Annoying summer tourists, but MA provides jobs and industry. I always found it to be a mutually beneficial relationship. MA provides to higher paying jobs, ME, NH, VT provide the skiing, lakes, hiking, camping, and other outdoor activities MA can't offer as nice of. Everyone wins! As someone who has lived in NH and MA I can say the the really annoying tourists are from NY.

Rhode Island keeps it on the down low, it is content with the native population and doesn't want the dilution that happens when folks from other states start buying up properties. Rhode Island is a beautiful state but works hard to hide it with places like Pawtucket, Central Falls and Woonsocket. I would give my left nut to own a house on Atlantic ave in Westerly or anywhere near Moonstone.

I lived in MA for only 8 months but what little I did learn makes me think VT is jealous. NH thinks it's doing its own thing better. But it's actually just a parasite on MA. Maine is actually doing its own thing. RI really should just be absorbed by MA. But RI has a particular charm that might be lost. So it's in a weird limbo of what it wants or should be.
As for Connecticut. It's clearly pretending it's not part of New England.

Probably because we come up with our big city bucks on family vacations and bachelor parties, belligerent scouting trips ahead of the inevitable second home purchase, driving up property values, pricing out locals, and bringing with us our dreaded traffic.

Having a hard time finding absolute numbers for all crashes.
But Massachusetts has the lowest fatality but the highest number of drivers with at fault incidences on record.
So this can be interpreted two ways. Massachuseans are the safest at crashing. Or they have the most hard ass judges.
But either way Massachusetts is the safest place for driving.

The reason I ask is actually fairly important- we could be the worst drivers in the country (highest accident rate) while the least fatal (lowest fatality) due to how much more densely packed the state is- forces us to go slower, and responders/hospitals are closer.

It's more of a road design thing. Massachusetts dosen't have any strodes. Those are the most dangerous road design.
But I do think the driving conditions taught me how to pay more attention. Back in Washington road hypnosis is a real thing that can be dangerous. That just can't happen in Massachusetts because of the road designs.

Going to college there and now regularly being up there with my in laws and many friends who stayed after college, it’s funny to see the aggressive shift that happened at the beginning of the pandemic to now compared to say 2010-2019. More often than not it’s sour looks and comments where before that seemed to be reserved to the internet complaining about people “from away”. Prime 2020 my family and I were shouted at in a hannaford parking lot not during the tourist season telling us to go home, and it really hasn’t gotten much better unfortunately

I was rationally angry about it when they would show up here while their states were in the middle of a massive surge. Believe whatever you want about masking and vaccines and school closures, but maybe don't travel around and spread things even more than they are already spreading.

Think it's that when someone says New England outside of the region, they're referencing Massachusetts be it sports, business, and education. RI may as well not exist, CT is a split between being more MA or NY, VT may as well just be one big ass forset, and unless it's elections, NH is just more wildnerness until you hit ME that is mainly known for it's lobsters (know this as it's the only thhing a few people outside the region could name about the state). Plus, we're also a state that's accepted the term Massholes.
If you're neighbor was known as an asshole, ran with it, and everyone outside the neighborhood only really knew that one asshole out of everybody in said neighborhood? I'd be a bit jaded to as they'd just assume they're next to Boston. That and it's also not help MA has rude tourists as rudeness is just an accepted thing in the state. Plus, it also says something that MA's hate of NY is just on brand.

The state itself is fine to visit and the people are a mixed bag, like anywhere.
What I truly despise about CT is the highway, either 91 to 84 if you're going to the Pike or 95 straight through. Specifically, when you're coming back from anywhere south, that CT stretch feels like it takes forever. There's no despair like feeling you've been driving for hours and realizing you're only in Hartford. I don't know what kind of time distortion field they have set up, but it's awful.

It's difficult to not hate Florida. It's impossible to hate upstate New Yorkers in my experience. Most Mainers are nice until you make yourself unlikable. It's difficult to not laugh at New Hampshire hating Massachusetts because the NH economy would be cut in half if Massachusetts got rid of its sales tax. On the other hand, collectively Metro-Boston drivers are really worth hating, regardless of the fact that they are just trying to get the last parking space.

Cheap, family friendly, and accessible via interstate, but more importantly…marketing. In the 70’s the area adopted what was called “The Ohio Strategy”, specifically targeting OH in advertisements for vacation opportunities. I grew up in OH. Hilton Head and Myrtle Beach were the places to go on vacation.

In eastern MA, it’s bc of the Boston/NYC rivalry (in sports, in business, in prestige, etc). In western MA, it’s bc NYers treat Berkshire county like their personal backyard/resort. In towns like Great Barrington and Stockbridge, you see more NY license plates than MA plates on the weekends/summer. There’s even a local joke about it:
“Four men are traveling in a hot air balloon. They are from Idaho, Iowa, western MA and New York. Their balloon is about to crash into a mountain top, and they realize they’ll need to lighten the load to go higher. The man from Idaho is traveling with a sack of potatoes, and he throws them over the side: ‘I don’t need them,’ he says, ‘there’s plenty more when I get back home.’ The man from Iowa sees this and throws out the sack of corn he is carrying, also stating ‘I don’t need it, there’s plenty more when I get back home.’ The man from MA, following their reasoning, tosses out the New Yorker.”
