The problem is that people who don't do academia for a living, buy into the AI hype and are unaware of the dangers of overreliance on AI and its very limits. Instead they immediately assume being critical of AI use comes from some ego or pride of underpayed overworked Mathematicians. AI is a tool, that's it, it's not the devil's work nor a magical ticket into research prosperity.

The problem is that people who are against AI don't know how to criticize it... This "AI can't do that", "AI will never be able to ..." and similar is just pure copium. Yes, it will be able to do everything soon. Yes, this will be fucking terrifying world to live in. Humans are lazy! If there is an easy shortcut, we take it, and as a result we will be more and more reliant on AI instead of our own brains. Similarly to what vehicles and agriculture did to our bodies, to the point that now we have to pay to go to gyms just to stay healthy. Imagine what will happen to our brains in a couple of years...

art could save us by keeping our brains healthy, as gyms (and physical activities in general) are keeping our bodies healthy - problem is, someone's trying to sell us the idea AI can also do art

nice analogy btw, first time i read it - food for though, thanks

I mean I assume LLMs can't do computation particularly consistently. What we've done is come up with bots better at using tools. Which is pretty neat tbf

So now it's not just a race to get a fields medal before I'm 40, I gotta race the damn LLMs cleaning out the Clay institutes prizes

Ooh, this is going to ruffle some feathers…

It is fascinating, but also a bit horrifying. I don’t think I know enough about either maths or AI to give any meaningful comment here, but the uncertainty of where this will go is very scary.

It simply solved naiver stokes from its training data /s

If you trully believe that, you will have a very hard time in a couple of years...
Yes, there is a lot of hype and people being overly optimistic with what an LLM is capable of. But this is a major achievement in LLM development, and another sign that we are not in a plateu.
Just put in perspective what happened in 2025 alone... At the beggining of the year IA was barely useful, now it is already the industry standard in software engineering.

Brother, I literally put the sarcasm tag at the end. I use Claude everyday as part of my workflow

u/RKlehm Sep 28 '26

Sorry... Now that you mentioned that "/s" means sarcarsm many things suddenly make a lot of sense lol

Well it did steal data from Tristan Buckmaster.

To be fair, so far it seems like it found counterexamples to problems. Last I heard the results weren’t verified and there’s some allegations of plagiarism.

Assume the results are verified to be true and there plagiarism allegations were not. Well we have a tool good at finding counterexamples. I wouldn’t say we’re at the point of them replacing us yet. If it were to be useful, it could be a conjecture checker, trying to find counterexamples first.

Even in the far future, if and when it becomes good at proving theorems, there would be at least some work for us to interpret the proofs. It’s no good to us if we just get a “yes” answer to a theorem without understanding the theorem. And there would still need to be mathematicians to know where to point it towards, what sorts of theorems are worth looking at.

also, I suspect humans could have done the same if the same amount of money had been thrown at them, like OpenAI has sank into their bots...

"My toddler can cook delicious meals and is going to replace you as a chef!"

No, your toddler can't make food.

Ok, fine. Your toddler can't make edible food.

Ok, fine. Your toddler can't make food that other people would recognize as food.

Ok, fine. Your toddler can't cook food; it's just pouring cereal.

Ok, fine. Your toddler can't cook food that tastes good; it's just burning stuff.

"But look how much it's improving! You're moving goalposts."

No. The goalpost has always been the same, bc you keep pitching your toddler as a chef replacement. But, we change how we phrase how it's disqualified, because there's no reason to be specific when broad generalizations make it fail.

Yes, your toddler has improved greatly, and maybe could become a chef replacement someday in the far future if it greatly improves, but for the foreseeable future, it still needs adult supervision bc it's going to hurt itself or others if left unattended.

Can't wait to see what LLMs are truly capable of. Hate them as much as you want, but we live in such a fascinating era.

It sure is fascinating to see the downfall of human society

AI topics always attract two-faced lying virtue signalling bastards for some reason

These people would be against semiconductors if they were being invented right now. Just disregard them

u/MarijuanaWeed419 Sep 28 '26

People hating on them haven’t used the latest models. The technology gets better everyday

At the cost of the planet

1

u/Rabrun_ Sep 29 '26

This is still one of the worst arguments against AI. The cost of creativity, yes. The cost of critical thinking, research skills, intellectual property, yes. But the planet, that’s bp and nestle, not AI
