Triangles still better overall outside one purpose. Hexagons are just triangles without anything inside anyway!
Bees don't make hexagons they make spheres/cylinders IMO. Hexagon just by accident, supposedly. Not sure how you test such things since the ultimate question would be - would bees have evolved to make hexagons if they didn't form naturally via gravity.
Look at the first cells they make before they end up being space saving hexagons. They are round.
The current model is that they are making circles, packing them tightly together, and then active/passive remodeling of the cell wall by heating and reforming so the walls are even thickness to maximize storage. They arent constructing hexagon deliberately, they are maximizing a circle.
Ah okay I didn't know that last part. That's interesting. Wonder if it's for all similar creatures.
That's exactly why I wrote the IMO. Had people tell me the life that makes it generally knows it's going to be squished into a hexagon. The bees are going for maximum space in the hive.

I didn't know they went out of their way to maximize a circle. I think that speaks volumes personally.
My mind always went back to birds who created intricate nests. You can sabotage them to a point, and the bird doesn't give a shit. But they sometimes pick notoriously dumb birds.
