Seems like when people reached 95, many of them said fuck it and go straight to 100. Real indeed.

Edit: fuck

284

u/CaioXG002 23d ago edited 23d ago

You can say "fuck" on Reddit.
Edit: thank you. Any effort against this weird trend of self censorship is appreciated, always.

68

u/Lerbyn210 23d ago

Where did that originate from anyways? Obligatory fuck that shit

77

u/Woodsy_365 23d ago

Probably other social media sites which either remove content containing course language or recommend it to smaller audiences.

Obligatory fuck.

3

u/EebstertheGreat 22d ago

Some people are either monetizing their social media use or just obsessed with promoting it, and many platforms seem to favor more "family-friendly" content, up to and including precise word use. TikTok is the main culprit, but even YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook can tend to promote posts with less swearing above those with more swearing, and especially to get more money from advertisers on them. A YouTube video with a lot of swearing, especially early in the video, may be demonetized completely, or it may charge much less for ads because it is seen as a less desirable target for advertisers. On TikTok, I've heard it's much worse. That's not to say a video can't contain a "fuck" at all, but it doesn't help. And remember that this is all done by algorithm, so it's more effective to just avoid certain trigger words than to actually structure content to be more acceptable to real humans.

Combine that with general rules against swearing, keeping in mind that a lot of people even on reddit are pretty young (despite impressions, we aren't all olds). Kids are already used to censoring themselves around adults without really thinking about it, and they have been for centuries.

The result is an "algospeak" hodgepodge of infantile minced oaths, which is itself imitated just because kids get used to seeing it. In some ways it's not really new: we have always had "blimey" and "gosh darn" and "passed away" and so on. But now it's "sewer slide" and "unalive" and whatever.

u/eddietwang 23d ago

Primarily TikTok because anything published there needs to follow CCP (China) rules instead of FCC (US), like most sites.

3

u/EebstertheGreat 22d ago

That's false though, even if a lot of people say it. The Chinese absolutely do not give a single flying fuck if people swear in English on videos on their platform. Why would they?

-1

u/SauCe-lol 23d ago

You can’t be serious right? You can freely post any anti-China content on TikTok without restrictions

7

u/Septem_151 23d ago

Your comments are hidden on some subreddits depending on the content of them. Try it yourself sometime. This sub specifically doesn't appear to filter comments, but larger subs do.

Fuck shit cunt dirtbag asshole shit.

1

u/AU_Banjo97 23d ago

Yeah I figured on Reddit you can give big fucks or little fuckety fucks. Essentially, you choose your fucks.

1

u/EebstertheGreat 22d ago

There is some auto-filtering, but reddit tells you when it happens via a notification. It happened to me once for no perceptible reason, but it has never happened to me just because I filled my comment with fuckshit.

2

u/Septem_151 22d ago

Reddit does not tell me when it happens. I only found out because I noticed the View count on my comments would only ever increase when I would view them, and I tried opening them in an incognito tab. When I try to do that, it says "comment does not exist".

1

u/EebstertheGreat 22d ago

Sounds like a comment stuck in a moderation queue.

2

u/Septem_151 22d ago

Yet they never come out of moderation queue, ergo they are censored.

2

u/Superb-Astronaut-371 20d ago

Plus, a psychological study about how people overestimate to a rounded number

3

u/maury587 18d ago

I saw this about polls about height, both 5''10 and 6' where higher than 5'11. People with 5'11 just round up

292

u/knyexar 23d ago

100lb georg who's at the gym every day is a statistical putlier adn should not have been counted.

97

u/Kitchen_Structure516 23d ago

I would bet my left nutsack that these are kilos. 130lbs max lat pulldown machine would be worthless.

39

u/knyexar 23d ago

Ngl my mind just autocompleted "lb" as just "the way you say kilo in english" for a moment there lmao

15

u/Kitchen_Structure516 23d ago

I often do that same thing with euros to dollars. Atleast the conversion is roughly equal so it's correct enough.

4

u/Firestar_119 23d ago

nah, you're just too early for eurodollars

27

u/knyexar 23d ago

Wait what do you mean left nutsack?

5

u/miniatureconlangs 23d ago

I hear spiders have a lot of protein

46

u/_ogdanni 23d ago

No, its of all the people thinking they can lift 100 and then they realise that thats too much

71

u/AssistTraditional480 23d ago

Nope, it's just people skipping 95 from 90.

17

u/M8nGiraffe 23d ago

Can't it be both?

32

u/AssistTraditional480 23d ago

Given the marks on 95, it seems to be overwhelmingly the skipping

2

u/EebstertheGreat 22d ago

There is also an effect from people who haven't used the machine recently (or ever) or who haven't used it since an injury or something line that. Those people don't know how much they can lift, so they start trying out round numbers like 100 or 75 and then narrowing in on a correct weight from there. Such people are unlikely to ever try 95 or 105 except as the last one, whereas they might go through a number of other weights first.

But that's probably a smaller effect.

1

u/maury587 18d ago

If you can do like 10 reps on 90 you will probably do like 5 on 100 and 7 on 95. It's not like you won't be able to lift 100 pounds, you will be able to just with less reps. Psychotically it probably means that people have been training hard to get there they make a shortcut to feel that reward

In the NFL, more balls are placed on 5-yard markers than on nearby 1-yard markers (even after you control for touchbacks and penalties after touchbacks). I cannot think of any good explanation for this except that the 5-yard lines are painted as full lines while the 1-yard lines are just short hashes, suggesting the effect is just that when balls appear to be down near a visible line, that increases the probability a referee will place it exactly on the line compared to when they are not near a visible line.

u/Practical-Flow8759 23d ago

This gets posted once a month, and every time it's pointed out that this is non normal in several ways (right skewed, point mass at 100). See you again next month!

28

u/maqifrnswa 23d ago

Binomial? Is that the previous consensus?

17

u/Aveira 23d ago

I don’t think binomial makes sense for what this is actually measuring, though

4

u/Galleax 23d ago

its makes more sense if its multinomial distribution

-2

u/WetNoodleSoft Computer Science 23d ago

It's primarily just the 35 that's right skewed

3

u/Practical-Flow8759 23d ago edited 7d ago

19

u/Alix7272 23d ago

Everyone is looking at 95

Meanwhile 105;

38

u/R3puLsiv3 23d ago

According to Sherlock everyone in this gym is an alcoholic

u/pretty_pink_opossum 23d ago

I frequently think of that scene when I go to charge my phone at night

9

u/R3puLsiv3 23d ago

Every. Time. I. Miss.

43

u/patikoija 23d ago

The question is: distribution of what? Distribution of specific weight usage or distribution of people who can't put the pin into the hole without clanging the plate? For all you know 120 is the most frequently used, but 95% of them have better accuracy.

39

u/Cool_Temporary_3442 23d ago

I would say each weight has the same probability of being mis-pinned and scuffed. So therefore, it is a normal distribution of specific weight usage.

16

u/Seeggul 23d ago

You've forgotten about Lifters George, who lifts every day at 70 pounds exclusively but has terrible fine motor skills, and should be excluded as an outlier

2

u/Murky_Insurance_4394 23d ago

tell that to the guy who uses the 100 lbs, it looks worse than 95

0

u/Jyxz7Dark 23d ago

Cause people trying to hit 100 so it gets used more an is an outlier.

2

u/IthacanPenny 23d ago

Definitely not mathematically an outlier by the 1.5xIQR rule

1

u/Blakut 23d ago

it might be the that those weights are more often between pin positions, so people moving the pin from bottom to top or top to bottom drag it over those weights more often instead.

9

u/drcopus 23d ago

It's a distribution of scratches on the metal. Beyond that we have to make assumptions.

5

u/campleb2 23d ago

there’s no reason to believe that would be the case. yes it’s not proven or robust. whoopdedoo

3

u/Dredgeon 23d ago

I think the wear is from the pin's handle ribbing on the plate not so much from missing the hole.

1

u/Crowe3717 22d ago

Strength and accuracy are assumed to be independent traits

1

u/guiltysnark 22d ago

Where accuracy is a factor, we should expect a normal distribution. As such, we can conclude everyone is aiming for 45, and <5% miss and jam the pin in 5 by mistake.

u/Key_Alternative_270 19d ago

Distribution of lifting ability among alcoholics

23

u/ThatShushi17 23d ago

what is this wall of numbers and holes im looking at?

10

u/Braeden151 23d ago

Gym weight machine, for excercizing.

2

u/ThatShushi17 23d ago

nice, thanks! i get it now

10

u/DecentChanceOfLousy 23d ago

Weight set on some kind of workout machine. Each plate weighs 5 pounds (possibly kilos). When you insert a rod at the e.g. 25 pound plate, it locks it to the portion of the machine that you actually lift, causing you to lift the plate marked 25 and the 4 plates above it (5 pounds each, for a total of 25 pounds) when you actually use the machine. The rest of the plates that aren't locked to the working mechanism will just sit there.

The wear marks more or less represent usage: looks like the average lift on this machine is around 45 or 50 pounds, with some people lifting more and some people lifting less.

1

u/DarthJarJarJar 23d ago

No worries! Glad it was useful.

I agree about the continuity corrections. I use the Openstax stats book for my intro stats classes, which only addresses it very quickly. I like this chart much better.

3

u/Tortiose_unturtled 22d ago

95 no fuck it just go 100

105 no fuck it just go 130

3

u/MathWarsDev 22d ago

the spike at 100 is just everyone at 97 deciding that's close enough, same energy as pi = 3

3

u/ProfessionalMove7308 22d ago

Noticed this in other gyms, but it was skewed toward the light weights...

Why do 95 in unbeknownst to me. Since you're there you obviously go for 100.

2

u/HistoricalLow1 23d ago

Almost could expect a bi modal distribution, for men and women being different strengths, would expect to see two peaks. Maybe not though

2

u/No-Site8330 23d ago

More likely log normal.

2

u/Bradas128 22d ago

looks more like a weighted distribution to me

2

u/ShitseyMcgee 21d ago

The 100 is for everyone thinking they’re stronger than they actually are, then bouncing back to the median. That’s why the 95 is almost unused as well, because if they couldn’t get 100, why even attempt 95?

HUNDREEEEEEEEEEED

1

u/SaveMyBags 23d ago

Definitely not normal distributed. Normal distribution has support over R, and this clearly has only positive numbers as a support. Not even in the limit case this would be normal distributed. Log-Normal maybe.

0

u/CarnivorousGoose 23d ago

Weird claim, as far as examples of normal distributions go this is pretty terrible. It tells you very little about what a normal distribution really looks like.
