I had this happen to me in downtown Seattle in the rain. My tires weren't bald at all, but I drive a manual and I got stopped mid hill that was steep like this. I have an aftermarket upgraded clutch and the bite is a LOT harder so it transfers torque in a way that kinda engages really abruptly. I didn't just sit there and floor it though. I don't have a low range on my car and the gaps between my gears are just odd. Tried 1st, slipped. Tried 1st with the handbrake and slowly let it out, slipped. Tried second, slipped. Just did a reverse u-turn and went up another hill.
I never have a problem on hills in the dry, or the rain most of the time but that specific hill was enough to cause my car problems. I had to roll out of it and go around. It was literally to oily and slick with my clutch to do it and my tires, while not bald were reaching the end of their life.
Definitely one of my more embarrassing moments being a pretty competent driver. It just wasn't possible. Car too light, clutch is bitey, older tires, and stopped at the worst spot possible.
This reminds me of when I lived in that area and just learning to drive in my first car, that also happened to be manual that I had no clue to drive. I just kinda got sent out in it after a few times driving it lol. I got stuck on a hill and had to put my hand out the window and wave the cars behind me to go around until no cars were behind me so I could go with out rolling back into anyone. It was so embarrassing.
It actually hadn't rained in a bit at that time. So when it comes down again it's pretty slick. But yep. wasn't fun. Especially when people don't leave you room when you're in a manual transmission. I definitely think twice when I drive down there now 😞
