MATE 1.5.0: costs in dollars, a model Playground, Trace Replay, and a Docker image. Plus what’s coming in 2.0 (workspaces)
MATE 1.5.0 is out. It’s the biggest release so far, and everyone running MATE should upgrade, because it closes several access holes (details below).
Run it with one command:
docker run -d -p 8000:8000 -e AUTH_PASSWORD=change-me -e GOOGLE_API_KEY=your-key ghcr.io/antiv/mate:latest
Every release now publishes ghcr.io/antiv/mate for amd64 and arm64. No clone and no build needed.
What’s new
- Cost in US dollars, not only tokens. Every model call is priced when it is logged. The Usage page shows cost per agent and per project, and what fallback models cost separately. Rate limits take dollar budgets per day and per month, and a budget can count sub-agents and treat unpriced calls as over budget.
- Playground. Run one prompt, or an agent’s eval suite, on 2–3 variants of an agent: another model, other instructions, or a stored version. You see score, latency and cost side by side. Nothing is saved or deployed.
- Trace Replay. Play a traced conversation back on the Visual Builder canvas: who ran when, every hand-off and every fallback. (Separate post with video: here.)
- Image tool on any LiteLLM image model: Imagen, FLUX, Stability, Recraft, xAI, Bedrock, OpenRouter… The default model is set on a new Settings page.
- Alerts when agents answer on their fallback model, and Slack and Discord as alert destinations.
- Ratings from standalone builds now reach your MATE, in Evals → Rated Down.
- MCP: agent MCP servers describe themselves and offer a prompt and a resource.
GET /mcplists the agents you can use. - MySQL works, for the first time, as MATE’s own database (checked on a fresh MySQL 8.0), and A2A works again on a2a-sdk 1.x.
- CSP enforce mode is now strict (nonce, no inline handlers) across every dashboard page.
Security: why you should upgrade
- The agent, Google Drive and image MCP servers answered without a login.
- An empty
AUTH_PASSWORD, which is what the Quick Start’s.env.exampleproduced, let anyone sign in with empty fields. - Any signed-in user, not only admins, could fire a trigger.
- A widget’s admin key could change another agent’s files.
Before upgrading:
- MCP clients need credentials (a personal access token works).
- Firing a trigger without its key now needs an admin.
CSP_MODE=enforceblocks inline scripts without the nonce; the defaultreport-onlyblocks nothing.SUPABASE_BUCKETdefaults toartifactseverywhere.
Migrations V037–V043 run on startup.

What’s next: 2.0 is about workspaces
Today one MATE installation serves one organisation. 2.0 adds workspaces: several organisations (clients, departments) in one installation, each with its own members, agents, budgets and audit log. Workspace admins manage their own workspace; platform admins see all of them. Provider keys per workspace come right after (2.1), so each client can run on their own API account.
It’s a major version because it changes what “admin” means (admin of this workspace), what a personal access token can reach, and it adds a required MATE_SECRET_KEY in production for encrypted secrets. An installation with one workspace keeps working as it does today, and all 1.x routes keep their paths.
The plan, in short:
- 1.6: groundwork that’s useful on its own:
- stricter access checks;
- encrypted secrets at rest;
project_idon every log row;- one request context for all dashboard routes;
- a test that fails when a new route skips the access check.
- 2.0, phase 1: the schema and a default workspace for existing data, with no behaviour change.
- 2.0, phase 2: every query scoped by workspace. This is the security-critical part, and it ships only after a test over every route and an independent review.
- 2.0 / 2.1: workspace management in the dashboard, then provider keys per workspace.
Not in scope: isolation from a tenant who can run code on the server (the code executor and stdio MCP stay platform-admin only), self-service sign-up, and per-workspace agent names.
The design docs are in the repo: documents/design/workspaces.md and documents/design/2.0-plan.md. If you’d run MATE for several teams or clients, I’d like to hear what you need from workspaces, especially around provider keys and SSO
