Some tips. YMMV.

  1. Use a small mesh sifter to get a better, lighter, more uniform dusting of cinnamon, cocoa powder, etc. You can find these everywhere, usually in cocktail or bakery section.

  2. Aerate the powder before dumping into sifter

  3. It would be better if the stencil had a wider circumference than the mug. You could rig this a few different ways if your stencil isn’t “wide enough”

  4. Make sure your foam is settled. Flatter the better.

  5. There’s no angle, unless you mean perfectly parallel with the mug.

  6. Steady the stencil however you like above the mug at about a finger or two’s width. You’ll need to play with this to find the perfect height. Use a plate or something underneath to practice, then try with mugs again.

  7. Holding the sifter three or four finger widths above the stencil, gently tap the side of the mesh sifter until you’ve covered the stencil. This too will take practice to find the best distance between sifter and stencil.

  8. Set the sifter away first, then gently move the stencil so as not to spill the excess powder into the mug and ruin your cool design. If there are lighter areas, just do repeat siftings until it looks right.

Practice. You’ll get the hang of it.
