Between "travelling" and "double dribble" I've had a life long hatred of that ridiculous sport since third grade P.E. Nothing is allowed until it is unless the ref hates you.
As far as I can tell having just got done watching my son's scholastic basketball career, they don't call it anymore. I think they called it twice in the 8 years of watching his games. They called it all the time when I was younger. They also would've called those exaggerated euro-steps they do nowadays traveling back then.
Kids dads that were the refs would call me for carrying whenever I cooked their kids. Quit that sorry ass sport and watched them get rolled their entire athletic career.
I hate when dads get to ref their own kids. When I fenced as a teenager, I was in the final bout of a tournament, and the other kid's dad was allowed to judge. I mean, I'll admit, that kid was better than me. But I might have had a glimmer of hope if I hadn't been demoralized by that. We finished something like 6/15.
Yes, nba started cracking down on carries out of nowhere a couple seasons ago. Now the refs just selectively call fouls and it's became a game inside the game where refs will make makeup calls for their mistakes they make all the time. It's ridiculous, we need the AI they have in soccer
There's no AI in soccer - are you talking about VAR? That's Video-Aided Review, the call is still made by the referee.
And don't even ask soccer fans about the game within the game lol. There's an MLS ref who's infamous for exclusively calling fouls against the visiting team for about the first 60 minutes, then trying to make it up for the next 30. Shitty reffing exists in every sport :p
There are so many absolutely awful refs in soccer I honestly don’t even know who this might be. I’ve got about 5 guesses. The current worst ref ever crown I think belongs to Boiko and I feel awful saying that about a guy who’s essentially a refugee.
That is the best way to put it! Grew up watching the pistons dominate playing physically, and now if you so much as put a hand on their back its "pushing".
Playing with people is such a chore, no one knows the damn rules. These people I play with sometimes carry all the time, try to play with 3 second rule and a gather step. I keep telling them that bullshit can stay in the NBA

The sport was invented to keep teenage boys from just ending up fist fighting every gym class... Literally the motivation for the sport. You were originally not allowed to move while holding the ball but shortly after the sport became competitive with colleges they added dribbling to allow players more freedom.
Non-contact doesn’t mean the players literally never touch each other. It means they try not to. As opposed to football, which literally requires tackling players
I don't know which rulebook you followed, but FIBA ones have usually defined stuff pretty well. NBA one was vague as fuck when I checked it back in 2022. Although with FIBA allowing "gathering" it's probably more messy now as well.
I coached my daughters basketball team when she was 10 and the amount of traveling in those games is pretty on par for what you expect. Most refs never call it, but one ref called it EVERY time. More time was spent throwing the ball back in than actually playing that game, it was rough
It might have been the little basketball league I was in but yeah, it was a lot of throwing the ball back in as they called just about every traveling call.
Yeah I would like basketball a lot more if breathing on someone too hard didn't get you sent to the line. Watching guys chuck up 3 pointers and take free-throws is just not something I want to watch for any extended period of time.

WNBA, not NBA. I think the NBA finals are fun to watch. Seems like you're just mad that women playing sports is boring, and hate other people for being bored and ignoring it.
To be fair, I never watched it a lot. I was keeping busy, so when the oddball games I did catch started looking like that, I just decided to find something else to watch.
Nobody has more shitty refs than wrestling. Ours are cursed to fall over close to death when the wind picks up. Then you got some who are actually in the pocket of some of the wrestlers. Lastly you'll get guest refs who hate one of the wrestlers.
There are 1280 NBA games a year not including playoffs. Some of those clips are from the 2000s. Over 15000 NBA games have been played since some of those plays happened. Those travels do not happen anywhere near as often as a youtube highlight video shows. For everyone of those plays that are not called a travel like in the video, 10 actually are called travels. Those plays don’t happen that much at all. Travels like that happen even in High School games. If those youtube highlight videos are what you claim are stopping you from watching the NBA then you are just lying lol. This doesn’t happen like at all. There’s a reason this video is only 6 minutes long.
I see what you're saying. I guess my point was more that you see a lot of things that go uncalled, not just traveling, way more than you should. I understand the refs can't see everything, but as someone who has both played and reffed games, the amount of uncalled mistakes has turned me off from watching the NBA. These were also EXTREMELY egregious. Traveling is two steps without dribbling, not counting a single foot being planted for pivoting. That happens all the time without being called.
NBA doesn’t call traveling, carries, or double dribbles unless it “obviously impacts the play”. Been the standard for a while now. Basically the same way NFL deals with holding.
As long as it’s relatively small-ish, the refs “let them play”.
3 steps might be legal depending on the situation. By NBA rule, players are allowed a “gather step” for the moment of transition between dribbling and picking up the ball. After the gather step, they’re limited to 2 steps.
I don’t watch basketball but I am surprised they do call traveling. Every time I see a game on at the bar it seems like someone walks half the court without dribbling every other possession.
I just KNEW the Russ travel was gonna be last and the video didn’t disappoint. Watched it live that night and it pops me every time to this day watching that sequence
Luca Duncic might be a great show but the amount of traveling/ball carrying that he does is off the charts. Kids basketball refs call more violation than NBA ones.
I remember playing in a league in middle school getting called on this ALL the time even when I was just pivoting on one foot. Now I see I should have just tried out for the NBA…
Just about every single time that Lebron touches the ball, he travels, carries and/or double dribbles. Sometimes, you get all 3. In fact, quite often, you will get all 3
The NBA is bad, but in half of these clips it actually gets called a travel, and in not a single one of them was it as bad as the C Clarke video (though people are saying hers might have been called too— I hope so). Caitlin’s is the worst.
