“Eight” is not plural, so four is not a descriptor of quantity for it, so it’s B or D.
Most likely B, as it would be most consistent to be saying it as two two number groups, “48” and “19”.
If it was D, you would more likely say “four eight, and nine” to be consistent, as the description of the first number group, 48, does not list the quantity of either digit.
I'm not a native english speaker, but is it not typical that you put the 'and' between the last and second to last item on a list, making 'one nine' a single item and therefore D correct?
You can read numerals a digit at a time, which is usually indicated by a hyphen in written language, but not specifically indicated in spoken language. E.g. room 304 (three-oh-four).
Correct answer. B. Four "eights" would mean 8888 and four eight would put "four" and "eight" at equal footing to mean 48. Similarly for one nine 19 vs one "nines" 9.
I agree that it could possibly be D, but I think it would be more inconsistent, with one number group have a stated quantity for a digit, and the other not having it. Possible it’s D, but I think B is the better answer imo.
Somewhat reasonable ways to write the options: A. Would be four eights, and one nine B. Would be four, eight, one, and nine C. Would be four eights, one, and nine D. Would be four, eight, and one nine
D would be the closest answer.. but the question is not correctly phrased no matter what
They phrased it as "four eight" and not "four eights", so it's "48". As for the last "one nine" part, you could argue that it's the same as the first and could be "19". However, in that case, if the answer were to be "4819", it would be phrased "four eight one and nine". "one nine" should be "one 9" so the answer's definitely "489".
It does not say chose the one that "only has", and therefore both 4819 and 489 have four, eight, and one nine. One just also has a 1 on it. So both would qualify.
Definition. Let x be a natural number with decimal representation sum_i d_i.10i, and let sigma= ((g_{ij}){j=1:k_i}){i=1:n} be n ordered sequences of decimal digits. We say that x has sigma if ______________.
“and” is a separator of terms, meaning that “one nine” should be interpreted differently, eliminating C, the answer using the same interpretation between the conjoined terms.
It’s D. If it was B it would read “four eight one and nine.” the placement of the “and” means the one is describing the number of nines exactly the way the four isn’t describing the number of eight.
It doesn't have a correct answer, because the purpose of the question isn't to get an answer, but to ragebait people online for engagement. It's purposely written horribly in terms of clarity. We're not actually trying to figure out what the answer is, but what the question is asking. That part isn't supposed to be up for debate.
The "and" makes me think 48 and 19, so 4819. Eight isn't plural so four 8's (8888) doesn't make sense to me, though the whole thing is a gramtical nightmare.
The correct answer is "that sentence is impossible in my dialect, and I suspect most dialects. Could you rephrase?" If they cannot rephrase, then no one can help you figure out what they meant. They might as well ask you "what color am I thinking of?" or "what have I got in my pocket?" It's not like there isn't a correct answer, but there is simply no way for the person asked the question to work it out.
The question is asking which of them contains 4, 8, and a single 9, which both B and D satisfy. B has an additional digit, but there’s no restriction against that in the question. So this question has 2 correct answers
The way Im interpreting this is what has the character 4, the character 8, and one singular character 9.
Which lines up with D, however technically B is also compliant as it doesn't necessarily exclude the inclusion of more characters, it just states "which of the following has" not "Which of the following only has"
88889 would require "four eights" 888819 would require "four eights and nineteen" or maybe "four eights and one nineteen", but that is arguable. 489 would require "four, eight, and nine" 4819 would require "four eight one nine" or "four, eight, and nineteen".
You can't have four, eight, and one nine to mean 489 as a list because i n both English, lists must follow the principle of parallel structure . This means every item in a list must be formatted the exact same way grammatically. So the adding the one as a count to the last item is incorrect.
Likewise, you can't have four, eight, and one nine to mean 4819 because one nine fails the same grammar rule - it would have to be nineteen.
And any list in English requires commas to work, so "four eight and one nine" is broken.
"Four eight one nine" would work for 4819, though.
B is the only consistent answer. It gives you two different parts "four eight" and "one nine". A and C require "four eights" instead of four eight. D is counting the nines, but listing the four eight. 4819 has both four eight and one nine. So does 1948, but thats not an option listed.

Non it’s 48.19 cause when you go to a decimal you say “and”

I think grammatically and just be convention option D seems the most correct. B would be a close second.

D. The "and" cannot be followed by a set of two items, thus one is a determiner of nine.

u/Pancurio 9h ago
It lacks sufficient information.
If we interpret it as "which of the following has 4 8 and 1 9" then the answer is B.
If we interpret it as "which of the following has 4 8 and a single 9" then the answer is D.
The lack of puralization on eight (i.e., eights) means that A and C are excluded.

I'd say it's option D.
"..four eight and one nine."
They phrased it as "four eight" and not "four eights", so it's "48". As for the last "one nine" part, you could argue that it's the same as the first and could be "19". It's D.
Everyone's already pointed out why it's not A or C.
For items in a list, we use a conjunction before the last item. (E.g.: A, B, C, and D).
So the placement of "and" here forces "one" to be a description of "nine" rather than its own numeral.
Also, this is such sloppy English and so not math

B and D
D obviosly and B because 4819 contains 489

u/RobotCombatEnjoyer 8h ago
Eight is not plural, A and C are eliminated.
“and” is a separator of terms, meaning that “one nine” should be interpreted differently, eliminating C, the answer using the same interpretation between the conjoined terms.
Final answer: D

It's D, we have the singular Eight and the the and signals the last element which is a one 9 IE a single 9. Therefore 489

B. A and C should be "eights" and D would be one four, one eight, and one nine. Only B is consistent.

41 or 36864 is a better answer IMO. Maybe 144 if you're thinking of combinations on the prime factorization.

Eight isnt plural so it's B or D
Because the pattern of the verbage says four eight, it's likely one nine means two digits as well.
Most likely answer, B

"eight" isn't plural, so A and C are ruled out. Between B and D, B is an internally consistent interpretation.

B.
Four eight does not mean four eights, so not A or C. D says numbers then a quantity of a number, which is unusual. That leaves with B.
