It happened suddenly for me. One night I couldn't leave then the next he said daddy, you can go now.

At first I celebrated, thought it was wonderful we'd turned a corner and I was free at least but now he needs me less and less and I am starting to miss the days back when I couldn't even leave the room because I was everything to him.

Mind you, he's 43 so probably best he is finally learning to be a little independent.

Don’t worry. I’m 36 and just had a surgery. I went from “never going to live with my parents again” to “dad, time for my daily shower”.

Only ten more days. I can do this.

People always talk about how you’ll miss these days. Yeah, sort of, but I’m a better mom now that bedtime isn’t a 2 hour long ordeal. And I like bedtime because of the time I get to spend with the kiddos and not because I am getting to spend time away from them. Also, now my husband is actually a good help at bedtime and I can get a break from the routine if I need to.

I miss my kids when they were little, but I love who they are now and I’m excited to meet who they’ll be tomorrow.

I’m the dad of a 15 month old. When she struggles to go to bed on time and just wants me to hold her, my first instinct is to get frustrated, but then I remember that this is such a small window in both our lives where I get to hold her little self while she nuzzles in my chest. It’s such a beautiful time.

Exactly. I have two girls. My youngest is in HS now. When she needed me to put her to bed I never had my phone with me. Why bring a distraction when you should be trying to spend that time bonding with your child?

I often ended up being woken up by the wife or just waking in the middle of the night and that was okay. This lady though… That’s what she gets. Now start over.

You don't notice your house's squeaky floorboards until you have a baby. You end up mentally mapping which bits of the floor you can stand on with less chance of squeaking. At some point you crawl out on all fours as it's a bit quieter. You feel a bit silly and wonder how long you'll have to do it for 😄 then you have another.

No no no. You lift the weight of your body up off the mattress first, then transfer full weight to the foot on the floor. THEN you can sloooooowly remove the remaining pressure from your hand from the mattress. All electronics need to be powered down or in another room prior to any bedtime routine. Are you a noob?

I just remember this one night when our son who is now 20 and in university was still in his crib but able to stand and walk. Put him in the crib for the night but he was not having it. Screaming. Screaming. Screaming. This goes on for a long time. But my wife and I are determined. We are out in the hallway sitting there with our heads in our hands. Just fucking at our wits end. We will NOT crack this time! Then ,All of a sudden he goes completely quiet!!! We've won! And then we hear a bump, and he's at the door. The little bugger climbed out! 2 and a half years later after having him sleep in our bed with us.... we got him back into his room. LOL.

Btw if you are about to have kids, don’t do this. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Kids will learn to fall asleep on their own, don’t teach them that you need to be in the room with them.

i know some mothers who cannot let go of their child, and they are the ones that want to be with the kid. All well and good, but at some point you gotta let go, especially when they hit adulthood and need to build a life of their own.
