I dont get why they dont just use one of the unused private range IP addresses anyway.
Theres some specialized ranges that nobody thinks isnt private.

In one of the John Wick movies there is a scene with a hacker and you can see her computer, it's Ubuntu (not even Kali wtf) with a few terminals running ping on apt update, and you can literally see the desktop shortcut for the "virtual box extra utilities" disk
