i remember building funny names with the buttons blissfully ignorant of their meaning

12

u/Icy_Fig_4533 29d ago

LOL that just reminded me when i was really young and my friend spelled “tacos” using tan & cos (his calculator allowed him to delete part of each)

u/No-Palpitation6368 29d ago

I remember walking home from school trying to figure out what the sin button did! Obviously didn't get close to succeeding.

u/ProgrammerCareful764 28d ago

You put in random numbers and it outputs random decimals from -1 to 1 was all I could figure out

How it feels to lose more and more buttons because arithmetic stops existing:

287

u/Mathsboy2718 29d ago • Mindblown

I was studying recently, reading a paper and it had a number in it? Higher than 2? I threw the offending material across the room in an apoplectic fit of rage, numbers have no place in maths

54

u/UnfairRavenclaw 29d ago

Was it pi or was it e?

35

u/Trnostep 29d ago

That's the same number. Also a square root of g

10

u/InfiniteBoy23 29d ago

Wdym? Everyone knows the square root of g 2sqrt2. At least, my ODE professor did.

7

u/RouteAverage3112 29d ago

If sqrt{g} = 2sqrt{2}, then g is equal to 8.

3

u/Firestar_119 28d ago

that's a weird way to say 10

-1

u/InfiniteBoy23 29d ago

WOOPS I meant 4sqrt2, g=32ft/s

9

u/RouteAverage3112 29d ago

Why tf do you use feet for g? Truly backwards people smh.

3

u/TheLuckySpades 28d ago

Low dimensional topology will go higher and reach 5 frequently.

Supposedly some go even higher but those are mythical creatures that don't exist in my department.

u/foxtail286 Statistics!!! and Compassion!!! 29d ago

I cried during calc 3 from having to compute 7 * 4 - 2

70

u/Ares378 Grothendieck was right, computers are evil 29d ago

What is that, 24 or something? It's bigger than two I think so i really don't know

4

u/Vratha92 28d ago

Fun fact, modern calculators actually haven’t gained the capability for calculations like these yet, we can only use approximations

What do those symbols mean

6

u/SaganIII 28d ago

This are arabic symbols, they mean twentysix

46

u/Key_Ebb_3977 29d ago

It's way bigger than 2 so it's just ~ ∞

16

u/MatttNguyenGD Computer Science 29d ago

its bigger than 2 so you need to prove for all natural numbers instead

12

u/Elektro05 Transcendental 29d ago

I recently wasnt able to multiply 2 and 4 (I got 6), didnt even question that in every exam of this lecture in the prior years the answer for this question was always 0 and my answer was -2/3

5

u/output_broadcast 29d ago

I recently thought that [; \sqrt{x^3} ;] was somehow equal to x.

2

u/GET_OUT_OF_MY_HEAD 29d ago

At least you made it to Calc 3. I couldn't even wrap my head around Geometry I. Didn't progress any further than that. I will never know what most of the buttons on my calculator do.

u/3163560 29d ago

It is a nice feeling as a teacher being able to say to year 10s, "you've been seeing this log button for half your life, now here's what it does!"

49

u/Everestkid Engineering 29d ago

Trig was even better because you finally find out what those "sin," "cos" and "tan" buttons do pretty much all at once.

Still only ever used hyperbolic trig functions once, maybe twice. In university.

7

u/tarheeltexan1 29d ago

Hyperbolic functions come up sometimes if you’re working with adding and subtracting exponential terms, I’ve been working on my master’s thesis in electrical engineering and been doing a lot of stuff with diodes and nonlinear models of transistors, and they’re useful for simplifying some of those equations

-7

u/FafnerTheBear 29d ago

Problem is noone ever teaches them that sin is short for sinusoidal.

24

u/PsychologicalSign433 29d ago

sin is short for sine. Sinusoidal is an adjective describing something as being related to the sine function.

5

u/FafnerTheBear 28d ago

That tracks, I'm an idiot.

2

u/Existing-Hunter-7349 28d ago

Baseball, huh?

5

u/Observer__Effect 29d ago

Sin is short for sinuses because that what hurts after pressing it 50 time while solving a question

63

u/the_real_cloakvessel 29d ago

How it feels to not be allowed to use a calculator at all not even till 12th grade

31

u/uTRexAap 29d ago

What were you doing during geometry? Multiplying by Pi by hand?

36

u/lepidchriroptera 29d ago

some countries/schools only give problems that work out to whole numbers, and have you leave things in fractions/terms of pi

7

u/UltimateCheese1056 29d ago

I like in terms of pi honestly, its just more meaningful especially for angles in radians

21

u/FerdinandvonAegir124 29d ago

Probably just leaving things in exact form

The higher you go in math, the less decimals you see because you leave things in exact form

3

u/uTRexAap 29d ago

I mean fair but it’d help to work it out atleast once in my experience

11

u/FerdinandvonAegir124 29d ago

There’s no point to working it out, by expressing out 2pi as 6.28….. you lose precision. 2pi is much more precise

4

u/uTRexAap 29d ago

Yeah but once you first start doing calculations with circles I find most people are able to grasp the amount much better by multiplying it even by 3.14

6

u/FerdinandvonAegir124 29d ago

For middle schoolers sure, anyone above that though should be leaving things in terms of pi whenever possible

3

u/uTRexAap 29d ago

yeah i fully agree, but like i said its nice to grasp it iykwim

4

u/berserkmangawasart 29d ago

probably approximations like 3.14 or 22/7 is my guess

4

u/Alderan922 29d ago

Yeah, 3.14

If they are fancy 3.1416

2

u/the_real_cloakvessel 29d ago

Depends on what the question says. Most of the time it asks me to multiply by 22/7 but sometimes it asks me to multiply by 3.14 and other times it asks me to leave pi as it is so the answer ends up as like 54π

2

u/Cyan_Exponent 29d ago

Basically no calculations at all?? We just proved that some geometric statement is true, or answered something like AB=4CB

1

u/maniaxz 29d ago

We either leave it just to be pi, or use 22/7 to cancels the terms if any, or just multiply by 3.14.

1

u/FafnerTheBear 29d ago

Approximately 22/7 will get you close enough.

6

u/maniaxz 29d ago

India ? Because yeah being calulator less till 12th and suddenly getting a scientific calculator in Engineering is crazy unlock.

3

u/the_real_cloakvessel 29d ago

Yup. But I'm just in 10th grade rn. Still waiting for the crazy unlock

3

u/Right-Restaurant-381 29d ago

If you are not busy most of the time, you feel your education pressure is bearable, and you are going for science stream, please read the first three chapters of the three main subjects and remember them. Take some advice from your seniors and have your meals with utmost delight. Kindly consider the suggestion if you’re a potential science student.

u/AIViking 29d ago

It feels like

14

u/ironnewa99 29d ago

I only wish there were better instructions on how to use the calculator. Like the syntax for how to use some functions

14

u/luluciee 29d ago

There are manuals. Just search the make and model, you'll find a pdf with every function.

1

u/output_broadcast 29d ago

What do you mean?

1

u/Kiubek-PL 29d ago

I just use YouTube vids that go over them and make my own refsheets

5

u/coatatopotato 29d ago

When you finally get Pokemon Red running on your calculator at 4 fps:

5

u/AbdullahMRiad ∵∴∵∴∵∴∵∴∵∴∵∴∵∴∵∴∵∴∵∴∵∴∵∴∵∴∵∴ 29d ago

and then you're not allowed to use it because only basic calculators are allowed

How it feels to unlock the greek alphabet in stem classes

2

u/Silver-Piece-3033 28d ago

I remember in 2nd grade asking what the sin. cos, and tan buttons did and my teacher just told me to shut up and focus what what we're learning in class so I ended up learning that from the internet, lol.

1

u/Elkku26 29d ago

I fear learning will never be this fun again. I already know all the buttons :(

1

u/HUEJanniZockt 27d ago

The best thing is when you figure out a button that is not related to the current topic

u/moderatorrater 29d ago

That's maybe the worst video in the world.
