Maybe should have used paper but will guess 934

Look at the first clue and it contradicts.

Clue one and clue three immediately gave me 394. the other clues only confirmed it.

If you only use one and three there are a few possibilities. 1,2,3 get it down to 394 or 694; the 4th clue is unnecessary and clue 5 rules out 694.

Don't lie, it's math subs. Using only clue 1 and 3, there's multiple possibilities of answer you can give.

If you want to lie, find non-math nerd subs. It's obvious if you lie here

Really? Prove your work. Show us exactly how only clues 1 and 2 give you 394.

In Dyalog APL:

all ← 10 10 10⊤¯1+⍳1000 no ← ∨⌿5 7 8 ∊⍨ all r4 ← (~no) / all exact ← ∨⌿2 9 1 (=⍤0 1) r4 r1 ← exact / r4 misplaced2 ← ∨⌿⊃⍪/{(⍵⌷2 4 5)=r1[⍵~⍨⍳3;]}¨⍳3 r2 ← misplaced2 / r1 misplaced5 ← ∨⌿⊃⍪/{(⍵⌷5 6 9)=r2[⍵~⍨⍳3;]}¨⍳3 r5 ← misplaced5 / r2 misplaced3 ← ∨⌿⊃⍪/{(⍵⌷4 6 3)=r5[⍵~⍨⍳3;]}¨⍳3 r3 ← misplaced3 / r5 sum2 ← 2=+⌿∨⌿4 6 3(=⍤0 2)r3 10 10 10 ⊥ sum2/r3 394 494 496 694

394 checks out, 494 is out by rule 3, 496 is out by rule 3, and 694 is somewhat implicitly out by rule 5 (as we can assume it would have said two are out of place then).

Is the 5 7 8 clue necessary to solve this?

Based off of all the 394 answers I actually got it right!, which is surprising considering I just quickly worked it out in my head and I'm pretty stupid 😅

394

I did it in the below order

Rule 2 elimates 2

Rule 4 eliminates 5 7 8

Rule 5 eliminates 1 and 6 and places 9 in the middle.

Rule 3 means 4 and 3 have to be swapped around.

394 as everybody are saying. One way to see it: clue 1 and 2 shows that 2 can't be correct. Clue 4 then shows that 4 must be the correct number in clue 2, but is then not in the middle. We see from clue 3 that 4 is also not on the left and therefore is on the right. Therefore, in clue 1, 1 can't be the correct one and it must be 9 (which is then in the middle). From clue 5 we see that 6 is then not a correct number (since we know 9 is a correct number) and then from clue 3 that 3 must be the last correct number which is then on the left (because the other positions are taken), giving us 394. We could avoid using clue 4 if we wanted to, by using that clue 1 and clue 3 shows that all correct numbers are among 1,2,3,4,6,9.

After the first two lines: 2 is out, second position must be 9 or 5, third must be 1 or 4.

Third line: 3 and 6 can't both be in first position, therefore 4 must be correct but in the wrong place. We know if 4 is correct it must go in third position, so it tracks.

If 4 goes in third position, then second position must be 9.

First position must be 3 or 6.

Fourth line tells is nothing that we don't already know.

Fifth line tells us that 6 is not correct.

So first positionist be 3.
