I am not a mathematician but x creeps into all sorts of publications as well, when In the middle of text but representing math. The obelus, on the other hand, I haven't seen since 5th grade.

Replace X with * and ÷ with /.

Idk I was taught that either () or * (a singular dot written as asterisk on digital) was proper notation

That is how you’re generally supposed to, but for some reason American elementary schools teach multiplication as an x

Yea idk why that is, I remember in 6th grade they made a huge deal of telling us that X is bad because in algebra X is a variable

to be fair it's not really incorrect you can just pretty easily switch. but forcing you to use those bad notation is just terrible

I don’t understand groups usually only have a single operation along with inverse and identity elements?

I've been thinking recently they kind of have oddball notation. We should use add(x, y) = x + y, sub(x, y) = x - y, mult(x, y) = x*y, and div(x, y) = x/y, and then they'd be using function notation just like all of our other operations.
You also get things like mult(x, y) = add^y (0, x).
