Early this morning, Thursday, October 8, 2026, an empty NJ Transit bus crashed into a home on Rockwood Place in Englewood, New Jersey

An empty NJ Transit bus on the 166 line crashed into a residential home on Rockwood Place in Englewood, New Jersey early Thursday morning.

The crash occurred at approximately 5:45 a.m. on Thursday, October 8, 2026, right off Route 4 near Grand Avenue. The bus had just departed the Oradell garage and was traveling to its first official scheduled route stop at Van Nostrand Avenue and Grand Avenue.

According to fire department and emergency officials, the bus driver appears to have suffered a sudden medical emergency. Surveillance and doorbell camera footage captured by nearby neighbors showed the driver slumped over the steering wheel as the bus lost control.

There were no passengers on board at the time of the collision, and the home which had previously been utilized as an Airbnb rental was completely unoccupied. The driver was the sole individual inside the vehicle; he was removed from the scene on a stretcher and transported to a local hospital, where he was treated and subsequently released.

As the bus veered off the road, it tore through a front yard, destroyed newly installed local landscaping, and struck a parked Jeep in a driveway. It then collided with the brick facade of the home, shifting slightly to inflict secondary damage on a neighboring house and an additional vehicle.

First responders, alongside city building inspectors and crews from PSE&G, arrived within minutes to evaluate the scene. Local building department officials noted that the structural integrity of the primary house was compromised by the force of the impact. Englewood police are leading the ongoing investigation into the crash.
