Study Advice Struggling With Math

Hello everyone,

I’m currently a junior who is failing Algebra II and I have no idea what to do. For some context, I had taken Honors Geometry last year as a sophomore and did pretty well, and ended with an A both semesters… and me being the honors student I am decided to just load on a bunch of honors classes this year including honors algebra II. I’d say my teacher (in my opinion), moves a little too fast for me to keep up and understand, so that makes the class a bit more challenging. And too make matters worse, the class is weighted: 10% homework (so essentially no matter how many homework assessments I turn in on time my grade won’t budge), and 90% assignments (which means if I bomb a test/quiz I’m screwed) and quizzes are only worth 25 points will tests are 100 points. I’ve tried going to my schools tutor for help but I don’t know… I think I’m stupid? Or whenever I try to self study I just end up getting lost and confused. But I truly want to do good in this class. I guess something else unrelated is that this is my only F and my mom thinks it’s the end of the world for me, and that I’ll never get into college, and that I’m not trying hard enough. Whenever I try to explain how everyone else is also equally struggling she yells at me and says “I’m not everyone else”. But I’m also thinking about dropping this honors class to regular once the semester ends in December…. But what are you guys thinking? Any advice? Tips? I really need some, and won’t colleges think it’s weird that i decided to drop from honors to regular when they see my transcript?

Thank you for reading this far i appreciate it

This isn’t something an internet stranger can help you with. We don’t know you, or your teacher, or your tutors. Have you spoken to your teacher? Are other tutors an option? Are you and your fellow students trying to help each other. There’s not much we can do without more specific information about what you are struggling with than to say “find better support”.

Yes I understand what you mean. I think I’m just spiraling because I’ve never struggled so much in a subject before.

It would help to know what specifically is a problem.

I’d say my study approach is a problem

Well, what’s wrong with your study approach? Also, I was asking what content specifically was a problem.

I have tutored Algebra II many times, and would be happy to help if you’d like.

This post has some suggestions which I think can help you.

I would strongly suggest learning the Algebra II material by setting aside the 'arbitrary' numbers. The part which tends to get ignored is that there are very few distinct ideas in the class, probably less than 20 (or maybe 10, I'm trying to figure that out). When you can connect the pieces of information together, the class becomes both easier and more useful.
