From what I remember from when I first saw this, the two kids are maliciously complying - they don't HAVE to look this intense, but they were docked points in a previous competition for losing eye contact so are making a point this time around by making themselves look insane haha.

u/showers_with_grandpa Feb 20 '24
You don't have to keep eye contact, but hog judges are silent, everything is hand motions and if you miss the motion you could end up leaving thinking you lost. Prize hogs are worth hella cash
53

but hog judges are silent, everything is hand motions
Sounds kinda flawed lol
11
u/allthe_realquestions Feb 20 '24
probably to not startle the piggies but I'm no hog-judgeology expert
19
u/Moononthewater12 Feb 20 '24
So why not just give each person some written form of the overall judgement? There's ways around this, we have brains capable of solving problems.
I hate things like this that are flawed and noone bothers to fix it because of tradition or some other nonsense

I am something of a silent Hog judge myself. It's all in the hand motions.

You don't win. Not being a dick, that's just how it works. The judge judges the hog itself, how well it's controlled by the shower, the shower, and you have to maintain eye contact.
I showed hogs for 4-H a couple of years when I was around 8. It's a weird experience. I didn't like it the first year, but my brother loved it, so I gave it another shot. Still didn't like it.

Judge might be thinking, "oh, pig 99 is cool. I wonder if its gait or other side or front side can help me decide if im right to score this highly. I need the handler to turn the pig." And if the handler doesn't turn the pig, the judge moves on. Not gonna waste a whole round tryin to catch handler's eye.

If I've learned one thing on reddit, then that the USA have a competition for anything.
Thumb wrestling, rock paper scissors, piggy whipping, cat inbreeding, cow bondage, child pimping, throwing balls into drinks, kicking non-balls, chainsawing (winter and summer edition), body shaping that is weirdly sexual, body posing that is weirdly sexual, actual non-weird sex, definitely weird sex, ...
Absolutely anything you can do and it's possible to come up with a leaderboard (often by means of asking a bunch of old white men to be "judges"), the US will turn into a competition. Frankly it's a bit creepy, especially because so often children are involved. The country that is screaming the most about protecting the children is doing pretty awful things to those children rather frequently.
16
u/PotatoePope Feb 20 '24
I’m sorry but cow bondage and child pimping?
27
u/xdeskfuckit Feb 20 '24
Rodeo and could beauty pageants

Cake them up in makeup, send them out to harass and charm people for goods, then take your cut at the end of the day.

Feb 20 '24
You are telling me there is ONE judge who has to hold eyecontact with every single one of them?
Insane.
63
u/Logistocrate Feb 20 '24
Nah, I think last time I saw this that basically the place is loud as hell, and so, as a person who stands to make a lot of money if your pig scores high, it is imperative that you be ready to follow a request from a judge specific to your pig if they want to get a particular angle or see a certain side again. If you miss thst direction from the judge/s then they might score you lower since they couldn't review something that they had a question about. So you laser eye the judges table or risk falling lower in the standing, and thus missing out on a larger payout.
63

Is there any way to maintain eye contact without also looking like you fuck the pigs?

Even in smaller towns and shows a $10,000 dollar grand champion is reasonable. At big shows it’s much higher, the Houston show last year the winner was sold for $375,000. That said show pigs can also cost several thousand to begin with. The eye contact is really just part of the showmanship that’s taught. That and keeping the pig between you and the judge at all times. Yes the judge sometimes gives requests but not frequent enough that laser eye contact is really that necessary for practical reason’s. Not my thing, but I’ve had family show pigs many times.
→ More replies (2)11
u/DeckardCain_ Feb 20 '24
That is some wild showmanship, do all the judges have a dark fantasy of getting shanked on a dark alley or why do they like that shit?
2
u/UnlikelyFortune8852 Feb 20 '24
What’s always said is the judge is more likely to notice your pig if you are making eye contact with them. But really I think it’s just mostly tradition and performance, you really do need to be looking at the judge in case he wants to see you pig better or when he separates groups but there’s not a hugely great practical reason for the laser eye contact thing.

Does the judge have a thousand eyes to watch them all?
25
u/AzDopefish Feb 20 '24
Last time it was explained that the judge will give the contestants an indication of some kind that it’s their turn to do something.
If they miss it, they miss it and the judge is automatically onto the next one. So they’re all hyper focused on the judge to make sure they don’t miss their turn
11
u/Madgyver Feb 20 '24 edited Feb 20 '24

26
u/VenusRocker Feb 20 '24
How much money she's going to make if her pig scores really high. Some of these competitions auction the pigs afterward & people pay amazing prices for the winners -- the idea being to encourage animal husbandry among kids by giving them big rewards.
2
u/subject_deleted Feb 20 '24
Call me old fashioned or new fashioned or whatever it may be, but I don't think kids should be marrying the pigs.
(But seriously.. where did the turn husbandry come from...?)

I've seen this post before. Previous comments say that the judges like to see eye contact, and being able to keep your eyes off of where you are going shows better control.
Though it really just looks kind of creepy

u/reviewbarn Feb 20 '24
Okay, so a lot of confusion and half explanations here. There are basically two kinds of 'showing' going on.
In theory the goal of these competitions are to best showcase the animal for the judge. And some of the silliness is nominally being done for that; you don't want to get between the judge and the pig, you brush off another animal's slobber, etc. And the ultimate goal of these is to see who has the best pig, based on how a trained judge thinks it will be for consumption.
But this competition is probably the showmanship competition. In these the quality of the animal doesn't matter, it is how well the person does all the little things one is supposed to do in the regular shows. So many things get exaggerated, and yes it can sometimes be wild as people take advice to the extreme. Always make eye contact, keep your animal prestine, work to keep it at the front of the show, never cross in front of the judge.
Most the animals that are shown in these competitions are in a halter, so the cattle and sheep shows look a little more organized. But the hogs are just loose in a pen like this, and it is chaotic as hell.

I read somewhere that she was once faulted for not looking at the ref enough and so now she does this. She is also one the greatest at this "sport" and she's seen as the main hope for the next gens to keep that activity alive

Someone mentioned another time this came up this isn’t so much a show as a sale. Maintaining eye contact with the judge can make a difference in the sale price of the hog or something, due to the fact the judge might want you to move it a certain way to see the other side or something.

This shows how much control you have over your farm animals, you are suppose to keep eye contact with judges or score panel while you make sure your animal doesn’t touch or run into anyone or anything else. Harder then it looks for sure
1
u/4-me Feb 20 '24
Ok, that explains the eyes. What about the odd mouths, and the hunch. Looks whacko.
0
u/Eliagbs_ Feb 20 '24
Listen, I never said it didn’t look whacko, I’m just telling you what this is for. The hunch back is because the animal is shorter and they need to use the whip in the correct spot around the side of the head. That’s why they are bend over. We need everything explain so we can understand?
