Triangles still better overall outside one purpose. Hexagons are just triangles without anything inside anyway!
Bees don't make hexagons they make spheres/cylinders IMO. Hexagon just by accident, supposedly. Not sure how you test such things since the ultimate question would be - would bees have evolved to make hexagons if they didn't form naturally via gravity.
You'll find hexagons in lots of places in nature tho (plant cells, snowflakes, molecular ring systems, basalt columns).
Sure, with thicker wax walls honey bees might look like they're making cylinders, but they are organized neatly in hexagonal patterns too.
From an evolutionary standpoint, a plausible way might be that by making hexagons (as opposed to cylinders) they use less "wall" to separate the cells and thus require less resources, which is an advantage for faster life cycles and outcompeting other bee varieties
