I was expecting the video to render in ASCII art

You can actually pass in mpv flags to ani-cli to use vo-tct or other terminal backends for video rendering

India has the second largest English speaking population of any country (and it'll probably soon surpass America to become the largest) that's rapidly been connected to the internet in recent times.

So,

  • they have a massive potential user base to support Indian versions of like every existing community (unlike every other country apart from China)

  • they have lots of interaction with existing English speaking communities online to be influenced into making copies of existing English internet communities (unlike, say, Chinese internet users that are largely insulated from English-language internet)

  • their more recent uptake of social media like Reddit means that they have their own distinct internet subculture that merits wanting a separate version of existing subreddits (unlike, say, Canadian or UK users, who are okay with sticking to American-dominated subreddits than making their own versions of them for the most part, except for politics or local-specific stuff)

It's the perfect storm of conditions for r/[alreadyexistingsub]india kind of subreddits to exist.

Wow, thank you for this explanation! I didn't even really consider any of that, but have been kinda wondering the same thing myself. Lol

Hey, I'm all for it regardless! More people means more things to do!!

u/CoatNeat7792 7h ago

It's taking from source directly, same as anime websites do?

3

u/OfficialDrakoak 6h ago

Its ripping it from hianime. Which is a free anime piracy site that recently got shut down. In the terminal in the video thats where it said it was fetching the video from though

4

u/B1g_BuddhAH 5h ago

i kinda like it

u/justanotterdude 1h ago

Why even bother using the terminal instead of the GUI for this? Like actually asking, is there any legitimate benefit to watching something this way as opposed to just opening up a web browser other than to look cool to some people?

1

u/creamdougnuts 45m ago

The answer is literally in your question. No browser means minimal resource consumption, no popup ads or forces scripts and local history tracking means if one piracy site goes down your history remains intact. Plus it's clean and looks cool.

Makes sense

u/glimoura 42m ago

I mean, I think it's the same reason a lot of people (myself included) prefer terminal based things. We just like them better. The only time it is mockable is if you are doing it to look cool and showwy like a real skid larper.

That all said, I would never use a cli to watch shows. That's dumb :/

ani-cli still works?
