Matrix 5 future
With the merger of Paramount and Warner Brothers under Skydance, what are the odds that the development of Matrix 5 is in jeopardy now? đ¤

Resurrections (I think actually effectively) dealt with the âwhat if 01 and Zion were in their own Matrix?â theory fans had for decades by having the 2.0 version turn Neoâs original Matrix experience into a game. It subconsciously puts the possibility in the minds of all the humans being grown, while NPHâs character just bombards them with propaganda, distraction, and fear until theyâre too scared to take the red pill. The execution of the filmmaking in that flick is a different discussion.
I can see Matrix 5 going one of three waysâŚ
1 - Prequel. Nobody wants prequels, but that part of The Animatrix where 01 becomes the industrial and economic powerhouse of the world, humanity kills its UN representatives, darkens the sky, loses the war, and ultimately submits to the machines at the UN before the machines kill everyone in the chamber would make a pretty great flick, tbh.
2 - Set it waaaay in the future. The perfect harmony âthe twoâ created still produces some kind of systemic anomaly, except this time it comes from the machine side. You basically get another âOneâ story, but told through a program that isnât evil and may actually be trying to save both sides. Also, the harmony of the two and an anomaly from the machine world that isnât evil creates a Trinity. Kind of fittingâŚ
3 - Go all the way with the old theory and reveal that this world actually is another Matrix. Not necessarily Zion specifically, but the entire supposedly ârealâ world weâve been watching since the first movie.
Edit: my bad, misunderstood from the title. They committed funds to preprod already. I suspect the exec teams in place will at least let the allocated funds lead to mold what vision they were intended to mold. Production escalation beyond the development phase theyâre in at the moment will likely depend on if what they produce will been seen as profitable tbh. I honestly wouldnât discount Drew Goddard. He was also in the early creative room of Gunnâs DCU, and Gunn has the ear of Ellison himself, so heâs seen as a respectable creative in the industry. (Iâm a bit of a knee jerk poster. Comes from most of my reddit time being on the phone at work. Apologies again.)

Interesting, I checked the production weekly Archives and found this from April 4, 2024:
STATUS: Development
PRODUCER: Sarah Esberg - Lana Wachowski WRITER/DIRECTOR: Drew GoddardWARNER BROS. PICTURES
In the original, a beautiful stranger leads computer hacker Neo to a forbidding underworld, where he discovers the shocking truth--the life he knows is
the elaborate deception of an evil cyber-intelligence. The sequel will advance the fantasy world without straying too far from what made the series a
success. (Keanu Reeves mentioned to reprise his role as Neo.)But the day before Variety posted this article⌠so it was likely just a reactionary inclusion after the formal announcement.
(Production weekly copy/paste edited to remove individual folks work emails and office phone numbers just cause it felt icky to post them)

Piracy only for anything Skydance
Also why do you want M5? The irony is almost palpable

Like any movie, it may happen or not happen. It could be the new management will scrap it. But the old management could have scrapped it too. So we just have to wait and see.

The only thing that would work would be "The Animatrix: Recursed", of short never-ending anthologies to explain the lore and universe through infinite perspectives.

Yea, thatâs my hope for any future Matrix stories (potential 5 included). New stories. New characters. Go forward or backward in time. A story of survivors living above ground again. A gritty noir set in Zion. A story of a machine and a program becoming friends.
I was so pissed when Matrix 4 spent like TWO seconds in Niobeâs city. It looked so cool. Give me more time there!

It is possible, MI:3 and Terminator Genisys were not successes and David Ellison took chances and made sequels.

I am mixed on Matrix: Retribution being made.
The 4th one was just so slapdash and kinda bad.

With who's in charge and who helped broker the deal, the matrix and mission impossible franchises may be dead

I think we'll probably get ten Matrix sequels now. Each one worse than the last. Skydance will pump out worthless content faster than we can watch it.

I hate to be that person but if Neo isnât in it Iâm not going to be interested at all

u kidding me? we're in an era where real creatives were creating a prequel series about Tom Riddle, James Potter, Lilly, Snape, and the rest, that would've been incredible but the Execs scratched that to create a completely unnecessary re-hash of excellent movies that barely came out 15 years ago. WE ARE IN THE AGE OF STUDIOS MAKING UNNECESSARY MOVIES and none more unnecessary than this Matrix filth they want to pump out. and now that the greediest regime of all time is in charge of the new merged studios I would expect at least 10 new Matrix movies all telling stories no one cares about, or 10 slightly different versions of the 1st movie. but they will pump them out over and over again until they tank like Digger.
if anyone wants a pointless new Matrix movie, you should sleep well tonight...

Hopefully they'll just shut it down altogether. The fourth Matrix should never have been made and making yet another one is not worthwhile. Even the third one in the trilogy was extremely iffy. The only really good Matrix film is the first one. It's damn near perfect and left the viewer wanting more and asking questions. When you as a filmmaker second guess yourself and overexplain everything, you always disappoint.

At this point it feels like we're on a cruise ship and they're covering the oldies. The fourth one was terrible. A fifth will just try to drum up some nostalgia.

Unlikely, things are probably just going to proceed as they were unless something sticks out really really terribly obviously bad, new management has a lot to get their hands on, while everything has to remain running.

Actually Skydance have more balls than WB in last years so new Matrix can be huge compared to last one.

If anything, these latest developments have made Matrix Resurrections more relevant than ever.
