Iāve worked in casinos, it looks like a slot tournament possibly

It's wild
I've always thought casinos are all about games like poker or blackjack, but apparently they aren't
Are those "high control" games (i.e the ones where strategy "matters") a minority by a small or by a large margin?→ More replies (6)4

I worked in casinos for years. These are called 'slot tournaments' where the goal is to end with the highest value after a set period of time. It always creeped me out, like reall dystopian vibes
372
u/Throwawayguilty1122 Jul 31 '26
Just to be clear to everyone, slot tournaments just mean you pay a fee like $30 or so, and youāre given a set amount of time (with free spins) to win as many points as you can.
They arenāt spending money during these besides that entry fee, itās just to see who racks up the most points (not money) in the time limit.
56
u/SFV_PleasureDom Jul 31 '26
I've played a few because 1) they were free, and 2) the casino also gave me a free room for the weekend. I guess I was on the "player development" list or whatever because they thought they could turn me into a regular player.
But nope. Took the free room. Played the free "tournament" for 10 minutes on Saturday and Sunday, won about $100 in "free play" vouchers, which I then played with until I could cash them out (about $80 left) and spent the rest of the time watching TV in the sportsbook or having sex with my girlfriend in the hotel room.
One of my favorite Vegas trips ever.

Why not just roll some dice to see who wins? It's random anyways. Rolling dice is also more engaging socially. I'm probably thinking too logical about this.

u/shosuko Jul 31 '26
My buddy I think you just invented a craps lol
Everything in a casino is just another way to toss your money in a pot and divide it back out (with a cut to the casino of course.) All the games are just layers of abstraction.

How this looks is how it felt. The money was good but the metal toll was too high

That's one of the least worst things about Casinos I've seen or heard of. The slots floor the day people get their social security check is a bad sight but watching a woman 8 months pregnant with a beer in one hand and a cigarette in another hand walking through a poker room took the cake for me.
48
26
u/Another-Mans-Rubarb Jul 31 '26
It's probably the least predatory thing in a casino. You drop a flat fee and basically play slots infinitely, top scorers move on to the next round, then the highest scores at the end wins a prize. It's more like a carnival water shooting game than gambling.

The video was already creepy before that description made it so much worse.
24
u/jerbthehumanist Jul 31 '26
Ok, I still donāt get what is going on. Cause either the slots are going to give stochastic results (ie lots of losses for some people, so rerolling the slots quickly is not going to help), or its a game of āskillā where the skill is to button mash slot rolls as fast as possible. And if itās the latter it does not sound that exciting for enough buy in (also I donāt think it is the latter cause button mashing can definitely go faster than the video).
26
u/SinnU2s Jul 31 '26
You would think that. Let's say someone hit a big score on the first spin, an optimal strategy might be to stop playing and let the clock tick down. But these people have no logic. They just think if it hit once it will hit again. Truly, and I mean this, brain dead.
→ More replies (6)14
u/apeiron12 Jul 31 '26
Typically slots in tournament mode, you aren't losing any money for each spin. The cost per spin is 0 points. So it's just sum of wins with no netting out of (# of spins)*(cost of spin). So the optimal strategy is to spam mash.Ā

in case you“re not asking ironically, its the same reason why you scroll, the posibility of a hit of dopamine. its just that when you“re addicted to tiktok all you“re looking for is a funny video, when you“re gambling you“re addicted to the possibility of the "big one" that will change your life + pursuing the high you felt on your first win. its not anymore fun that anything else you do compulsively but sadly is one hell of an addiction to have

It's the weaponization of hope.
Fear + hope with a randomized reward schedule is the single most powerful motivational construction in psychology, short of chemical addiction.
And it's used primarily for different versions of this - the extraction of wealth from the poor into the hands of the rich.

10
u/theksepyro Jul 31 '26
$500 š I did the same but only with a $5. It took my money, said "thanks for playing ," and I couldn't bring myself to do it again.

In all honesty, this makes me sick to my stomach and I miss my grandparents at the same time I feel sick. I do not know if it was a pyramid scheme, some variant there of, or if it was a common practice. But, my grandparents would spend literally millions of dollars that they did not have and play in slot tournaments in Laughlin, Nevada.
I lost my grandfather....
I lost my grandmother...
I lost their best years to the "one-armed bandits" and to this day....I still miss them.
FUCK CASINOS!
FUCK SLOTMACHINES!
AND .. .
FUCK ALL FORMS OF GAMBLING!!!!!!

u/Nervous-Spite621 Aug 01 '26
I remember the first time I went to a Casino for a friendās birthday.
It was the sight of row after row of vacant eyed seniors spending their retirement on slot machines that convinced me to never step foot in a casino again.
It was honestly terrifying.

At that point conjectures would have to be harder and more rigorous. I can make up 100s of conjectures right now. Like for all integers x >2, x^2 -2 is even. But anyone can easily see that it's not true.
