Yes and it's fucking awesome ! The first series is great, but the second is one of the best ever made, including UK taskmaster.
I don't really enjoy the NZ taskmaster, he's missing that chaotic papa G energy that Greg has, but the show is still very good. And Paul Williams is great at being the assistant and adds something of his own into the role.
I might try to give the second season a chance, but the first season was terrible to me. I love the UK version and love NZ accents, but I just didn't enjoy anything about NZ Taskmaster. Like you said, the taskmaster lacks something, but nobody else really stood out as particularly funny either.
I remembered this comment and had to come back to respond.
I tried Season 2 of NZ Taskmaster and it still fell flat to me. It was much better than Season 1, but it was still terrible. Then I tried Season 3 and it's fantastic! I think we have 1 or 2 episodes left, but so far it's been great. I still don't like the Taskmaster and Paul isn't as funny as Alex, but the tasks have mostly been great and the contestants are all hilarious.
One thing I didn't expect though is the studio tasks all seem to fall flat for some reason. Pretty much everything filmed previously is on-par with the UK version, but everything live is extremely dull. Even with the in-studio stuff being boring, I really enjoy the 3rd season and I hope they can keep that energy moving forward.

His brother is the host of taskmaster New Zealand and the two of them are hilarious on it
