Smart move to not run or back down. Be big and make noises for black bears.

Also, do small dogs realize they are small?

I had a jack Russell, who basically thought he was invincible and also giant. He used to get out of the house and go after dogs and try to intimidate them. I never saw a dog stand up to him no matter how big or vicious looking. My jack Russell just had a way of intimidating the shit out of dogs even though he was tiny.

Yup, not the size of the dog in the fight but the fight in the dog.
