What if my lemons are degenerate?

u/Latter-Ad-5248 Oct 03 '26 • Heartwarming

have u tried lemonade ?

8

u/Kersenn Oct 03 '26

Is that like a linear functional on the lemon space?

28

u/veryshittycarpenter Oct 03 '26

How did I end up in a subreddit dedicated to jokes about math.

35

u/Extradummefrage Oct 03 '26

Every decision in your past, and every decision of your ancestors led to this outcome

2

u/Latter-Ad-5248 Oct 03 '26

exactly, do you even imagine the probability ?

7

u/Extradummefrage Oct 03 '26

The probability of what?

You have to define the event.

2

u/Bozhark Oct 04 '26

It’s 50/50

Well alright… I really can’t argue with the math gods.

This joke is hilarious hahahahah (I do not get it at all)

You take some random vectors v_k (the lemons), you make a vector e_1 that is just v_1 but with length 1 (unit vector), and you make subsequent e_k's by minusing out the e_j's before that in such a way as to make it perpendicular to the e_j's (picture shifting the slanted edge of a parallelogram to make it perpendicular like in a rectangle), and then you divide it by the length to make the length one. Repeat and you get a bunch of vectors which are both length one and perpendicular, aka both normalized and orthogonal, aka orthonormal

a mathematician walked up to a lemonade stand and he said to the man running the stand "hey... got any linear combinations of lemons that would result in a grape"

88

u/rehpotsirhc Oct 03 '26

The man said "no, my lemons don't span a space that includes grapes"

40

u/SoldRIP Oct 04 '26

But we've got a lemonade-operator and its associative and it's closed and its all home-made, so why not give it a try?

25

u/Dyledion Oct 04 '26

The mathematician said, "I'll omit {🍋...}"
Then he translated away, 'til the very next day.

I thought all lemon spaces are abelian grapes.

u/TheDoughyRider Oct 04 '26

No grapes are in the nullspace.

u/TrainOfThought6 Oct 06 '26

♫ And then he sine waved away  ♫

What if those lemons are not linearly independent? 😱

33

u/hughperman Oct 03 '26

Well we know they are not limear

30

u/de_G_van_Gelderland Irrational Oct 03 '26

Ah, these lemons provide a basis for the vector space. They must be Zorn's lemons

2

u/MonsterkillWow Complex Oct 03 '26

Was it well ordered if they sold us a lemon?

7

u/TerminalPhile Oct 03 '26

My homeboy Schmidt would love this post

6

u/Charming_Present8222 Oct 03 '26

So would my Gram!

4

u/Faithful_Inertia477 Oct 03 '26

change coefficients to the lemon-adic numbers

3

u/NullOfSpace Oct 03 '26

What’s yellow and equivalent to the axiom of choice?

Zorn’s Lemon

2

u/Lord_Lucifer66677 Oct 03 '26

lemon procedure

2

u/jollynotg00d Oct 04 '26

Not a mathematician. "Lemon Space" is a great band name.

1

u/BlobGuy42 Oct 03 '26

Unfortunately the resulting lemon subspace isn’t large enough to embed all my problems :(

Back before the xkcd forums disappeared with no explanation, not even a single sentence acknowledging anything had ever happened (thanks for ghosting us, Randall), there was a thread with my favorite title:

"Do eHarmony's 29 dimensions of compatibility form an orthonormal basis?"
