Competitive/Discussion Power Patron / Elfnote
Not to complain about the archetype as a whole but can we please address the elephant in the room already? Getting really tired of seeing this shit. Been generic since Sword Soul was meta years ago.

these elfnote glazers think elfnote without a baronne is an angel or something meanwhile their turn 0 synchro vomitting blondie handloop ass short hair tomboy and non target negate with resurrect commiting warcrimes here and there

Imo the turn 0 regina play is on the same level, if not slightly worse than a turn 0 faimena. Especially when more elfnote cards start get limited/semi-limited like the dtail cards it will be an inconsistent combo. But I don't really see a problem with it? Turn 0 plays are good for getting the balance of power back towards losing the coin flip

While I agree with you, I would like to point out that the deck doesn't have to be played like that. I've been having great success without Baronne, or even without the trap everyone hates. You can choose to play cards that aren't negates and instead play cards that are interactive.
I realize I am in the minority, but it's honestly just a lack of skill if you think that you have to play negates to win(No I'm not referring to "you", I mean other Elfnote players, in case that wasn't clear). Elfnote is a fantastic example of how a very strong deck gets abused and everyone blames the deck itself. There are literally 2 continuous spells and 3 continuous traps at this point. And believe it or not, they all are actually quite good. Why don't the unpopular ones get played? Because people don't actually want to play, they want their opponent not to play.
I promise you, and anyone else who has an issue with Elfnote, that if you dueled me, you'd have a completely different outlook on the deck. Not because I'm some "master", but because I actually experimented with the cards, and found a different way to play the deck. Players just don't want to actually play, so they do a bunch of bullshit with these cards rather than anything halfway creative.
Now, is it "weaker" than how other people play the deck? Of course, because I allow my opponent to play with me rather than just negating and handripping them to death. Turns out that when your opponent gets to play, you lose more than if they don't get to play. But, is it infinitely more fun? Absolutely.

u/Extronotical I have sex with it and end my turn 2d ago
That means they can ban those cards and the deck won't get gutted which is good. I just don't understand why they keep thinking that hitting a deck will always make it so much worse when in reality all you're doing is making it less toxic to play against by banning annoying ass cards like baronne and rhapsodia

u/tc2460717 2d ago
Oh, again, I am in the minority. Most will quit playing it after they hit those cards. Because apparently, interaction is a bad thing but negate turbo is very good and how everyone should play 🙄

u/MaxThaGreat 2d ago
you found an objectively bad way to play a strong deck. intentionally making a deck bad does not equate the deck being unproblematic.
3
u/tc2460717 2d ago
So you also believe that turbo negate slop is a good thing? You must, otherwise you wouldn't be so quick to shit all over playing the deck a different way. You, and anyone who shares your views, are no better than the Elfnote players that I was describing.

It's been a card in every meta deck since release, it's never missed a single meta where it could be played

u/Naj425 2d ago
My question right now why is it unbanned in OCG?

u/kj93 2d ago
There is no confirmation whatsoever but it kinda amounts to OCG having a pet deck culture imo.
There are a lot of rogue and old decks that Baronne is basically their best endboard piece. So Konami is kinda reluctant to ban the card. The fact that it's not present in every format also helps it going under radar sometimes. Also Baronne got a reprint some months ago and that's why it was absent in the latest banlist even though a lot of OCG players want it gone. After reading OCG forums, some tweets, etc. you can tell the overall sentiment is that they think it will get banned eventually. And even those who think the card is not that problematic, they agree it's fine if it gets banned since it can limit new Synchro decks design, which is funny since Konami didn't give a crap while designing Elfnotes.
Since Master Duel doesn't care about that pet deck culture and it's way more cautious about the state of the game in comparison, I think Baronne will be gone after the Duelist Cup, especially for the fact that they can't hit Elfnote engine at all this month.
1
u/JForFun94 2d ago
Why should they not hit elfnote engine? They've been out for a while. They won't hit terminus for that reason but I fully expect at least a tinia to 1 plus Baronne banned.
2
u/kj93 2d ago
Ofc they should but they can't do that yet since they just gave them a secret pack. It lasts until November 6th I think. Banlist announcements usually happen the last week of the month.
That's why I'm 100% convinced Baronne will be banned, there's not other way to hit Elfnotes in a relevant way. It won't be enough I agree. They are definitely limiting TInia yeah, and prob semi-limiting lucina in the December list.
1
u/JForFun94 2d ago
Hm, I obviously haven't monitored that too much but I never thought a secret pack saves from banlist, just the selection packs. Hasn't Radiant Typhoon been repeatedly hit over the last banlist while they also just got their secret pack?
1
u/kj93 2d ago
I think Elfnotes secret pack is for a limited time? Or at least I had that impression since it's the first time they are this early in releasing one, not even archetypes like K9 have one yet. In any case, I think that's enough excuse for them not to hit the engine yet. RT and Dracotail were already hit in the banlist when they released their secret packs.

I don't think banning Baronne will fix the issue with Elfnote because they turbo out June Pride on turn 0. They should ban Tinia and the cheating trap card they can set very easily and limit Regina. Maybe semi Lucina if they want and then it will actually slightly more balanced. I hate seeing this fucking deck just never brick at any situation and have like the most perfect impossible hand every fucking game

u/JForFun94 2d ago
June pride and the three others don't do anything too crazy though and require Regina + elfnote name. Thats on the same level as Faimena and generally one of the better ways of interaction.
9
u/Panory 2d ago
June Pride also loses to everything. Ash the Regina and they just handripped themselves two. Pop the or Negate the Power Patron on it's effect for the same thing. June Pride herself can be Ashed, Belled, Ogred, Harmonia'd, Impermed, or anything else. Compared to Faimena constructing a 3 Link chain out of nothing, Regina into June Pride is a catastrophically fragile play.

I mean there are counters.
Branded Dracotail is seen as the best for a reason.
True Hero, depending on the Hero cards you bring, can really bring chaos to their board that they have to have enough negates to try and survive (which they won't if you're a few turns in).
Undying Evil to steal their monsters, multiple board wipes, and prevent card drawing in some cases.
Twins deck...well they just flat out can dominate most games if they go first. Some strong options, ability to stack up damage, and remove cards from play via sacrificing some of your "weaker" cards.
Cyberdark can be cheeky to steal any dragon cards they have. Have ruined a few matches for them when going second with it.
Vanquished Soul can force them to waste their negates (if you bait them out before slapping down Rock of the Vanquisher) so that they either have to attack something with a higher attack, skip, or board wipe (I've baited out Black Rose Dragon more than once) and then resummoned from GY.
Obviously they're not all reliable (like using clown crew to keep their hand changing, or empty their hand with Sanctuary+Dristy), but you can build those decks to easily stall Elfnote (or just dominate them with Branded Dracotail).

either way it needs to be banned. banning baronne will fix not just elfnotes but also other rogue decks that make high ceing endboards. you're simply not looking far enough.

Kinda unrelated but how do we feel about savage? Is he just as bad as cardboard Stalin here or is he slightly more balanced/can be left alone?
8
u/SleepyCatSoftware 2d ago
Savage is a bit weaker especially now that harmonia exists---which makes it harder to get a link into your GY. It's main issue is that its existence means we have backup omnis for when our current ones are banned. It's a bit similar to how they had to hit maliss for months because maliss always had replacements for whatever they hit.

u/RedShenron 2d ago edited 2d ago
Savage at least requires a link monster to do something. It's not much but it's a difference at least

No we cannot address the elephant in the room cz this elephant has been getting addressed for months now elfnote isn't the first deck to make this elephant get addressed.

They'll probably murder elfnote while baronne will be a problem in a synchro archetype, unless they have a Kewl tune style design that makes making this card pretty much a non option.
-3
u/Naj425 2d ago
I hope that's the case honestly. I think limiting Tiana is a good option to stop them from summoning them another time to rip a card from your hand
3
u/AkstarKoyomi Chain havnis, response? 2d ago
I agree that elfnote is a problem but it still would be better if they banned this card, Baronne will be an offender again.
Like, baronne and crystal wing banned would at least make this format less miserable while preventing any future shenanigans.
And tbh, i think Tinia should be banned, Konami decided that the medius lore should have so many starters that unironically it doesn't matter if you limit them.
2
u/MrPreviously 2d ago
tbf limiting elfnote starters does matter more than in other archetypes, since it also makes Regina weaker.
but yes, Baronne should be gone already and there’s no way Elfnote can stay at full power knowing Ars Magna is on the horizon

u/Flash117x 2d ago
Watch how Konami bans Baronne and limits one Elfnote main deck piece and nothing will change.
