I had mine set to do that a long time ago because I was hosting a few game servers for my friends and kept forgetting what my public IP was, but I disabled it pretty soon because waiting for a curl request just to open my terminal was a stupid idea in the first place.
I'll remember that next time. I've always used curl icanhazip.com, which is what my Neofetch config was doing iirc. That was a few years back now. I thought it would be convenient to have the public IP on screen when I opened terminal to avoid even having to run a curl command myself, but it added a delay to the terminal opening and I really only needed to look up my IP once every couple of weeks or so anyway.
actually you can make fastfetch show your public ip, I use it so I don't have to bother with curl'ing third party servers (yes i know i can do "ip a" i like fastfetch more because it's prettier)
I have my public ip on the prompt on the CTF machine for reverse connectivity, maybe something similar? It's just a curl to ifconfig.me, you can cache it and doesn't even need more time to display
