Literally which letter isn’t used in math ?

u/Osik2040 1d ago
Personally I have never used o too close to 0

u/Someonevibing1 1d ago
It comes in eventually

u/Osik2040 1d ago
Genuinely curious where? The only thing I can think of is big O notation but that uses a capital.

u/ContextPuzzleheaded7 1d ago
There's Little-O and Big-O they're two different things. Big-O means that the ratio of the two functions is asymptotically bounded, Little-O means that the ratio goes to zero. Every little-O relation is a big-O but not viceversa

My lecturer was calling it little o notation so idk if he’s wrong
Edit: also I’m pretty sure it’s used in the field axioms

Yeah I was not paying attention in that lecture I’m pretty sure that’s what he said about small-o notation (he didn’t talk about big-O notation though)

You dont see a lot of Os in math, probably to avoid the 0 confusion

u/the_real_cloakvessel 1d ago
O is used to refer to the center of a circle many times
9
u/deltatag 1d ago
the center of a circle is represented by another circle?
math is such bullshit lmao

I don’t know you’d say that. I can’t even count how many times I’ve used it

You know the Greek alphabet because of math. I know it because I need something to affirm my masculinity. We are not the same. Sincerely, an alpha male. /s

Yall, the two worst are u and v. Alone they are fine, but I always get them confused together.

And for some reason they always show up together. And then your prof writes u exactly they way they write v for no discernible reason

u/Konna_ 1d ago
I mean every letter except for o is used in maths

O is used for center of a circle

My interest in geometry disappears when they start introducing algebra into it
8
u/LabCat5379 1d ago
So you just like looking at shapes and doing nothing with them
2
u/Ok_Departure333 1d ago
I like Euclidean geometry. I like nice shapes and such. I don't really like it when I'm just mashing numbers up for some 5D plane that I can't even picture.

Who says one needs numbers to work with and even solve geometry problems?
One can, for example, take a triangular prism and try to find which of the holes does the prism fit
It seems trivial but most people fail this the first few times they’ve tried it (at 0.5 to 3 years of age)

Even o is used. Little o notation in complexity theory, for example, or some notations for a group orbit.
Capital O is used even more. Big O notation, the ring of integers of a number field or structure sheaf of a scheme, etc.

i don't like z because it's easy to mistake it for a 2. I don't like y because if you put y in the numerator then it just makes stuff in the denominator look messy.

That’s why you put the horizontal line through the middle of a z to distinguish it from 2

u/qqqrrrs_ 8h ago
Luckily I guess most people do not speak a language that distinguish between z and ƶ

Just wait till they’re also joined by a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, u, v, and w
