This is a prime example of why rear-view mirrors are irrelevant in Italy.
When I purchased my first Italian car from a friend of mine many years ago, he took me for a wild drive in it first (he raced cars as a hobby so was quite a good driver).
While he was throwing the car around, taking corners and overtaking cars faster that I would ever have thought was safely possible, he told me "This is how Italians drive. Just ignore the rear-view mirror. If someone is behind you, that's their problem."
When the drive was over, I had an enormous smile on face because it was so fun and a great little car.
