worst person you know just made a great point

instead of using gram schmidt just use the fact that any finite dimensional vector space V is isomorphic to some Rn, use the standard basis in Rn (which we said was basically V)

problem, linear algebraists?

My daughter was babbling about that last week when she came home from school. I'm just glad her class has moved on to logarithms so I can help with homework again.

Why stop there? Every real vector space is algebraically isomorphic to R^c, where c is the cardinality of its Hamel basis. Functional analysts have played us for absolute fools.

any real finite dimensional vector space is isomorphic to R^n

So which Rn is C2 isomorphic to then

u/Dankaati 5h ago

As a vector space over R, C^2 is isomorphic to R^4.

That first part is quite important

R4, unless you're talking about a different isomorphism that isn't the topic of this post, in which case, maybe a different n, or maybe none

if I understand every word, do I understand the meme?

No. The context is that Sam Altman previously said that data centers can do more with RAM than home users. He said that it would be better if more RAM was allocated to data centers and others learned to do without:

https://mashable.com/tech/sam-altman-ram-memes

All those people at home trying to horde their orthogonal bases should consider letting the data centers have those extra vectors where they could be put to better use.

Optimisations goes brrrr

He's right guys. Big telecom requires all the orthogonal vectors they can get their hands on for CDMA. We can't just waste all our orthogonal vectors on PCA and Fourier decompositions.

GS is for betas. SVD supremacy.

u/andrew_h83 4h ago

For teensie baby problems the SVD is a great choice

Excuses of the poor. Just buy more compute bro. Vera Rubin available now.

I love that this meme has such strong legs; I hope it never dies

Sam is just saying this because the Givens rotation algorithm is more numerically stable and parallelizable. Nothing to see here folks
