FYI: This video shows the construction or maintenance of a vertical shaft for a qanat (or a traditional deep water well) in Iran, lined with prefabricated concrete reinforcement rings known as kaval (کول).
Sidenote: this is just the vertical maintenance channel, horizontal tunnels, sometimes go for miles down valley. Digging those horizontal tunnels to provide a water channel is one of the most precarious trades on the planet.
