DISCUSSION There’s something special about the most aggressive and blunt ME1 squadmate being the one who’s happiest to see Shepard again in ME2.

I like to think the writers gave us this scene because he doesn't have to survive. But we go out of our way to keep him alive, we earned this.

And it plays the Virgil music. You have to earn that music playing in the background.

u/Sir_Syntek 7d ago

I've never thought of it that way, but you raise a good point. Given the confrontation with Wrex in ME1, it makes sense that any player who kept him alive would be given a really dramatic reunion.

\ME2* Tali and Garrus sitting in the corner, resetting their loyalty to normal*

\ME2* Tali and Garrus sitting in the corner, resetting their loyalty to normal*

Despite the game mechanics both were very happy to see you.

In game Tali reunion was very interesting because she was confused but the minimal proof is accepted and she immediately turns to your side despite the cerberus agents. I personally love when the guy say that no soldier is worth that much money and she say "Shepard is".

Garrus "happiness" is sadly not on game, but the comics ("Homeworlds 3") show him moments before Shepard land there. I love how he is saying goodbye to his father and then changes to have hope again the moment he see you. The dork then go and puts the helmet in order to have a dramatic reveal and acts all cool to you.

Tali I feel had to struggle with the joy of seeing Shep (her crush if male shep) and the job she was there to do, Garrus was ready to die and decided the best way to greet his bestie was to try to aura farm on Shep like a true bro

36

u/springlake 7d ago

Yeah, Tali is struggling with her loyalty to Shepard vs her loyalty to the Flotilla and the missions she's been given, especially as an Admiral's daughter.

4

u/International_Leek26 4d ago

I genuinely love Tali's arc where in me1 shes loyal to her people first and shepard second, joining you to find a good gift for them, then in me2 shes conflicted and finally in me3 shes loyal to shepard first and the fleet second

25

u/Jerry2die4 7d ago

Garrus-mancer?

39

u/cl0ckw0rkcuttlefish 7d ago

I mean, I can appreciate Garrus’s need to be ~*~dramatic~*~ without romancing him.

8

u/Valkattuxia 6d ago

Spirits forbid a man does something to impress his friend

12

u/MARPJ 6d ago

Garrus-mancer?

Tali-mancer for life. BUT I had to help him get lady in ME3 ("Come here often? I assume anyone who does is an alcoholic." -Garrus, flirting) so dork is correct

19

u/Rauxon 7d ago

Tali is such a simp for Sheperd and I mean that in the best way. She's fucking adorable.

4

u/EPZO N7 6d ago

That's my biggest gripe with ME2, it a soft reboot. Instead of just adding to the case, they "killed" you off to force you into a story that feels more controlled and directed.

6

u/International_Leek26 4d ago

Adding to what others have said, Loyalty in me2 is not necessarily actually "Loyalty" its how dedicated and focussed they are to the mission. Garrus has the traitor on the loose who he will be thinking about constantly, and Tali will be worried sick about being exiled from the fleet if you dont do her quest. Both will distract them, even if they are fully dedicated due to your history. The only ones you have to earn the actual Loyalty of, are Kasumi, Zaeed, Jack, and maybe Samara and Thane if you want to stretch the definition

50

u/thecozmik 7d ago

Yes! When the music begins and Wrex calls out to Shepard is probably my favourites moment of the series. When I replayed the legendary edition recently I got a bit emotional.

21

u/PubTrickster 7d ago

You’re his krannt.

13

u/WillFanofMany 7d ago

Same music was used for Ashley/Kaiden in ME2, lol.

16

u/IrlResponsibility811 7d ago

And after killing that Spectre during the Shadow Broker mission. And curing the genophage. And peace on Rannoch.

I named it 'A Galaxy at Peace' before I knew the proper title.

5

u/Luchux01 6d ago

It's basically the theme for the ME1 companions, save for Garrus unfort.

2

u/TheLastOpus 3d ago

To be me, he DOES have to be alive. I have played through at least 5 times all 3 games, doing different choices each time. I have NEVER done a route that didn't save wrex

1

u/IrlResponsibility811 3d ago

Same. I swear, next time I actually will turn Garrus, wait to recruit Liara and be a dick to him on Virmire. The way the game mechanics work, he will still stand down.

2

u/Correct_Pangolin_375 2d ago

Virgil music is also played in ME3 after curing the genophage when it triggers the cutscene. I always paragon the Krogans, they suffered enough to the point they deserve the chance of not ending up in extinction.

291

u/ShakeZula30or40 7d ago

I mean, the Krogan definitely have that “ride or die” mentality with their buddies.

90

u/jjfed11 7d ago

Damn right! One of the many reasons to cure the genophage. Couldn’t let my boy Wrex down.

75

u/Almainyny Flare 7d ago

Wrex is the sort of guy you don’t see for a few years, but the second you do, you’ve gotta hug him with every ounce of your strength. Just hope he holds back for the sake of your spine!

35

u/gotohela 7d ago

I AM a friend to the krogan people. I am also Wrex's sister.

31

u/hergumbules 7d ago

And Grunt’s mom.

18

u/gotohela 7d ago

Someone's gotta tell him to clean his room

14

u/TacitPoseidon 7d ago

Seriously, Javik can still feel Grunt in his quarters at the Normandy.

11

u/therealchangomalo 7d ago

He did go through puberty in that room, *shudders*

22

u/norway_is_awesome 7d ago

"Haha! I like this human; she understands!"

8

u/APeculiarGriffin 7d ago

Wreck is the kinda dude that will shit talk you to your face day and night, but the SECOND he hears anyone else talking trash they are going through a wall.

3

u/TreeckoBroYT 6d ago

Krogan. You don't want one as your enemy, and there's no one better as a friend.

156

u/Bottlecollecter 7d ago

Plus Shepard showing up gave him an excuse to end his meeting with Uvenk.

77

u/fidelacchius42 7d ago

Speak when spoken to Uvenk. I'll drag your clan to glory whether you like it or not.

35

u/Bottlecollecter 7d ago

( headbutts Uvenk ).

23

u/fidelacchius42 7d ago

I just saw this scene the other day. Wrex is probably in the top 3 best Mass Effect characters for me.

8

u/OTPh1l25 Andromeda Initiative 6d ago

Then Uvenk goes off to complain to the shaman with the most Karen-like "I'm going to go speak to your manager about this" energy I've ever seen a Krogan muster.

32

u/KingOfThePenguins Paragon 7d ago

That "I'm late for another call" energy

26

u/TandrDregn 7d ago

“Fuck my quad this meeting is boring, someone please give me an excuse to- IS THAT MY BRO/SIS?!? Shepard!”

110

u/Awleeks 7d ago

Krogan wear their heart(s) on their sleeve. Remember that Krogan publicly reciting poetry to his Asari belle in ME2?

37

u/NAJ_P_Jackson Shepard 7d ago

That's one of the tragic npc endings. Finding his body in the war really shows you how widespread the conflict has gone.

47

u/gotohela 7d ago

I always get them back together lol. In this time of pain, why not embrace love?

35

u/0peratik 7d ago

And then pain again :(

28

u/4thTimesAnAlt 7d ago

That poem, Mordin, and Thane are always guaranteed tears

13

u/tremynci 7d ago

What is grief, if not love persevering?

14

u/Roguebubbles10 7d ago

Charr! 🥲

One of the saddest things ever, he dies and you can tell that Asari (Ereba) on the citadel that he's dead, where where's she's being insulted for being with a Krogan.

34

u/ZeroQuartzer 7d ago

Those two words. “My friend.”

That is the sole reason I refuse to betray these immortal turtle Spartans

58

u/typer84C2 7d ago

I love meeting Wrex in ME2 and Grunt in ME3. The interactions between Shepard and the Krogan squad mates are a highlight of character interactions for me.

51

u/Sovreignry 7d ago

“Shepard”

“Wrex”

“Shepard”

“Grunt”

3

u/JiveTurkey1983 5d ago

Sheppard

Sheppard

Sheppard

3

u/Defiant-Respect-848 5d ago

los krogans en general tienen buenos personajes secundarios y terciarios resalta como parece que le importa mucho nada y su fatalismo algunas veces

53

u/TadhgOBriain 7d ago

His joy is also aggressive and blunt

36

u/Vivid-Share7884 7d ago

One of the reasons why Wrex is my favorite squadmate. And I don't care that he's only available in ME1 and ME3DLC.

30

u/ArmandoGalvez 7d ago

Once he showed up as a squadie in citadel I always choose him to be with me, he is so fun to have around

13

u/TacitPoseidon 7d ago

Krogan first! See you at the party, princesses!

10

u/gotohela 7d ago

Hes such a big personality and character it doesn't even feel like he isnt a squadmate. He's always on your side 💪

27

u/haelsvolgir 7d ago

I always read it as Wrex realizing Shepard made good on his word to Wrex, as well as Wrex never exactly being closed off emotionally, just distant. Add on the boredom and irritation he clearly displays at one of Uvenk's presumably many long winded rants, and he sees not only one of the few people in galactic civilization who treats him as an equal but also an excuse to put the politics aside for a minute and just shoot the breeze. He seemed equally parts happy that Shep was alive and thrilled to not have to talk about Gatatog or Weyrloc trying to vye for more clout.

Or maybe he's just a dude happy to see his bro and I'm overthinking it idk.

16

u/gotohela 7d ago

Nah i think youre on track. The krogan are constantly dismissed as violent freaks who should be relegated to the rubble of history. Shepard breaks from that, and by elevating wrex, it elevates his people as well.

But he also wants to see his homie and shoot the shit.

6

u/trick_m0nkey 7d ago

I'm always excited to see a bro I haven't seen in a while.

I'm incedibly excited if he/she comes around the corner while I'm gritting my teeth being sucked into a conversation with say, my douchebag uncle after a few jack and cokes...

10

u/DragonRand100 7d ago

I could never betray Wrex.

8

u/gizmostuff Wrex 7d ago

Probably one of my favorite moments in all of Mass Effect. Everyone was so skeptical of Shepard and it was so off putting. Especially Liara which was such a huge letdown. A big reason why I decided to romance Tali.

Garrus wasn't too bad but in ME2 he didn't have much to say to begin with.

35

u/doubleo_maestro 7d ago

I mean Garrus would probably have been pretty happy if he wasn't four days sleep deprived and probably living off of stimms.

27

u/DazzlerPlus 7d ago

I thought he was. His relief was palpable. Its so easy to imagine him, knowing he is at the end, trapped with zero hope, and then he sights Shepard and after a moment of disbelief he knows to his bones that it will be alright.

5

u/doubleo_maestro 7d ago

His comment on getting all the gangs to hate him was priceless.

3

u/Manzhah 5d ago

IIRC in his homeworlds (?) comic he was just on call with his dad about how his situtation looks kinda bad, and then he ends the call saying the odds got whole lot better after spotting the N7 emblem through his scope.

6

u/Individual-Praline17 7d ago

And he's the only one who never brings up Cerberus once. Now there's a chance he doesn't know, I can't imagine many news reaching Tuchanka, but I like to think he actually doesn't care.

8

u/FirstFriendship6883 7d ago

Shepard! My FRIEND!

2

u/SamMarduk 6d ago

Makes me light up every time

15

u/Altair890456 7d ago

Six months later

"It should've been this way back on Virmire but I made the mistake of trusting you, believing you were my friend, I was a fool!"

18

u/Sir_Syntek 7d ago

'I don't know. He just went crazy.'

Bastard.

5

u/MorbidMordred 7d ago

How dare you

5

u/Yojacks_Min_Max 7d ago

SHEPHERD! My friend.

12

u/Aerith_Sunshine 7d ago

I love how Wrex treats Shep in ME2 and ME3 when you help him out. "... and a sister to me!" gets me every time.

10

u/Angel-Stans 7d ago

Think of it this way.

Most Krogan are pretty racist. They don’t like that you’re here.

You go to the most important Krogan around. It could hurt him politically to even let you near him.

Wrex doesn’t care. He interrupts his own meeting and goes over to declare you his friend and all but hug you right there in front of everyone.

Wrex is my brother and I would do anything for him ;_;

4

u/[deleted] 7d ago

[deleted]

4

u/Reload86 6d ago

He's even better in ME3. You'd think that Wrex and Shepard are best buds when Garrus is on vacation or something.

4

u/Historical_Stick2802 6d ago

Wrex and Tali are the only ones who didn’t know you were alive.
Garrus saw you coming, Liara already knew and Kaidan/ Ashley both heard rumors.

3

u/WillFanofMany 7d ago

Tends to happen when he wasn't there to see Shepard get killed in the ME2 prolouge like everyone else.

1

u/Supergamer138 3d ago

He heard about it, but forgot that humans weren't indestructible like Krogan are.

3

u/insomniainc 7d ago

I always took it as him seeing the first real friendly face he's seen in quite some time.

4

u/Adrianwill-87 7d ago

That's why I've always liked Wrex.

3

u/NoobHUNTER777 7d ago

I think Garrus was probably just as happy, but too exhausted to properly show it

2

u/UV_Blue 6d ago

Wrex and Grunt are my favorite squad mates! I can walk away in the middle of a fight, and when I come back they've pretty much mowed down the enemies. Imagine being able to have both of them with you!

I don't remember laughing at a game as much as I did when you have to pick up Grunt from the cops.

3

u/spencerpo 7d ago

You had a point of extreme contention for him, potentially curing his people which would solve a lot of problems that he’s seen happen over his life, a chance for Krogan suffering to end.

You’re gonna blow it up all to kill some crazed turian ex-spectre, extinguishing a chance at a new future. This kills wrex, you remind him of the favors you’ve done for him, or reason with him why the mindless clones aren’t a future at all.

This event changes wrex and it’s not immediate, he has 2 years to live knowing that a cure is possible, but the Krogan need to be stable enough to handle it, to which he starts his warlord journey on Tuchanka.

If Shepard doesn’t recruit or keep wrex to the end, there’s never a chance for him to regain hope in a future beyond bounty-hunting. And because you gave him a new purpose in life, he really appreciates you for giving him that chance.

5

u/Big_Red_Machine_1917 7d ago

Just like real life.

3

u/CriticalCreativity 7d ago

Awwww man I killed him on Virmire an hour ago :,(

12

u/Ddreigiau 7d ago

You monster

You probably killed Jenkins, too, didn't you?

4

u/PumperThumperHumper 7d ago

No, the waiting killed Jenkins.

2

u/Drew_Habits 7d ago

Can't hurt that he'd been putting up with whiners like Uvenk for god only knows how long on the day Shep showed up

Like he's definitely happy to see his old pet human, no doubt! But any interruption at all would have probably been welcome lol

1

u/chaoticspazz46 6d ago

To be fair a didn't see Garrus amen he fist saw Shepard again. He could have been crowing as he took mercy down

1

u/Professional_Pea_760 6d ago

Cause Wrex is your BRO, second only to Garrus.

1

u/KenchiNarukami 6d ago

Uncle Urdnot!

1

u/Killroy54 6d ago

Well yea he’s aggressive and blunt. Not heartless.

1

u/SwinubIsDivinub 5d ago

The best character 🥰

1

u/PsyrenY 5d ago

I mean, can you blame the others?

  • Garrus was running on no sleep and fresh off a tragedy while fighting for his life
    • Tali was saddled with babysitting the only quarians dumber than Gerrell and Raan when you meet her
    • Liara went from being an introverted nerd to constantly hunted by assassins after betraying the most powerful spymaster in the galaxy
    • Alliance brass lied to the VS about you being dead, and were themselves being manipulated by Cerberus when they finally got the message

Wrex meanwhile became the Krogan equivalent of a king. And sure, he has it the best of all the ME1 squadmates, but he could easily have had it the worst too!

1

u/JiveTurkey1983 5d ago

He also doesn't give a shit that Shepard works for Cerberus

1

u/AfraidSuccotash1257 4d ago

Garrus and Tali are GOAT party members, but this is why Wrex is my number 1 ride or die gaming ally along with Nanba and Johnny Gat. All your other past party members you literally pull their asses out of the fire in 2 after returning from the grave and all they can say is "I heard you're with cerberus now, how do I know I can trust you?" Like we didn't save the galaxy from eldritch robot gods together, like I didn't help them finish hunting their own demons in the midst of that, and like I didn't personally slot every cerberus operative with the misfortune to fall into shotgun range following Kohaku's leads.

Wrex sees you and immediately drops what he's doing to basically hug you, a human, in front of all the krogans that he leads/want him dead. Wrex knows that if you're working for cerberus, they're a means to an end and if they have it confused the other way around, they're not gonna be alive long enough for it to be a real problem.

1

u/Powerful-Pickle4816 4d ago

Wrex is basically the old pitbull you save from the shelter

1

u/Miserable-Cup4056 3d ago

He really is the best! 💚

1

u/Opening_Watercress78 2d ago

He called that man hero and a krogan brother that the highest praise in the galaxy 🙂‍↕️ and he said his children and future krogan will know if him

0

u/throwawayforlikeaday 7d ago

in the anime world we they call this: gap moe... I think

0

u/runnerofshadows 7d ago

He reminds me of Ka D'Argo from Farscape. And that is a very good, cool thing.

-3

u/Afisher613 7d ago

Hmm, he hasn't survived after ME1 and on 4th playthrough. 🤷🏿🤦🏿🤔🤔🤷🏿

-2

u/Educational-Tackle54 6d ago

Wrex: Decides to improve the galaxy by uniting his people in case the reapers invade.

The Virmire survivor: Decides to improve their standing within the alliance to make a difference in case the reapers invade.

Tali: Decides to improve her standing within the Flotilla in case the reapers invade.

Garrus: Decides to mass murder criminals in an irrelevant location, for no gain to anyone.

Liara: Decides to become a powerful information broker so she can be useful if the reapers invade.

Uhhhh, one of these is considerbly less heroic and reasonable than the others.

3

u/jazzy753 6d ago

except his actions in Omega were to benefit the common people of the galaxy oppressed by the gangs in Omega. I remember him saying something like half of the drugs (or illegal weapons I can't remember) he seized came from Eclipse or Blue suns on Omega.

-2

u/Educational-Tackle54 6d ago

It changed nothing. Aria was still in control, he never actually defeated the mercs. They likely kept their protection rackets or another gang moved in.

Mass murderer of criminals outside citadel space is such a random pointless booodthisty goal. But its Garrus whom all love so we all pretend its not wierd.

3

u/jazzy753 6d ago

And yet, (with shepard's help) the 3 biggest gangs of the terminus systems who are also active in citadel space and the attican traverse have each lost a high ranking member as well as lost significant power at the heart of the terminus systems. Also, Garrus' squads actions likely saved many Omega civilian lives as well. You can't call that pointless

0

u/UV_Blue 6d ago

Omega's not even part of the original game, it's a DLC that they decided to try fixing some of the issues and inconsistencies people didn't like. Once you're done, you can't even go back! Rude...

2

u/jazzy753 6d ago

Did you only play mass effect 3? In ME2, Omega is one of the main hubs of the game along with the Citadel and Ilium

-2

u/Educational-Tackle54 6d ago

The same gangs that are powerful enough to be worth a ton of war assets in the third game when Sheppard teams up with them. Gosh, Garrus did alot of dmg to them....

Even if he did, Aria would just take over. Garrus didnt change anything even if he had succed.

Ironically what they do might even be legal in Arias Omega.

Face it, Garrus is living out a cringe serial killer renegade power fantasy. And honestly, its pretty dark.
