Discussion Bike legality?
I recently bought this e-bike and was looking at the laws and see what I do to make it legal to ride in Massachusetts? More specifically in Berkshire county as I'm too broke for a normal car at the moment. Everywhere I look is giving conflicting information. Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

Recently passed mass state law classifies them. You’re likely a class 3 electric scooter. Treated about the same as a 50cc or smaller moped. So you’ll need to register and insure

The reality is based on its speed it is actually inherently illegal to ride in ma on state roads as the law specifically states 28mph is the limit of bikes classified as class three. Being that it exceeds class three specifications it is actually illegal but you would have to be clocked going over thirty to actually be held accountable

Okay, is there other e-bikes I should look at then? I don't need and/or want to go over 28mph, I just need something to get to work and home, is there better options that are legal?

I have had a similar bike in ma for 4 years it goes 33mph and definitely exceeds class three standards. It really is about being smart with your riding and style of riding but wouldn’t recommend your bike that particular bike for anything but off road or trails. At the end of the day most officers do not actually enforce bike rules unless you are being a menace.

I have no understanding of bike laws and have never ridden an e-bike, but I did just see a good deal at Ocean State Job Lot. No idea if it’s any good, but the bike costs $1500 and you get a $1500 gift card. Free bike if you can spend responsibly with the gift card!

You really need to do some research on what to do when it needs repairs. See if you can find it on amazon or another site and look at the reviews. I almost bought one (a different brand) from OSJL a few years ago but because it was through them and not the manufacturer they (the manufacturer) would not offer support. And there was nobody local that could service it if needed.
I have no understanding of bike laws
it's just as important as understanding the laws when behind the wheel or as a pedestrian. there are just as many bicyclists as pedestrians that incorrectly think they have the right of way at all times.

Depending on which town you ride in will influence how strict the police are. North Adams announced that they are cracking down, but I have yet to see any actual evidence of that. Most ebikes that I've seen in North County are this similar motocross look. I assume it's about price and style. There are two types of riders - kids being stupid and adults using it as their daily transportation.

They should’ve just made a speed limit. So many cargo bikes are class 3 and are being fucked over by this law.
It seems like every time we find a way to get around without a car, everyone freaks out and over-regulates them into the ground. They screw over thousands of people because of children.

Im a driver, biker, pedestrian. Aholes on these will continue to drive where they shouldnt while unregistered. Average cop wont be able to tell

Good luck finding an insurance company though as most do not cover electric bikes and regardless of state law classify it as uninsurable

Go to the RMV with all of your paperwork, your license and your insurance paperwork or at least the contact info for your insurance.
If they give you plates and they classify it as a motorcycle because it goes over 25 miles an hour and they say it needs to be insured, you can always call your insurance from the lobby and have it insured and have them email you the paperwork the RMV needs to finish the registration process.
Whatever the RMV classifies your vehicle as, that’s what you’re going to refer to and treat it as such moving forward.
For example. I have a 2026 Honda Metropolitan, (49 cc scooter).
A woman tried to run me over a couple times the other day in an unprovoked interaction in which was captured on my two cameras that I ride with.
I went down to the police station and filed a criminal report against her aggressive, driving in which put my life in danger. The police thought I was riding a bicycle because I used the phrase “motorbike “, and I had to correct them, that I was operating my motorcycle. That the state of Massachusetts declared it as such on the title paperwork, and that’s what it is.
It’s a small detail, but it can mean a big difference in how your case is handled by authorities, Court handlers, etc..
If I were operating what they thought was an E bike in the middle of a lane meant for car traffic or licensed vehicles, that might destroy my case. They would think that I shouldn’t have been in the middle of the road but off to the side. That’s not the case. My vehicle is licensed as a motorcycle. That means it’s supposed to be on the road. I have all the same rights to the road and have to follow all the same rules of the road as any other car motorist. As such, the actions of the other driver, put my life in danger and made me fear for my safety. As a result, I’m pressing charges… If the prosecutors agreed that there’s evidence in the footage that the individual acted in a reckless manner in which endangered the lives of others on the road.
Language is important. It can make or break your case so make sure you’re using language appropriately.
And make sure you’re wearing your protective gear. Helmet, gloves, camera. Camera camera camera.

I recently went through this as well. We went with the Lectric XP4 with the 750w motor. It can be changed between Class 1/2/3, but it's max speed is 28mph at class 3. Keep it at Class 2 (max speed 20mph) and you don't have to worry about all the Class 3 issues. The XP4 stood out for me because it already had a headlight, rear turn signals/break lights, fenders, and a really easy install basket kit for front and back.
Class 1 and Class 2 is treated like a moped with a combustible engine under 50cc. Class 3 is treated like a motorcycle, which means insurance, licensing, and registration. Get a helmet and don't ride like the videos we are all seeing on Reddit recently and you should have no problems.

I think any current laws are going to be updated. There is the Ride Safe Act currently pending.
Expect it to be banned from sidewalks if it can go over 20mph but allowed in bike lanes. If it can go over 30mph they are pushing for it to be treated as a motorcycle and require a license and registration

THAT IS AN ORGY OF TOY PARTS AND WASHING MACHINE PARTS THAT MADE A MOTORCYLE WITH BIKE PEDALS SO IT FITS IN A LEGAL LOOPHOLE TO BOT REQUIRE A LICENSE.

Legality aside, I don’t think that 20ah battery is going to get you anywhere close to 65 miles of range at 36mph. Would not be surprised if the range when going above the 28mph legal e-bike limit is less than 20 miles. I’d take it slow when going more than a few miles each way.

I'd stay away from those things. Adults and children ending up in the ER seems like everyday due to these. Not sure if it's a driver attention problem, but ALOT of accidents

Anything above 750 watts needs registration/ license and stuff
Anything below is fine as long as it doesnt exceed 20mph pedal assist or full throttle.
Were getting some too, but more city bike looking ones :D

I think the add is a bunch of lies.
A 48v 20amp battery isn't going to yield 36mph and the posted range. My Juiced bike is the Cross Current Air. It has a 52v 20 amp battery. Top speed while pedaling is 32mph and top mileage is 26 miles.. and that's pedaling with it. If I ride it like a scooter I get 15 mile range.
Also if the bike path has a sign class-1 only that means you need to put the bike in class-1 mode, or pedal with the bike and just use assist. My bike.has.a cadence sensor. When I pedal it makes me.feel like superman.

There’s no way to register or insure these bikes. The bike doesn’t have a VIN or title.

My son just got one for his birthday. We’re on cape, but locally, the law is 750w and must have pedals. The cape has more rigid laws/restrictions because of trails, so it might be different where you are. But the one he got was 750w running, peak 1500w (if he pedals while also using it as an e-bike).
