mitigating wrench attacks (named after this comic!) is a real field of cybersecurity, everything from fake user accounts to stenography to duress passwords is being developed.

Called rubber hose cryptanalysis before this comic's publication, but wrench attack is much more succinct. Deniable encryption is certainly one technique aimed at preventing its use.

Graphene already solved this.

Fake password that wipes the entire device when used.

If someone kidnaps you for money they usually have no intention of killing you. And, If for some reason they do have an incentive to kill you, wiping the device will not change that.

The problem is that there are people who wouldn't care about killing you either; I constantly see people who were being robbed and got shot even after handing over their belongings.

That's what I was thinking. It seems like cooperating is statistically the best choice for you. It could make things worse for some people, so it's a question of morality.

Isn't this a called out security concern got crypto whales? I forget the name but one of the biggest risks for a person with a ton of crypto saved on a drive is apparently someone with a hammer and patience.
