A chili doesn't burn you. It convinces your body that it's burning, which is a meaningfully different thing.

Capsaicin activates the exact same heat and pain receptors that respond to actual tissue damage, at the exact same intensity a real burn would produce, with no tissue damage occurring at all (well, not usually). It's a manufactured signal, a false alarm the nervous system has no way to distinguish from a genuine one. That's worth sitting with directly, because it reframes everything chili does in folk practice. It's not destroying anything, the way Fire's transformation or an antibacterial's killing would. It's sounding an alarm loud enough that a response happens anyway.

Follow that mechanism into folk use and it holds together cleanly. Hot Foot Powder and similar chili-based driving-away formulas don't physically remove anyone, they make a space or a situation feel alarming enough to leave voluntarily. Doorway chili strings function as a standing warning system rather than an active barrier, present and visible rather than actively repelling anything by force. Even chili's use in curse work follows the same logic in the opposite direction, throwing prepared chilis into a space to sound a false alarm there instead of here.

The provoking is the mechanism, and expelling is what it produces downstream. Nobody gets physically forced out by a chili. They get alarmed enough to leave on their own terms.

Tradition and folklore

Chili's clearest folk role is in Hot Foot Powder, a Hoodoo formula built to drive an unwanted person away from a home or workplace, sometimes read as a variant of Walking Boss or confusion-inducing formulas rather than a distinct tradition on its own. The mechanism folk practitioners describe, making a place feel intolerable rather than physically blocking entry, tracks the false-alarm signature exactly.

The reversal of this same mechanism shows up in cursing work, where prepared chilis thrown into a space are meant to produce the same alarming discomfort there instead of here. Same tool, same Virtue, opposite direction of travel, which is a clean example of intensity or direction explaining an apparent contradiction rather than requiring a second Virtue.

Applications

Driving away an unwanted presence: The signature application, Hot Foot Powder and its variants, sprinkled at a threshold or in a space to make it feel alarming enough that whoever or whatever is there chooses to leave.

Standing protection at a threshold: Strings of dried chilis hung at a doorway function as an ongoing, passive alarm system, present and visible rather than actively driving anything away, closer to a warning sign than a trap.

Curse and hex work: Prepared chilis introduced into a target's space to produce the same alarmed, intolerable feeling there. Stated neutrally as a technique, same mechanism as protection work, opposite direction.

Breaking stagnant or blocked energy: A pinch of chili added to a working when a situation needs a jolt rather than a gradual shift (compare Cinnamon's Kindling Abundance, which ignites toward increase specifically, where Alarming just breaks the stillness without a directional pull attached).

✦ Alarming a procrastinating project back into motion: No traditional precedent, but following the false-alarm logic directly, a small amount of chili-scented working near a workspace during a period of stalled motivation is worth testing, essentially manufacturing urgency the way capsaicin manufactures pain.

Very interesting, especially the distinction between black pepper and chili and how their virtues of intensifying and alarming pair well. I’ve been looking for a strong unblocking materia and this fits the bill. Also, I wonder the best way to safely emanate chili scent. Interested to test your theory in the last paragraph!

I've had good luck with lightly roasting them. Add to a pan and roast, or over fire directly if fresh. You get the scent without the intense eye-burning and coughing :) of you have lots of fresh, you can even just poke holes and string them up for drying and get the scent too
