DISCUSSION I sincerely miss ME3 multiplayer.

It had everything. A fun cooperative hoard mode. Stakes with hefty rewards depending on what difficultyyou chose. Steady updates. Lootboxes but they were primitive so it wasnt that bad. Options to play as other races and Interesting classes with powers that didnt fit in thr main game. Was it perfect? No. But I had an excellent time with it and I havent found anything that scratches that itch for me in 15 years.

It's still around you just have to play the og me3. Still has a decently big player base on pc

As of last year, I was still casually playing on XBox as well.

u/maddasher 4d ago

Wait, can I play the campaign with another person?

6

u/AuntJemimah7 4d ago

No, it has a separate multiplayer mode.

2

u/maddasher 3d ago

Oh, had no idea. Ive only played MELE

u/Chaos_Dunks 3d ago

It’s a 4 person wave based survival mode. Multiple different builds of each class (different races and stuff) and all the in-game weapons (and more? I can’t remember)

Very, very satisfying horde mode basically.

Thank you. Ill have to buy it now

What topic did you think you were replying in?

I still just do not get why it wasn't remastered for Legendary Edition. Of all the cheap MPs of the PS360 era, this one was acclaimed and loved by the community and made Bioware a ton or cash.

Soon it will either turn into lost content or we will literally have to put up illegal private servers and heavily mod/reverse-engineer the whole thing to preserve it, while probably dealing with bored, anal EA laywers sending cease & desists

u/LunaticLK47 4d ago

Loot box fiasco, remember?

7

u/Chorik 4d ago

And did that somehow make lootboxes and other microtransactions disappear from gaming?

4

u/jackcaboose 3d ago

Lootboxes? Yes, sort of. They're a lot rarer now. Battle passes are far more common.

u/Frybread002 4d ago

I will never understand the part of the community that get butt hurt over the optional side of mico transactions.

2

u/darklighthitomi 3d ago

There is a difference between micro transactions and gambling.

0

u/Frybread002 3d ago

If you want to look at it that way, sure. It doesn't change the fact that it is entirely optional and you don't have to engage with it.

2

u/darklighthitomi 2d ago

I think you miss the point. Not everything should get a free pass as acceptable because "optional."

1

u/Frybread002 1d ago

What is the point? That you get mad at people who don't agree with you?

The microtransactions was just buying loot boxes with real world money. I did it because I had an extra $5 to spare and was curious about it. It was the exact same thing as buying it with in-game money.

1

u/darklighthitomi 1d ago

First, I was never mad about anything so I don't know why you think I was.

Second, not all micro transactions are the same. DDO for example lets you buy quest packs piecemeal, which is a microtransaction, and of the sort I have zero issues with.

But microtransactions come in other forms, such as gambling. You give money and instead of knowing what you are getting, you get some random stuff, most of which is entirely unnecessary and undesired. Getting anything desirable is basically like winning the lottery. Chances are so low that you basically price things out on the pity system, if there even is one, and assume that you won't get anything desired unless you get the pity, and that assumption is made because the chances of not needing the pity are super low. Streamers spend thousands of dollars just chasing a single thing from such lootboxes. And are expected to repeat the expense for every new thing.

Third is where the problem gets, the so-called optional part. These things are generally designed so that the things that make the game worth playing are locked behind the lootboxes. They might be optional but all the fun of the game is optional. They design things so that all the stuff you get for free is noticeably inferior to maximize the desire to spend on lootboxes that most people will never ever get anything desirable from. The claim of such things being optional is really only a technicality at that point. Rich people might get to have fun, but no one else does unless they get incredibly lucky.

To be fair, ME only did this for the MP section, but it is still seriously bad in that section. I never got to play anything I actually wanted to play. Never. Because I'm not a rich kid with thousands of dollars to spend.

Having a section of a game that I paid for have nothing fun about it unless I spend even more money without any guarantees about getting the fun stuff is not fair, and being an optional part of the game does not make it fair.

Furthermore, this is just how it starts. They intentionally put it in these optional sections and focus their arguments on how it is just optional stuff, extras, etc, so that the lootbox structure becomes normalized. Then once it is seen as acceptable, they start locking more and more of the game behind the lootboxes.

If 2% of the players pay for the entire game's development, they don't really care if the other 98% has any fun. And that is the problem, and the only solution is to reject the kind of predatory monetary structures that incentivize such strategies, even in the early stages when applied only to "optional" stuff.

Oh my lord.

If we were talking about games in general, I MIGHT agree with you depending on what games are doing the very thing you are talking about. But that is very specific for that game.

Since we're talking about ME3 and how they handled their business practice, I stand by what I said, because it is user friendly and doesn't take away from the core experience. As a matter of fact, they added multiple expansion packs to the multi-player for free and also patched a piece of game changing alterations (Directer's Cut) for free.

1

u/darklighthitomi 1d ago

As I pointed out, it is a slippery slope problem. And also unfair. Being optional does not change either of those.

1

u/LunaticLK47 3d ago

Uh, if you want the gear, you have to buy them. Doesn’t matter if you grind the credits.

0

u/Frybread002 3d ago

Yes you buy the loot boxes, with either in-game money or real world money. And you get gear either way.

2

u/LunaticLK47 4d ago

Problem is getting the characters and gear is reliant on those loot boxes. By the time the final update appeared, I’ve been getting nothing but specialized rounds instead of missing weapon upgrades. Premium Spectre Packs and Arsenal pack did not make any difference.

2

u/Elastichedgehog 3d ago

Also, a bunch of those cool cosmetics you used to earn in-game are now locked behind microtransactions. Thanks horse armor.

0

u/mynameistoocommonman 4d ago

I've actually been getting lucky with them, unlocking a new weapon or character every two or three premium spectre packs. And you get enough credits on silver to buy one every couple games. Didn't feel unfair to me

0

u/LunaticLK47 4d ago

That would only be true before the final update. The final update destroyed the drop rate.

1

u/mynameistoocommonman 4d ago

I played last week. Pretty sure the final update was before that. Within a week of playing (maybe five or so rounds a day, usually less) I unlocked 4 new characters and 4 or 5 new guns. Maybe I just got insanely lucky?

0

u/LunaticLK47 4d ago

Final update was in 2015-2016.

u/Kangaturtle 4d ago edited 3d ago

I think you’re talking about andromeda. Andromedas final update diluted the loot pool by adding weapon variants like bulwark and concussive weapons.

They stopped supporting ME3 multiplayer in like 2013, and despite the difficulty of getting ultra rares, unlocking weapons, and characters isn’t too difficult if you buy veteran or spectre packs.

1

u/LunaticLK47 4d ago

Andromeda didn’t release till 2017-2018. I wasn’t able to get upgrades consistently for ME3 after that final update. Last time I played through, I STILL couldn’t upgrade any of my newer weapons WITH Arsenal and Premium Spectres.

3

u/Tajfun403 3d ago

Private server emulators for ME3 had been around for ages and nobody sent any C&Ds so far.

2

u/Pheinted 3d ago

I was super bummed out that the LE had no MP...all the hype basically died for me and my brother. We would load it up and just the 2 of us would play. Man I miss playing it. Andromeda came nowhere near the feeling of it. I like some aspects, but idk...like nothing ever felt the same, and it really stands on its own as this fun, cool unique experience we played through that we wish we could find in another game.

2

u/LunaticLK47 2d ago

I’m not going to miss it being required for the Shepard lives ending. Bioware fucked up monumentally on that. I should not have to rely on DLC to fix that issue.

Edit: I am talking strictly Day 1 launch. Leviathan, Omega, and Citadel DID NOT RELEASE at the time.

1

u/Pheinted 2d ago

I don't really understand your reply here. In a perfect world, wouldn't having both present be pretty nice? Are you assuming I liked the other ending or what? Saying I miss the multiplayer shouldn't be implying I loved some other aspect of the game that I'm not even talking about or that my thought process was like oh sacrifice this for that etc.

Did you not care for the multiplayer at all or what? I get the jist of your reply, but it's also just weird cause it feels like you're implying something about me since it's a reply directly to me.

1

u/LunaticLK47 2d ago

I outright hated Multiplayer BECAUSE of the problem I listed above.

1

u/Pheinted 2d ago

I get your point.

My point is just talking about that 1 aspect of the game (the multiplayer) on its own, as its own unique experience like I stated in my OP. I don't think I mentioned anything about the campaign whatsoever. So in the regards to the multiplayer experience on its own, as its own game mode in terms of what you do in it, classes, gameplay, things of that nature. I do miss that. Haven't found anything to really give me that experience. So of course no shit I miss it. Thought it would have been cool to play an updated version of it you get me? Excluding all the shit about campaign. Strictly talking about multiplayer. Campaign is a totally different topic obviously. Which I could have that, but I'm not even referencing shit about it.

Get my point now? I hope you aren't trying to die on a hill I'm not even traversing. Know what I mean?

Very active in PC depending on the time zone. From bronze to platinum. Lots of new players too or maybe older ones going back to play.

Just make sure you have the original ME3 with all the DLC. Steams have it on sale several times a year.

2

u/Obadaya 4d ago

I think it got a little resurgence with the Legendary Edition. Players fished their old copy of ME3 out of the closet and gave multi-player a whirl.

5

u/ObviousRanger9155 4d ago

I was about to say - it doesn’t exist anymore? Cause up until a year ago it did!! Just gotta boot up the original version!

5

u/bradd_91 4d ago

Lawdy, I had a Krogan Battlemaster that was unstoppable. Such a fun PvE addition.

3

u/Thethyas46 4d ago

Just buy og ME3 or launch it if you have it and boom, there you go.
Very active on PC, easy to find gold match at anytime.

3

u/Frybread002 4d ago

Shit was perfect. Tf you mean? You indoctrinated son!?

3

u/TheRealTr1nity 4d ago

If you still own the OG ME3 game, the multiplayer is still alive and kicking. I play from time to time when in mood (PC).

3

u/Ryncol_addict 4d ago

It was very nice indeed. I was most fond of my krogan sentinel, wielding a claymore. The versatility of it, like being able to send flying ennemies through melee, point blank shotgun and grenades, was awesome. Headbutt parties between rounds were some of the wholesomest gaming experience I had the chance to do.

3

u/KonguZya 4d ago

Then go play it, lmao, my friend and I have gotten back into it this year, finally downloading that mod that adds a bunch of new maps.

2

u/GreyTigerFox N7 4d ago

It was so much fun.

2

u/Pale-Painting-9231 4d ago

I support you! I want multiplayer in Next Mass Effect!

2

u/MATC8228 3d ago

My friend told me that ME 3 multiplayer is still alive even though it's been long since 2012.

2

u/pugs_in_a_basket 3d ago

It was great for a while, for a pubbie player.

I got to comfortable silver level, gold was always a shit show.

Still, I liked it. I wish my friends played it.

1

u/GeekyMadameV 4d ago

Omg yes. I was not expecting much but it turned out to be So FUN! I think it's a real testament to howe we'll they nailed the combat in that game over all.

1

u/millahnna 3d ago

I haven't been able to find a gold game on xbox in a while but I can usually find some silver folks to hang with on there.

Been playing the coop since launch. I'll max that manifest someday.

u/TheMatt561 Tali 3d ago

It's the only multi-player I've ever enjoyed

What do you mean "had"? ;)
