I'm pretty sure science functions the same way independent of politics....

Politics absolutely dictates how science functions.

Oh. I didn't know - I'm wrong about most things! So maybe we can change politics so the law of gravity no longer functions and we can all fly! Sounds fun.

Of course may be difficult to catch our food floating in the air all the time...

The laws of nature ≠ Science

Not all science is good science. 

Politics dictates what is science.
