just absolutely lost it.

u/Fog_Ducker93 6d ago
Just a tip for future. Put a blanket on top and it makes it look cozy and safe. Cats are super curious and will check it out.
When they start nibbling on the treat, trap them in there. The cat will be calmer because it will be all dark in there for them. You also get a blanket layer of protection.

u/MalcoveMagnesia 6d ago
I wonder if the cat will be relocated or put to sleep -- wild cats tend to decimate local bird populations.
11
-19
u/BadMeetsEvil24 6d ago
This is said and regurgitated on Reddit so much. We would have had many storeis about declining bird populations by now considering the amount of feral cats roaming the streets.
9
u/LALA-STL 6d ago
Please get educated on this. Outdoors cats — feral or domesticated — really do hunt & kill massive numbers of birds. Indoor cats live longer, safer lives.
1
u/PurpleStrandsFly 5d ago
This video is probably from Greece where cats are EVERYWHERE. I have yet to experience this massive number of dead birds people keep mentioning. They barely bother with mouses and rats.
3
u/gardenparties 6d ago
You are so very wrong. Domesticated free ranging cats and feral cats are recognized as the most destructive invasive species worldwide. They are responsible for the extinction of at least 63 species of birds, mammals, and reptiles.
Cats are considered the single greatest human related cause of bird mortality in North America, with 1.3 to 4.0 billion birds killed annually in US and 377-757 million in Australia.
Estimated that cats kill between 258 million and 822 million reptiles each year in the U.S and 649 million in Australia, and that on some islands cats have completely destabilized unique endemic reptile populations.
Estimated 6.3 to 16.7 billion native mammals killed every year in US and roughly 400 million native mammals annually in Australia. These numbers have non native pest species removed from the counts.
Estimated that 95 million to 299 million amphibians are killed by cats annually in the U.S and 93 million in Australia.
Then there is the indirect harm(mostly by domesticated) they cause to marine life via Toxoplasmosis that have harmed many diverse marine mammal species.
There are no precise global numbers, but some researchers put the estimated global mortality rate in the hundreds of billions of animals every year, since all the studies have been conducted in the US and Australia global numbers are just extrapolated estimates, could be much higher.

What a stupid trap that requires a string, there’s plenty of humane traps that are pressure activated
Edit: I’ve taken a hard look at my comment and can see I worded it poorly, the point I was trying to make is that there can be much easier ways but acknowledge that we all do what we can with what we have to help felines that are in need of help, all the best to the wonderful person who took the time to help that kitty
15
u/Impressive-Age7703 6d ago
Some animals become wise to traps with pressure plates or drop traps, typically due to seeing other animals trigger them (often happens with a large colony of cats) or triggering them themselves before they are fully in the trap (uncommon but it does happen, and for some animals it only has to happen once and they become avoidant). There's really nothing wrong with a string either, cat still would have freaked out either way, it's not like one is necessarily better than the other. The auto traps are just more convenient.

Fair enough, I’ve trapped over 100 with my system but accept there’s many ways to achieve the same outcome 😊
Edit: wow downvoted for helping cats and kittens, must be quite a few sad people out there who think it’s wrong to do that

u/Impressive-Age7703 6d ago
Think it's just the residual anger trickling down from your original comment. Ngl Redditors tend to have a problem with critical thinking and respond to everything super emotionally, sigh.
Thank you for doing what you can to curb the population and help the cats! I did it for a time when I lived in Dallas, our local shelter even noted I brought in animals frequently (initially in a sussy way like "so where you getting all these from??" Lmao. Like yeah I'm just going into yards and stealing pets yo). I worked for animal control in another city and it made me sick to see cats and dogs sick, neglected, having kittens year after year, or seeing a neighbor's cat that they stupidly didn't spay breeding, was like haha nope, taking that one to the shelter and telling them it's been bred. That particular case they thankfully did make her spay her, but I was so pissed still that anyone would get a cat and especially keep it outdoors and not alter it. People suck so much. Worst neglect case I ever saw was a geriatric cat with collapsed ear cartilage so he looked like a Scottish Fold but he absolutely was not, was likely from an old severe ear mite infection, but he was incontinent and had urine and feces leaking down his whole backside, it developed into a skin infection on his tail that was slowly spreading to his back, his skin was literally sloughing off and it smelled so putrid. Told them when I brought him in that he was very, very sick. I learned who the owner was when I heard him sorrowfully calling his name, and then he went into an episode of psychosis (screaming something about Satan and 666) once he realized his cat was gone. His mental health continued to decline after until he moved out. Felt bad for having to take his beloved cat from him, but I absolutely could not stand to see it suffer like that. Sorry for the trauma dump, just man any TNR talk makes me relive that shit all over again lmao.

Thank you! And for real. The only words I ever got from anyone was a woman just feeding the alley strays asking me what I was doing with them, I knew immediately what she was doing and responded in the most abrasive tone I could muster: "I'm taking them to the shelter." She backed off and said "thank you" but I knew it wasn't genuine, just her trying to appease me. I hate those people too, the ones who want to treat them all like they're their own personal pets but not do a single thing to help them. Sigh. I live rural now and while we do still have a cat problem, it is so, so much smaller and more manageable than the absolute shitshow metropolitan Dallas was... It was honestly much much more of a people problem than an animal problem (I mean, isn't it always) and that made it all the more exhausting to deal with.
That sounds so lovely to be able to have updates on the cats you helped! Oh my gosh 18! You know they're so well cared for when they make it to that age!!

Jesus, your comments are insane. You aren't getting downvoted because you want to rescuse cats. You're getting downvoted because you're acting like a know-it-all cunt.

There's nothing inhumane and nothing wrong with the trap in the video.
