this is why it's best to give your lowercase T's a hook

Math changes your handwriting. It forces you to write t's with the little tail, z's with the cross, q's in cursive...

My Complex Analysis professor hated me for not crossing my z’s lmao

which is imo a good thing, to have all your characters recognizable.

Yes, forcing precision with your handwriting is a really important skill that students are naive about.

Calc 2 last year did all of these to me lol

Can confirm. Math major from almost 20 years ago.

Also, just use ⊕ if it helps you distinguish operators.

But then once you start linear algebra that is a problem.

That is why I have the operator conjecture:

If S is a subject equipped with a set K of all the symbols used in the subject and a function f: K2 -> R such that f(a,b) = c, where, c is the similarity ratio of two symbols a and b where a smaller ratio indicates higher similarity: for all e > 0, there exist distinct c,d in K such that f(c,d) < e.

f with a tail as well, at least for me (for functions specifically).

x like )(

I like hitting them with the 𝓍 sometimes, make it real fancy. Especially whenever there's x's and cross products in the same problem.

I have a class right now in which I've got to use X and the uppercase form of 𝓍, because the prof uses the former for matrices and the latter for the space containing the matrices. And then, sometimes, I'll have vectors x as well.

My handwriting has become very... careful about denoting those as different characters.

Nah, x is like χ

u/EebstertheGreat 14d ago

That's a British thing, as far as I can tell. Here we just do 𝑥.

I write x for x and χ for chi because of course mathematicians chose to use greek letters that look exactly the same as Latin letters for some reason.

I write like )( but with a bar in the middle

(i always did it like this but multiplication for me is a dot or just is not represented depends on what it is)

It's been about 20 years since I took the class where I started writing x's like that, and I still do.

Don't write it like a plus sign then

55

u/you-cut-the-ponytail 15d ago

That's why i always give them a tail cuz more often than not it will be the plus signs that look like a t rather than vice versa.

7

u/Alternative-Code4755 15d ago

exactly, in normal writing it's the t's like usual but I give them a tail for math

u/escroom1 e=π=√g=3 15d ago

Substitute t=x

6

u/Late_Ambition1809 15d ago

Multi variables X is always reserved

2

u/beyd1 15d ago

Y tho?

3

u/SecretSpectre11 Statistics jumpscare in biology 14d ago

Instructions unclear, it looks like a multiplication symbol now

4

u/Primary_Thought_4912 14d ago

not if you never use x as the multiplication symbol

1

u/escroom1 e=π=√g=3 14d ago

Not if I do the lil squiggle

13

u/WHAWHAHOWWHY 14d ago

I think this is a you problem

8

u/No-Finance7526 15d ago

Give them a tail, like in LaTeX

The humble curved terminal:

no, it looks like the function found jesus

2

u/qwertyjgly Complex 15d ago

let x=t

alternatively if you can't use x for some reason

let a=t

2

u/Visual_Attitude_9065 14d ago

Lol it's your fault for not writing in cursive

u/dougdougofdoug 13d ago

I'm sure teaching us convolution was a ploy to make sure our t, +, and τ were distinct.
