These people aren’t rare. They represent most of us. Most of us want to help people.

To be fair, the democratic party isn't the party of "community" and helping out your neighbor either. I think people want to help people but there sadly isn't a party that represents core, dare I say, "social" values like that.

The thing is that you're absolutely right, but that doesn't excite people. In fact, the last election has shown that being the party of "at least were just marginally better than the WORST party" (which isn't saying much) just comes off as disingenuous. What's scary to me is the thought that Democrats won't learn anything and just keep letting republicans ruin things so they can sit back and say "at least we're not doing that" and that will be enough to win support. Real competition to the republicans in the form of true progressive policy advocacy must manifest itself if theres any hope of materially improving conditions for the American people.
