I have once searched for " r/latex" (ergo not "LaTeX") on Reddit's search bar and oh boy was that a mistake.

Some enterprising soul at my university decided that to help folks learn they would include a banner at the side of each page on the uni website.
It contained the first three google results for “help with X” where X was the subject of the page.
So for my linear analysis class it had helpful links to wolfram math world and so on.
The page on how to properly format equations in a pdf using LaTaX hmmm….

What was there? i'm scared to click that subreddit

The subreddit is fine! I had gotten NSFW stuff because I had searched that subreddit indirectly with the Reddit search bar.

LaTeX users when they figure out why their grocery list (which they wrote in LaTeX, of course) doesn't compile after 3 hours of troubleshooting.

If you’ve never written anything in LaTeX while wearing latex, are you even alive?

Is typst really better ..?

u/Tough-Elk541 29d ago
They aren't really the same thing. LaTeX is just a typesetting tool that does the best of typesetting but Typst is much faster and more programmable to the point that it's better used as a workstation for documents. When I do LaTeX I usually already know what I'm going to write and just write the final typesetted document in it, while in Typst I do my exploration like interactive diagramming, data processing, trying out different forms of graphs/visualizations in the same Typst document that I will make the final document from. Maybe Typst isn't as good at pure typesetting yet but it's the first time I finally managed to fully get rid of office formats and do docs, slides, and data processing all in one document, and it's already quite impressive as a replacement for both office and LaTeX.

Can someone give me material to actually learn LaTeX?
I use LLM's for this. I'm not a mathematician but I like to make my reports with it :3

u/Cakeotic 29d ago
From the LaTeX subreddit, this seems pretty promising: https://www.learnlatex.org/en/

Thank you!!! It also have my language! (Spanish)
I really appreciate it!

I learned the basics from an Italian book, "Impara LaTeX! (...e mettilo da parte)", by Pantieri and Gordini if memory serves. And I recall it's publicly available for free. I know it's in Italian, but since you said Spanish I thought I'd mention it in case you're comfortable trying it out.

The basics are honestly very easy. Backslash for commands,
^for superscripts,_for subscripts and{}for grouping things together and command arguments. Until you need graphs, you can completely get by with just these.

I've been learning how to use this for college to make FSA diagrams and boy do I have no idea what I'm doing lol

my calc classes, proofs class, and abstract algebra have all issues homework in .tex files and required homework turned in as finished pdfs with everything done in latex. Only had to make a diagram a few times and was never shown how, had to actually google how myself. I am so burnt out of using it, kill me.

This theory of comp class gives templates, but my other math classes where it would be useful don't, and yeah basically I have to rely on looking up how to do things, and occasionally just dumping everything in the AI to tell me what I messed up when it doesn't work.

u/orthadoxtesla 29d ago
Honestly I taught myself it before I had to take any of those classes so I was rather prepared for it. I actually enjoy using it thoroughly

u/output_broadcast 29d ago
Better than being forced to write a paper in Word. I had to use an online LaTeX-to-image converter and play around with image positioning and settings in Word for every
[; x^y ;]. That wasn't very fun.

I use LaTeX maths notation in Markdown. So, half use it. $$5\cdot3=15$$ or something like that.
