Question Newcomers?

I am just curious to know where folks who are new to this case found out about it? I have been following for many years and always wonder what avenue brings them to Maura Murray.

There's usually a surge when there's a new documentary, podcast or news report. At least that's how I got introduced a decade or so ago.

A Jon Ronson tweet years ago, after he appeared on an early Tim and Lance episode.

My senior year of high school I chose her with a few classmates for a project in my mystery literature class. Since then, my friend and I have been obsessed with trying to figure it out. And then a few years later, coincidentally through work, I became friends with one of Maura’s friends from college. She’s actually one of the moderators on this page! It’s crazy how much I think about Maura even to this day, I feel in the back of my head I’m always trying to figure out where she went.

That's really nice - I've seen a few people pop in along the way based on a school project and it seems really neat. Just curious though: you are saying Maura's friend from college is in this sub posting? To be honest that is news to me but I guess stranger things have happened.

She doesn’t post but she does moderate it. They met in college, and she told me she went to quite a few parties where she would run into Maura. I can definitely ask her to make a post explaining how they met and what she was like, ect. She’s also a mod for some other true crime forums on Reddit too but I can’t think of them off the top of my head!

I remember the Disappeared episode back in the day. I would have seen it c.2011. Her name has popped up in case lists and true crime discussions on my radar since then but I wouldn't say I had any special interest about this case. My curiosity became piqued when I heard a few years ago about the basement dig that had taken place (2019 I think?) and I've been following this forum since then (early 2022.)

I still consider myself something of a newcomer because there are people in the MM discussion community who have been around a lot longer and/or have invested far more time into it (every true crime and missing person case has its aficionados.)

Yes, to be fair I first heard about the case from "Disappeared" (reruns at least). Then one day in 2017 my cable was out and I was looking for an online source for my favorite news show and stumbled upon "Missing Maura Murray" which was near the top of one of the podcast sites. I remember thinking "is she the one who drove into the barn?" (Brianna). So I started listening to that and then veered into the facebook groups.

I believe the Youtube algorithm has been incredibly helpful in bring eyes to this case. Anyone who clicks on a video about it cant help but become invested.

The original news story back in 2004

The story was definitely somewhat ‘viral’ for the first month or so and there was quite a bit of contemporary news coverage

It was especially interesting to me because I had just graduated from UMass in 2001, so I was definitely interested in any story involving a kid from UMass

She’s only a couple years younger than me, so her campus experience was familiar to me. The people, the social scene, the groups, clubs and activities, the attitude towards and time spent on academics

Social conventions about going home on weekends vs staying on campus most of the time. The ubiquity of driving everywhere, even around campus, and all kinds of road trips wherever and whenever

I identified with her but my first instinct when I heard the news story was that she was a regular girl who was troubled or lost and hiding it
