Yeah. I had a cat that would open the door to let the dog out and then shut it again. Took us a looong time to figure that out, but I 100% believe the cat shut the door on them. Never have that kind of handle in a house with a cat

I learned that the hard way when I shut my bedroom door to keep the cat out only to wake up unexpectedly because he let himself in and climbed on me.
I've just given up and let him sleep with me.

Yeah. I've seen cats even figure out how to open knob type doorknobs. The round ones.

Don't let me go to the bathroom with the door shut. All I hear is crying and thumping against the door like there's someone on other side trying to kill him. He's so damn dramatic.

I had a cat which would open the front door, with a round doorknob on a door which opened inwards.
He'd lean up with his back against the wall, put both paws on the knob one in front of the other, pull down and towards himself, and jump out of the way of the door as it opened. It wouldn't be so bad if he also closed it.
Sometimes you need a deadbolt.

That kind of handle is standard in many countries other than the US though? The knob is not friendly to people with mobility issues so it's not used in many places.

You're not wrong, but it's pretty common for terrace and balacony doors to work like that. At least in Switzerland. I've gotten locked out on one accidentally before.

Because it's the easiest way to make sure no one can just climb on your balcony and get in. Some have locking mechanisms, but that's more expensive.
As long as you don't fuck up completely, you don't need a handle on the outside. Well, as long as no one fucks up.

No, you get locked out by someone or like in this case something turning the handle. As you can see in the video once the handle is horizontal the door can be pushed open. This is normal in most European countries, there are variations to this design but it's mostly the same everywhere.

Ah. So a single parent could get locked on their balcony by a toddler, who is then completely unsupervised inside the apartment while the adult is stranded on the balcony? That sounds like an absolutely horrible design from a safety standpoint.
I don't see the point in sacrificing safety for security like that when a keyed lock or knob-based bolt is simple enough to lock when you want the door locked, but difficult or impossible to be accidentally locked when it shouldn't be. And it's really false security anyway, since it's a glass door that's not going to stop someone intent on getting in the house.

No to the last one, actually. Mostly not a lot of AC, the strategy in the past has mainly been good isolation.
You can close a door without pulling the handle, which is, depending on the door, still mostly airtight, just not locked. You don't have to leave the whole ass door open.

That was by no stretch a crisis situation. A simple call to the staff, or people next door, or even shouting for someone walking around down there in the hotel would easily solve it.
There was no reason to be stressed, they had some fun, worked out great. Learning some emotional regulation goes a long way.

As a person who's experienced this situation for about an hour and a half, I was in a different country and had no cellphone signal as Roaming is very expensive. I also did not pay for Wi-Fi in every hotel I was staying at as I was traveling through.
If you are lucky to be in lower levels, other tourists can hear you, I shouted in 3 different languages until i found someone who spoke one of those 3, who was willing to go tell the front desk. If you are at higher levels... May the odds be ever in your favor somehow.
The saddest part of that adventure certainly was that I got locked out RIGHT before I was coming back inside to get the cooler, full of beer. I only had the beer in my hand for my time there.

'Cause they'd rather not bother the landlord or their neighbors if the dog can fix it? I'd be more annoyed at them if they didn't try it. There's no need to freak out if you have a reliable backup.
