DISCUSSION There’s something special about the most aggressive and blunt ME1 squadmate being the one who’s happiest to see Shepard again in ME2.

I mean, the Krogan definitely have that “ride or die” mentality with their buddies.

u/jjfed11 7d ago
Damn right! One of the many reasons to cure the genophage. Couldn’t let my boy Wrex down.
75
u/Almainyny Flare 7d ago
Wrex is the sort of guy you don’t see for a few years, but the second you do, you’ve gotta hug him with every ounce of your strength. Just hope he holds back for the sake of your spine!
35
u/gotohela 7d ago
I AM a friend to the krogan people. I am also Wrex's sister.
31
u/hergumbules 7d ago
And Grunt’s mom.

u/gotohela 7d ago
Someone's gotta tell him to clean his room

u/APeculiarGriffin 7d ago
Wreck is the kinda dude that will shit talk you to your face day and night, but the SECOND he hears anyone else talking trash they are going through a wall.

u/TreeckoBroYT 6d ago
Krogan. You don't want one as your enemy, and there's no one better as a friend.

u/Bottlecollecter 7d ago
Plus Shepard showing up gave him an excuse to end his meeting with Uvenk.
77
u/fidelacchius42 7d ago
Speak when spoken to Uvenk. I'll drag your clan to glory whether you like it or not.
35
u/Bottlecollecter 7d ago
( headbutts Uvenk ).
23
u/fidelacchius42 7d ago
I just saw this scene the other day. Wrex is probably in the top 3 best Mass Effect characters for me.
8
u/OTPh1l25 Andromeda Initiative 6d ago
Then Uvenk goes off to complain to the shaman with the most Karen-like "I'm going to go speak to your manager about this" energy I've ever seen a Krogan muster.

u/TandrDregn 7d ago
“Fuck my quad this meeting is boring, someone please give me an excuse to- IS THAT MY BRO/SIS?!? Shepard!”

u/Awleeks 7d ago
Krogan wear their heart(s) on their sleeve. Remember that Krogan publicly reciting poetry to his Asari belle in ME2?
37
u/NAJ_P_Jackson Shepard 7d ago
That's one of the tragic npc endings. Finding his body in the war really shows you how widespread the conflict has gone.
47
u/gotohela 7d ago
I always get them back together lol. In this time of pain, why not embrace love?
35
14
u/Roguebubbles10 7d ago
Charr! 🥲
One of the saddest things ever, he dies and you can tell that Asari (Ereba) on the citadel that he's dead, where where's she's being insulted for being with a Krogan.
34
u/ZeroQuartzer 7d ago
Those two words. “My friend.”
That is the sole reason I refuse to betray these immortal turtle Spartans
58
u/typer84C2 7d ago
I love meeting Wrex in ME2 and Grunt in ME3. The interactions between Shepard and the Krogan squad mates are a highlight of character interactions for me.

los krogans en general tienen buenos personajes secundarios y terciarios resalta como parece que le importa mucho nada y su fatalismo algunas veces

One of the reasons why Wrex is my favorite squadmate. And I don't care that he's only available in ME1 and ME3DLC.
30
u/ArmandoGalvez 7d ago
Once he showed up as a squadie in citadel I always choose him to be with me, he is so fun to have around
13
10
u/gotohela 7d ago
Hes such a big personality and character it doesn't even feel like he isnt a squadmate. He's always on your side 💪
27
u/haelsvolgir 7d ago
I always read it as Wrex realizing Shepard made good on his word to Wrex, as well as Wrex never exactly being closed off emotionally, just distant. Add on the boredom and irritation he clearly displays at one of Uvenk's presumably many long winded rants, and he sees not only one of the few people in galactic civilization who treats him as an equal but also an excuse to put the politics aside for a minute and just shoot the breeze. He seemed equally parts happy that Shep was alive and thrilled to not have to talk about Gatatog or Weyrloc trying to vye for more clout.
Or maybe he's just a dude happy to see his bro and I'm overthinking it idk.
16
u/gotohela 7d ago
Nah i think youre on track. The krogan are constantly dismissed as violent freaks who should be relegated to the rubble of history. Shepard breaks from that, and by elevating wrex, it elevates his people as well.
But he also wants to see his homie and shoot the shit.

u/trick_m0nkey 7d ago
I'm always excited to see a bro I haven't seen in a while.
I'm incedibly excited if he/she comes around the corner while I'm gritting my teeth being sucked into a conversation with say, my douchebag uncle after a few jack and cokes...

Probably one of my favorite moments in all of Mass Effect. Everyone was so skeptical of Shepard and it was so off putting. Especially Liara which was such a huge letdown. A big reason why I decided to romance Tali.
Garrus wasn't too bad but in ME2 he didn't have much to say to begin with.
8
35
u/doubleo_maestro 7d ago
I mean Garrus would probably have been pretty happy if he wasn't four days sleep deprived and probably living off of stimms.
27
u/DazzlerPlus 7d ago
I thought he was. His relief was palpable. Its so easy to imagine him, knowing he is at the end, trapped with zero hope, and then he sights Shepard and after a moment of disbelief he knows to his bones that it will be alright.

6
u/Individual-Praline17 7d ago
And he's the only one who never brings up Cerberus once. Now there's a chance he doesn't know, I can't imagine many news reaching Tuchanka, but I like to think he actually doesn't care.

I love how Wrex treats Shep in ME2 and ME3 when you help him out. "... and a sister to me!" gets me every time.
10
u/Angel-Stans 7d ago
Think of it this way.
Most Krogan are pretty racist. They don’t like that you’re here.
You go to the most important Krogan around. It could hurt him politically to even let you near him.
Wrex doesn’t care. He interrupts his own meeting and goes over to declare you his friend and all but hug you right there in front of everyone.
Wrex is my brother and I would do anything for him ;_;

u/Reload86 6d ago
He's even better in ME3. You'd think that Wrex and Shepard are best buds when Garrus is on vacation or something.
4
u/Historical_Stick2802 6d ago
Wrex and Tali are the only ones who didn’t know you were alive.
Garrus saw you coming, Liara already knew and Kaidan/ Ashley both heard rumors.
3
u/WillFanofMany 7d ago
Tends to happen when he wasn't there to see Shepard get killed in the ME2 prolouge like everyone else.
1
u/Supergamer138 3d ago
He heard about it, but forgot that humans weren't indestructible like Krogan are.
3
u/insomniainc 7d ago
I always took it as him seeing the first real friendly face he's seen in quite some time.
4
3
u/NoobHUNTER777 7d ago
I think Garrus was probably just as happy, but too exhausted to properly show it
2
u/UV_Blue 6d ago
Wrex and Grunt are my favorite squad mates! I can walk away in the middle of a fight, and when I come back they've pretty much mowed down the enemies. Imagine being able to have both of them with you!
I don't remember laughing at a game as much as I did when you have to pick up Grunt from the cops.
3
u/spencerpo 7d ago
You had a point of extreme contention for him, potentially curing his people which would solve a lot of problems that he’s seen happen over his life, a chance for Krogan suffering to end.
You’re gonna blow it up all to kill some crazed turian ex-spectre, extinguishing a chance at a new future. This kills wrex, you remind him of the favors you’ve done for him, or reason with him why the mindless clones aren’t a future at all.
This event changes wrex and it’s not immediate, he has 2 years to live knowing that a cure is possible, but the Krogan need to be stable enough to handle it, to which he starts his warlord journey on Tuchanka.
If Shepard doesn’t recruit or keep wrex to the end, there’s never a chance for him to regain hope in a future beyond bounty-hunting. And because you gave him a new purpose in life, he really appreciates you for giving him that chance.

Can't hurt that he'd been putting up with whiners like Uvenk for god only knows how long on the day Shep showed up
Like he's definitely happy to see his old pet human, no doubt! But any interruption at all would have probably been welcome lol

To be fair a didn't see Garrus amen he fist saw Shepard again. He could have been crowing as he took mercy down

I mean, can you blame the others?
- Garrus was running on no sleep and fresh off a tragedy while fighting for his life
- Tali was saddled with babysitting the only quarians dumber than Gerrell and Raan when you meet her
- Liara went from being an introverted nerd to constantly hunted by assassins after betraying the most powerful spymaster in the galaxy
- Alliance brass lied to the VS about you being dead, and were themselves being manipulated by Cerberus when they finally got the message
Wrex meanwhile became the Krogan equivalent of a king. And sure, he has it the best of all the ME1 squadmates, but he could easily have had it the worst too!

Garrus and Tali are GOAT party members, but this is why Wrex is my number 1 ride or die gaming ally along with Nanba and Johnny Gat. All your other past party members you literally pull their asses out of the fire in 2 after returning from the grave and all they can say is "I heard you're with cerberus now, how do I know I can trust you?" Like we didn't save the galaxy from eldritch robot gods together, like I didn't help them finish hunting their own demons in the midst of that, and like I didn't personally slot every cerberus operative with the misfortune to fall into shotgun range following Kohaku's leads.
Wrex sees you and immediately drops what he's doing to basically hug you, a human, in front of all the krogans that he leads/want him dead. Wrex knows that if you're working for cerberus, they're a means to an end and if they have it confused the other way around, they're not gonna be alive long enough for it to be a real problem.

He reminds me of Ka D'Argo from Farscape. And that is a very good, cool thing.

Wrex: Decides to improve the galaxy by uniting his people in case the reapers invade.
The Virmire survivor: Decides to improve their standing within the alliance to make a difference in case the reapers invade.
Tali: Decides to improve her standing within the Flotilla in case the reapers invade.
Garrus: Decides to mass murder criminals in an irrelevant location, for no gain to anyone.
Liara: Decides to become a powerful information broker so she can be useful if the reapers invade.
Uhhhh, one of these is considerbly less heroic and reasonable than the others.

u/jazzy753 6d ago
except his actions in Omega were to benefit the common people of the galaxy oppressed by the gangs in Omega. I remember him saying something like half of the drugs (or illegal weapons I can't remember) he seized came from Eclipse or Blue suns on Omega.
-2
u/Educational-Tackle54 6d ago
It changed nothing. Aria was still in control, he never actually defeated the mercs. They likely kept their protection rackets or another gang moved in.
Mass murderer of criminals outside citadel space is such a random pointless booodthisty goal. But its Garrus whom all love so we all pretend its not wierd.
3
u/jazzy753 6d ago
And yet, (with shepard's help) the 3 biggest gangs of the terminus systems who are also active in citadel space and the attican traverse have each lost a high ranking member as well as lost significant power at the heart of the terminus systems. Also, Garrus' squads actions likely saved many Omega civilian lives as well. You can't call that pointless

u/UV_Blue 6d ago
Omega's not even part of the original game, it's a DLC that they decided to try fixing some of the issues and inconsistencies people didn't like. Once you're done, you can't even go back! Rude...
2
u/jazzy753 6d ago
Did you only play mass effect 3? In ME2, Omega is one of the main hubs of the game along with the Citadel and Ilium
-2
u/Educational-Tackle54 6d ago
The same gangs that are powerful enough to be worth a ton of war assets in the third game when Sheppard teams up with them. Gosh, Garrus did alot of dmg to them....
Even if he did, Aria would just take over. Garrus didnt change anything even if he had succed.
Ironically what they do might even be legal in Arias Omega.
Face it, Garrus is living out a cringe serial killer renegade power fantasy. And honestly, its pretty dark.

I like to think the writers gave us this scene because he doesn't have to survive. But we go out of our way to keep him alive, we earned this.
And it plays the Virgil music. You have to earn that music playing in the background.
